    VK Mach I

I just came across this photo of the VK Mach I. Does anyone have specs/info on it? Thanks.

Amazing! That's awesome. I can't make out the writing on the box, is it 68" and 716 sq." single .23 - .29 engine?

If you ever decide to copy those plans I'd like to know.

    Thanks.

Yes, span 68", Area 716, single channel .23-.29, multi .35-.45 size engine. Kitted around 1961 for only a year or two. I live a long long ways from Kinko's, but at some point in the future...

Krebiel also made a smaller version that I believe was called the Compact with a 62" wingspan for .15-19 engines.

Yep, and was here years before Norm Page's pattern plane of the same name.

It's a sharp looking design, if not a bit novel for it's day. I'd love to build one.

    RE: VK Mach I

My dad purchased a Mach I from an estate years ago. It was equipped with a W.S. Deans 12 channel radio with Bonner servos and a Johnson .35 R/C with the Automix carb. He removed the Deans and installed a then brand new Orbit 4 channel proportional with the PS-1 servos and flew it a few times. The airplane was sold off and the Orbit installed in a Gus Geissinger design called the "Klutz Bug" which was something on the line of the later Kraft Ugly Stik.

Before VK closed up shop, I inquired about plans for the Mach I. Surprisingly, they had a few sets left and several sheets of ribs. I got that and a set of the Compact plans too. Both are stashed away for a later time.

A few years ago, I found one at the Lebanon, PA swap meet. Picked it up cheap too! I asked the guy what it was, he said that he didn't know and that it had been hanging up on the garage wall for a lot of years. It was in pretty bad shape, covered With Monocote and looked like it had never been flown. I started a restoration but have put it on the back burner for a while to get some other projects completed. I have several pictures and will post them here if I can find them.

Do you still have this original VK Compact kit? Is it for sale? Any other VK kits? Mike.

I'm not sure you'll hear from Mike. His last login was 08/31/2006. That is a pretty slick looking plane though.
