Default Pilot kits

I have tried many times to find a list of kits released by OK MODEL COMPANY, especially PILOT series. PILOT kits are
considered , even by today’s standards, among the best kits ever produced. This is why they are still so popular.
It must be known that OK MODEL COMPANY is still in business, expanding their kit range, producing mainly
ARF kits. Their home page is www.okmodel.co.jp . Who knows, we may persuade the company to re-release all those wonderful kits from the golden era!

Three catalogues were used for this list:17,19,20.The only catalogue with a printed year 1990 and the numerical codes is #20.
All contributions are welcome to make this list as complete as possible. There is a problem, though, that will make
this task difficult. The kit’s codes are not printed either on the boxes or on the plans! Only catalogues include them!
What I will try to do in the future is to enrich this list with images of each kit.In the meanwhile there are a lot of kits out there that
need a code!

"Who knows, we may persuade the company to re-release all those wonderful kits from the golden era!"

I wish, but it's not likely. ALL of their documentation, tooling, templates, were lost in the factory fire that closed them down. The cost of "doing it again" would be prohibitive.

This may be the best you will find, 40 of them so far:

http://www.outerzone.co.uk/search/re...ilot&Submit=Go

I submitted the Box Fly 20L and the Hurricane, so if you have some plans not there yet, you can
contribute to the cause if you have a way to scan them.

My own contribution to the lists above- and there are probably still more missing.....

- The Box Fly series of ARF/kits. These were "sort of" ARF's where the wings were just about complete but where the rest was like a traditional wood kit. Three sizes as I recall. A .40 with ailerons, a .20 or so without ailerons (although an aileron version may have been available too), and a .10 with no ailerons and no landing gear. The .10 was just about impossible to fly unless you lowered to leading edge of the wing by at least 3/8". Don't ask me how I know.....

- The Super Box Fly series. These were true ARF's. Judging by their colorful covering I'd say the focus was on American modelers. At least two sizes of these ARF's- a .10 and a .40 (or .60?), but I would not rule out the possibility there was yet another size available.

OK, Dave (no play on words); got em. Sure brings many fond memories.

W.E.Fan. OK Model Co put out two series of models, Pilot Built up kits, and EZ Arfs, and here in the USA, in, usually 20 and 40 sizes, a few in 60 size.

The Pilot/EZ line was sold by Hobby Shack way back then, which has now morphed into Hobby People.
They don't sell kits anymore...OK, they list one and it's out of stock.

http://www.hobbypeople.net/index.php...-airplane.html

Such as it is in the kit world these days!

My first radios were from Hobby Shack, the Plain-Jane Cirrus ones. I think they were also the first
to handle the Saito products in the US.

Thank you all for your replies and contribution.
Doug,I will take note about the series you mentioned.
Les,EZ arf and PILOT built up series generally are how you described them. There are certain arf series, however, that are under the PILOT logo.

All the pictures above are from catalogue #17.These are arf kits with built up characteristics and some of them with molded ABS plastic fuselage.
They are all presented as PILOT kits.
I have started a list of kits that I have with no codes, hoping that someone will bring up a catalogue!
Regards,
Socrates

Different names for different markets?????

My experience was USA, and I know they did tailor things based on the target market.\

Thalis (and the rest of you)

I just remembered an old World Engines catalog I had. It is the 1974-1975 catalog. It shows three pretty ladies (all WE employees at the time) on the cover. Pages 28-31 of this catalog shows a number of Pilot "All Plastic" ARF's. Pictures are included too of course. I am personally most impressed by the Cessna Cardinal. 60" span for a .40-.50 engine. Then we have the Super Star, a pattern type machine for a .60. According to the info about this ARF, it supersedes two other ARF's called 5 Star and Cavalier. We also have the Minnow for pylon racing, the Thermul for soaring, the Sky Knight plus the Shell Fly B (advanced .40 trainers), and the more typical trainer types- Olympia, Cherokee, Cardinal and Sky Wagon. So how many Pilot ARF's have there been then? Personally, I have no idea........but apparently there were a number of them, and they were all marketed as Pilot kits and nothing else.

I have to ask you, though, about OLYMPIA.I remember back in the 80's that THUNDER TIGER had an arf with the same name for 0.25 engine. Is there any chance that you are referring to the same kit?
Les,you are right about the marketing about names and regions. For examble,I have a SIMPROP kit named BOX FLY-20S,code 0319449,similar to PILOT DAS BOX FLY-20S.Simprop was the importer
of PILOT kits in Germany for many years. Also "BARNSTORMER" series by RPM,or many HOBBY SHACK kits,ARISTO CRAFT kits etc.Your experience in USA is valuable anyway. What I was trying to say
is that there are PILOT arf kits, both hand crafted and plastic.
By the way,EZ arfs by OK MODEL CO,for the fellow modelers that may not know, were unique and innovative by their appearance, due to the fuel proof covering material they had.Even today,I have not seen anything quite similar by any other company...
Dave, thank you for the web page you mentioned. There are a few kits that must be included in the list.
I have also scanned the preface of catalogue #17,just to give an idea of company's history.
Regards,
Socrates

Socrates,

OK...........will try to fill in the missing blanks. Or rather, I did not know you needed a bit more info, but here goes.....

