Jemco Fun Scale Series “Mustang” .40
This is my small tribute to the great Jim Meister and his designs. My Mom bought me a Fun Scale Mustang for X-mas one year when I was a youngster and I finished it all yellow as the Bob Hoover Rockwell International. I always wanted to be a Warbird flyer, and this kit made that easy!
Being the nostalgia freak that I am I bought another old Mustang kit on Ebay and started cutting. The canopy was yellow and flat, so I built a frame around it to get it back into shape and made a mold. My plan to build two planes from scratch using the kit as a pattern. My good friend Rick bought one and the other is for my son. I will build the original kit for myself later. So I am doing my part to keep the vintage stuff in the air!
I will finish my son’s plane this week hopefully, so I’ll update the pictures as soon as I can.

Hi Richard, I have no plans for anything like that. You can find these onEbay pretty often, give that a shot. If you do need a canopy I would be happy to help you with that, those seem to always be damaged or missing.

GREAT JOB! I had one of these from a swap meet and loved it even though it was oil soaked and decrepit. Powered it with an OS 40 FP, which was plenty. It was so light it was a joy to fly. I finally picked up a kit online so I can build a new one. I paid $70. I've seen them go for more and also for a little less, and yes, they show up quite often.
Beautiful work on the canopy. My kit canopy is squished too and I was wondering what I'd do about it. How did you make that nice mold, and how did you pull a new canopy?

Thanks Jim! It is a great flying plane, Rick lets me fly his all the time. Got to love those swap meet finds!
A tutorial on canopy making, not sure about that! Although the process is deceptively simple, there is a learning curve. When I buy my .040 PETG plastic I have to buy it in $40 sheets, my point is it's just not practical to make one or two canopies and if it's your first one you would probably have to make several to get one you like. I have a large stock of plastic already in stock from previous projects I was involved in. There are several threads on here detailing all kinds of techniques. If you are still determined to make a canopy, I'll try and help.

Oops, can't do it. Thanks for the offer of assistance, but I'm thinking if you'd be willing to pull two canopies for me I'd be happy to compensate you for your trouble and your postage.
Edit: Actually that's probably a pretty big ask. I'm inclined to go with more of a racing scheme anyway, and then other canopies will do. But yours really came out extremely well. It's something I'll have to try some day.

<o></o>Wouldn't work for me because I want mine stock, and the stock canopy looks really good. I will make them for $7.50 each for subs of this thread. Keep the old Mustang alive, that is the cause!.

Thank you. I have sent my address to you by PM. I helped a budding RC flier build the Mustang back in 1979 or so. He insisted on a K&B 61 and did not want help maidening the plane. A very short flight resulted with a roll and nose plant onto the asphalt runway at the DCRC field in Rockville, MD.[
] I always wanted to build a Mustang and a F4U of my own. Now I have the time and will have the plans to do so.

Well another successful flying day this morning, did the maiden on my second scratch build, everything went great. I did not have time to add the iron crosses, but I will add them later.
I made 6 canopies, I used one for this latest build and I will need 2 more, but I’ll keep the rest available should anyone happen upon this thread and need one. My canopies are far superior to the stock ones, much thicker and less likely to crack.
Use this thread to post your Fun scale projects! In the pictures you will see a Fun Scale Corsair that I built for my friend more than 13 years ago and it is still going strong! We did some formation flying for kicks, had a great day.

Thanks Chris, Yes, my son wants his plane to be as unique as possible, read no one would want that paint scheme! 
But I have 2 more new old kits and the next one will use the flat olive drab and gray monokote, so it should look really good. One positive thing about an all yellow bottom on that German captured P-51 is that it is very easy to see!

Thanks bro! I am installing a mint 70's O.S. .40 in this one, it has the strap on muffler.
Anything can be done if you want to do the work I guess, but the question is how much work would it be to install retracts in the P-51? It was never intended to have retracts at all, but it could be done by relocating the hardwood landing gear mount behind the main spar (it also is a spar and must be used), this could be easily done by just cutting some new notches. Just use some thin smaller tires and you would not have to cut into the leading edge spar to much (look at my pictures). I can't even remember how the Corsair wing was put together, it's been 13 years!
I can scan the instructions and the wing plan and send the files, you can print them out at your favorite printers and give them to others that my want or need them. There are no plans that show parts on them, were you going to get the templates from someone else?

The great thing about this design is how light it is...that's what gives it such delightful flying qualities. I would not weigh it down with retracts or a heavy engine. Mine weighed less than 4 1/2 pounds and performed well on an OS 40 FP that weighed less than 12 ozs with muffler (similar in power and weight to D's old OS). I used a light foam tail wheel and got the batteries pretty well up front and it balanced fine.
To fly off grass I had the LG bent quite far forward and you never could have retracted it into the wing. If you're flying off a hard surface I suppose you do it, but this is designed to be simple and light and I would keep it that way.

Jim is right, I love doing slow passes with this bird, you can almost walk next to it, and in some wind you can! I've been working on my latest one for 2 days, started on Thursday, and I'm almost finished covering it. All the radio gear is in, engine was mounted, landing gear mounted, when I finish the tail feathers and glue those on she will be ready to put all the gear back in.
It looks very nice in the flat Monokote. The box says the plane can be built and flown in 7 days! I would be flying it on Sunday, but we are going to be having very high winds, with gusts up to 30mph, so the test flight will be next weekend.
