Astro-Hog Power
Hi folks, I've asked this question in Kit Building but thought it might get a good response here, too.
Am plan building a tail-dragger version of the Astro-Hog with the old 6 degree wing. Have a new OS .55AX and a new OS .75AX engine sitting in boxes. They both seem a bit "to one side or the other" of the standard .60-.61 engine I'd used before so the question is: Which one would you select to put on the nose of my Astro-Hog? Heavy weight is not a problem on this build. Thanks!
Joe

I owned an original in 76. I had a .40 on it and it had plenty of oooph. I think the 55 is fine and the 75 would be nothing but a vertical monster(unoriginal). 55= more like original.

And I built one not so long ago (Berkeley plan) and it hovers with a T.T. .46. Truly the .55 will be more than adequate. I flew it once with a Veco .61 and it was almost frightening. build it with good wood, it will weigh around 5.5 lb ready to fly and you will enjoy it.

The secretary of our local club flew one with an Irvine 61 in it. He sold it to another chap who put a Thunder Tiger 91 fourstroke into it.
It went vertical!
The current owner loves it but then he is a semi-professional rallye driver!

RE: Astro-Hog Power
Thanks, guys. I'm not looking for vertical out-of-site flying with this one. Got out the .75AX and when placed on the front end it just didn't "look right". Have a friend who flys one with a .46 and it gets around good. Seeing as I built this particular model light, and only want it for a relaxing Sunday flyer, I just may go with the .55AX....
But, then again.....I do wonder what a "Sabre" Hog would look like....

When I've carried out a few minor repairs I plan to fit a K&B 65 which I bought on eBay ages ago. I'll let you know how I get on.

At 18.5 oz, the 55AX is a very typical weight engine for that plane. With the 75 you'd be adding an extra half a pound to the nose, and you'd be into moving back the firewall, cramming in an adequate tank and adding weight to the tail to get it to balance. Seems a shame after building a light frame.
On the other hand, a lightly built Hog with the 55 should be a really nice performer. Not OOS vertical, but really fun and very capable. The original had a Torpedo .35 with a 12x4 prop, just for a little perspective. With a low pitch prop it should claw its way upward pretty well with the 55.

Lol, I remember the ole 40...it might have been my old .35...not sure, but I was running 3 channels. ..and had and old Orbit (which was a great radio) but I bought it used and they shipped it to me with old Green MK servos.. the servos went out one by one and took a plane with each one... Fortunate on this plane it was the elevator that stuck in the full up position. Well I "cut my teeth" so to speak on rudder only, so I just throttled back and kept doing spirals and "s" turns and put er down in an adjacent field (it was bigger) and landed 3 point.... Crossed a few barbed wire fences, and had er back in one piece..

Say gittarpikk, I remember that flying gear...you're telling your age there, my friend . And...I recall going THROUGH a barbed wire fence that I didn't know was strung up on the edge of a field . Only did that trick ONCE!
BTW: I play the gittar, too....well...I beat on the 'ole TELY, that's fer sure....

Good points, buzzard bait. The O.S. metal mount for the .75AX is 3 inches long just by itself; thinking of using that engine on my plan build FlyBaby (RCM plan) that is also on a building table at the moment.
I believe I'm going with the .55AX guys. I've taken pains to build light and want the plane to fly like an 'ole-timer. No 3D here ! (SCEEERS ME!) You've all made some good points and I appreciate the assistance.
Soft landings.

The origional Astro Hog was flown with a K&B 35 Green Head . Granted the pattern was a lot simpler and less accent on vertical maneuvers. The point being overpowering this planes is pointless if you want to enjoy it. Last one I flew had a saito 65 and that spent most of it's time at 1/2 throttle . It was kind of fun doing soda can landings.

OKAAAAAY.....I'll bite...what the heck is a "soda can landing"?
Wonder if that OS.52FS WOULD actually fly the Hog......NAWWWWW...... but perhaps if I......