Ref the World engines 1974-1975 catalog.

The big Cardinal- you got it right.
The small Cardinal (yes, there was a second Cardinal, but it was smaller)- Wing span 47.24" (The 63.78" wing span shown in the catalog is a printing error), .15-.19 engine, 1-3 ch.

The Olympia - 46.06" wing span, .09-.19, 1-3 ch

The Cherokee- 46.48" wing span, .15-.19, 1-3 ch

The Shell Fly B- 51.21" wing span, .30-.40, 3-4 ch

The Skywagon- 52.75" wing span, .30-.40, 4 ch

The Minnow- 49.6" wing span, .40, 4 ch

The Super Star, 62" wing span, .60, 4-5 ch

The Sky Knight, 51" wing span, .30-.40, 4 ch

The Thermul, 80" wing span, 1/2A to .10

The Box Fly- .40" wing span (I think the wing span in reality was a bit bigger), .19-.25, 1-3 ch

The Jr box Fly- 36" wing span (although again I believe the actual wing span was bigger), .09-.15, 1-3 ch

The Box fly 40- 58" wing span, .40. 3-4 ch

Now on to my second World Engines catalog, probably printed in the early 70's . I will only list those ARF's that are "new" to you.

The Cavalier- 63.76" wing span, .60, 4 ch

The STOL- 60" wing span, 1/2A-.10

The Javelin (for C/L)- 30.5 ", .05-.15

The Sabre (probably also C/L)- 35.5", .15-.19

The Proto (definitely C/L)- 35.5", .15-.19

The Five Star- 63.8" wing span, .60, 4-5 ch

I am sure there were many more, but I do not have any catalog info on those. Like the Super Box Fly Series as an example. I know Hobby Shack (now Hobby People) did show them in their ads during the 1980's, so hopefully some of the American viewers can fill in the blanks.

Doug, you are a true treasure map!I am tellling this, because your list has arfs under PILOT's name, something very difficult to be found.Thank you for the time you spent to write this down.
WORLD ENGINES must be a USA company, correct me if I am wrong. Was it an importer before HOBBY SHACK?
By the way,the kit I was asking you about was OLYMPIC-20 by THUNDER TIGER,not OLYMPIA.
I have to apologize also,to our fellow modelers.I was not precise with EZ arfs. They have been manufactured by SPORTS AVIATION CO.,practically the same company that was producing PILOT kits,as Les was explaining about.
I have finished the list of kits I have and not in any catalogue I know.PIPER CHEROKEE U-CONTROL,MICRO STAR and CUTLASS-20 were added after visiting the web page that Dave mentioned above.

Sotiris,

World Engines was a manufacturer/distributor located in Cincinnati, Ohio. I still have (and use) World Engines radios, thus my nick "W.E.Fan". WE also marketed some "foreign" made products (i.e. "foreign" from the perspective of the Yanks). The major "foreign" brands were OS, Super Tigre, IM products and Pilot kits. The owner of World Engines died during the 1980's, the company gradually lost sales and was finally purchased by a hobby shop in Indianapolis (Indy R/C). I don't know how it all ended though.

Hobby Shack took over the sales and distribution of Pilot kits, it must have been during the 1970's. Some 10 years later everything then came to a stop when the Pilot factory burned down.

The Olympic-20 was probably made by Thunder Tiger. I have not been able to find any Pilot kit with that name. Then again, the fact I could not find it does not mean it did not exist. Please keep in mind that with or without the American distributors (WE and/or Hobby Shack), Pilot would still be producing ARF's.

Too bad the Pilot ARF's and kits are gone. I really really liked them. Mind you, MK made some darn good kits too. I once built (with a whole lot of trouble) the MK Blue Angel 20. After finishing it, and without even test flying it, I then sold it. But......I was young and dumb then. These days, I'm old and dumb instead. Biiiig difference

Doug

I've a Das Box Fly in my hanger powered by a Saito .30 and is a delight to fly. It was a gratuity for training assistance to a father and son in law who both got involved in RC. I'd gotten out of the hobby for many years to raise a family and finished the plane only a few years ago. It was upgraded to 2.4 and LiFe battery last winter.
