Original wild willy restoration
Hi all I did post originally on the tamiya site, but I found the answers unclear. The transmitter level show very little reading and the receiver pack appears to be corroded. I am confused as to what servo motor to order. Asia is the cheapest source for parts due to freight charges. I tried to post a link, but this site wouldn't let me.

A " Standard " servo will work for both steering and speed control on that car. The definition of a standard servo is one that is a standard size and has about 40oz of torque. When that Jeep was new, the Futaba S-148 was a very common servo. On some Futaba 2 channel transmitters that used dry cells they only used 7 AA batteries and there was a jumper in the battery holder instead of the 8th battery. As a result, the meter read a little low. Perfectly normal.

It works! Well it jumped into action. Who'd think so after 30 years of inactivity. It looks like I will need some new futaba plugs, though what does the white wire do? It didn't look like it was attached to anything other than the far lug? The resistors started smoking up after being plugged in for a few minutes.

The stock speed control is a 3 step deal. For the slowest speed the voltage goes through both resistors before the motor, second speed uses just one resistor and full speed bypasses the resistors and full voltage from the batteries get to the motor. Yes, the resistors get hot so anything that gets on them will burn. The resistors don't last very long but you should be able to find some replacements on EBay. If you intend to run your Wild Willy much I would suggest you install a more modern electronic speed control. The electronic speed control will give you proportional control as opposed to 3 speeds which will result in longer run times.
