Default Atlanta 60

I built a plane in 1986, just before leaving the hobby for 19 years...lol... Now back in the hobby with a vengeance. I believe it is an Atlanta 60, manufactured by Golden Gate Hobbies. (looks similar to Illusion or Curare). I need the recommended c.g. location. As it is a swept wing, I don't think 25% back from l.e. at wing root will work. I can't wait to fly it, has a n.o.s. (unused) Rossi .61 on a Hatori pipe. Thanks in advance.. Big_G

Do a Google search for "mean aerodynamic chord" and you will find many, many references to this topic. Same goes for a search in the R/C Universe Aerodynamic forum.

Hmm, happened to see the GGH ad for the Atlanta in an old MA thast I picked off the shelf today. Very pretty bird. By Ivan Christiansen, I think. I wonder if he is still flying in Canada.

After 18 years, the Bird flies! Damn, the Rossi 61 is powerful...much more than my O.S. 61. It pulled the Atlanta vertical with half throttle...lol... I guessed on the c.g., nose-wheel almost unloaded, but handles like c.g. is close, if not too foward. Pics will follow soon...big_G

Ivan did not design the Atlanta, but he did fly one for a while. Ivan is still active with IMAC models.

Nope, is no way an Atlanta...as Tony F says its a Curare. You can still get the MK wood kit version
via Singapore Hobbies. There were also knock offs sold with fiberglass fuselages.

Every once in a while a Zigsaw Atlanta kit will show up on Eb*y...be prepared to spend a lot. While I personally flew "Avanti's" in the late 80's, both my pattern buds flew Atlanta's for a time. They looked great but there were better choices was the consensus- Aurora, Conquest and later the LA-1 etc.

I e-mailed Singapore Hobbies a few days ago and they said of the Curare, Blue Angel and Aurora (the vintage MK kits) aren't "currently" available. I'm unsure if they're going to get them in the near future, or if that was the last of the stock.

OK, maybe not an Atlanta, but as I bought it new in 1985, I didn't buy a Curare...It had a 'glass fuse, balsa sheeted wings and horiz. stab. It's got to be a variant of sorts, as many pattern planes of the mid-eighty's had anhedral stabs. I wish I saved my R.C.M. and M.A.N. mags....some pics below to aid guesses...lol....any more suggestions, friends?

Specs...63 " span
Glass fuse, sheeted wings and horiz. stab
Double tapered wings with angle cut aileron ends
8.5 lbs...Ouch! thanks again....Big G

I still think its a cuare, the only other possibility is a Tipoare. Let me pull out my kit and look at the nose, as I remember that was the only really visual difference in the 2 birds.

There were several "knock-off's" of the Curare done in the late 70's, early 80's. Maybe you got one of those. There was also a "Super Curare" kitted by Hobby Barn, who also did kits of the Curare and the Magic. But what you have pics of here sure looks like a Curare to me.

Big G

I think you may have FK kit. They made copies of some of the best (MK) pattern ships (fiberglass fuse with sheeted foam wing) and renamed them. I FK copied the Atlas (maybe), Arrow, Magic, Blue Angel, and Curare to name a few. So Atlanta 60 maybe the correct name for your bird. I think FK renamed the Arrow - Carrier and the Magic - Phoenix. FK Kits was carried by Mutchler's Hobbies. Mutchler's also had a nice pictured ad in RCM of the FK line. So if someone has the time and feels go through their old stack of RCM's (say year 78-84) may run across the ad to check the name for you/us. BTW I've been looking for a FK Skyleader for a while now with no luck. So if anyone sould come across one these, please let me know.

If you got it from Mutchler's Hobbies it would be a Career! 64” foam wing span, pre covered with balsa and 56 ½" glass fuse. $139.95 fixed gear and $141.95 with retract gear mounts. I’m looking at it in their February 29, 1992 catalog.

I knew somebody had that info out there. Trying to remember the names of some 20 year old kit without doc.'s isn't easy. Could you check your catalog for the name FK gave the Magic?