Put soda can on field[empty one referred]
Take off make procedural turn make a 3 point landing with either main or tail wheel touching the can on landing. No rolling up to it allowed. Repeat till you miss then the next guy gets his chance to beat you. After awhile you will be able to land a hog on a postage stamp. Heavy hogs don't do as well they fall out of the air just as your ready to hit the mark.
after awhile you get bored then you can go and make split S's into landing pattern and save some time on the approach. When you reallg get bored then it is one wheel landing time. Lots of things that you can do with a hog.

RE: Astro-Hog Power
We used to do that with a one square foot piece of brightly colored outdoor carpet staked on all four corners to the ground. I'd be afraid of hitting that metal can with the rotating prop...I just KNOW it would happen and I'd have to put on a new prop sooner or later[]...

hey, gittarpikk, I play a '93 California Fat Tely through a Fender Princeton Chorus. Been playing since '61 and this is my favorite guitar yet. I use a Digitech RP500 digital stompbox and effects unit. YEEHAWWWW!
And BLues are my favorite...
And, lets see...my Astro-Hog is coming along nicely....[8D]

RE: Astro-Hog Power
I have two astro hogs. Both are sig kits. One built from the kit. The other I got at a swap meet. Both are great flyers. One has an 80 Magnum 4 stroke and the other a 65 satio. Lots of power on both planes! The one with the 80 is lighter then the on with the 65 but I fly both on half power or less most of the time I had a 60 2 stroke on one for a while but I had problems with it run inverted because one has a cowl. The 4 stroke has more vertical power but the two stroke had more speed fly’s better with a 4 stroke and sounds better too. Now I am building an 80% hog with electric power 25 size. Sig fuse with a Berkeley .wing. if you want I can let you guys know how the build goes? I shrunk the plans down on a photo copier. That was a mistake because when you tape the pieces together the plans tend to be off a little bit! And that affects your build.

I'm hoping to acquire another Saito 82 for my Hog.
I have one on my 40 size Stick and love it. I also have
an older (80's) K&B 61 but having a hard time breaking
it in. So a reliable Satio is in order.

RE: Astro-Hog Power
As already indicated, the .55AX will fly the Hog with authority, as long as you don't build the "lead sled" version! My Hog had an OS .91 4-stroke and it had the power to hover; if only I had the skill required to hover!

Hey, now!!
I knew my Hog had a few years on her, but I didn't know she qualified as a "vintage aircraft!!"
When I bought it, power was an O.S. .72...nice and calm and plenty of speed for usual maneuvers, but I grew quickly bored of that and installed a .91 FS.
As CanDo indicates, the .91's enough power to do anything the pilot has the skill for: good for Fun Fly maneuvers, "Hey! Watch this!" and "Betcha can't fly in this wind!" situations.
I probably have 4-500 flights on mine, plus a coupla mended cracks in the fuselage from trying stuff I shouldn't have, so the airframe can handle that sort of power just fine.
Enjoy!

I've been flying mine with a K&B .65 for years. It is a perfect combination. I like to use either a 13x6 or 12x8 prop.

RE: Astro-Hog Power
Anyone interested in the build on the 80% hog. I got my electric power at the show in Toledo from Red Hot Deals. I am using a 500watt out runner with a 60 amp speed controller I got for $60 the battery is from value hobby it’s a 11.1 volt 4000 ma lipo. The servos are standard servos I was going to use mini servos but regular where a lot cheaper. In the picture I have a gas prop. But I have exchanged it with an electric prop and got a couple of hundred rpm, and lost 2 oz to bring the final weight to 3lbs 12oz. It has a 57” wing and is 40” long. I used 5deg dihedral where I think I should have given it 8deg. I think I would build it with a cowl next time for looks. Other than that I won’t change a thing. The motor has plenty of power I can lunch the plane vertical. Now just waiting for the field to open up in a couple of weeks! and the real test on how it fly’s, and I will let you know.
