I love the details, the landing lights are nice, what did you use for reflectors? Are they Mini Maglight reflectors? Can't wait to see it with skin. I especially like the scale prop hub

Ya Ken, that prop hub sure is nice eh! No, RCBOATMANIAC, the plane was scratched from the 1/5 scale Pica plans with a lot of help from the Brotherhood. (Khodges really designed the hub - I just copied him!!) The lights and reflectors are some high intensity LED's that were in a light that clips on to a book so you can read in bed! They were very expensive (from the dollar store!) I used the whole front of the lamp and with reflector, lens, LED and spring and slid them into a box. Page 163 post #4065 shows a little of how I did it. They are removable for replacement and the lens that will cover them will just be screwed in place with #0 screws once the covering is finished. I power them with three AAA 950Mah Nimh batteries. No weigh at all. I'm so pleased that with all the radio gear, batteries, motor etc. (just layed on the fuse for weighing) that my baby only came up to 12lb. 13 oz as it sits. Hopefully I can come under 16lbs. finished. The old Zenoah 23 should be just about right for her then!!
Covering will be silver Solartex and then painted yellow and blue - maybe with krylon - we'll see when the time comes. Thanks fellas for the kind comments. It always gives a boost to the ole motivation!

Anthony,
Do you know the diameter of the cowl you need for the 1/4 Waco? If it is 10 1/2" you are in luck. There is a guy in Oregon that makes them for the YKS-6. They should be the same cowl, he also has the wheel pants. I'll look up his address if this is the correct size.

Well I finished the Waco to the point that I wasn't too ashamed to present it at our Flying Club meeting last night. Yah - that's the old me behind it!! I was surprised with the enthusiasm that many members exibited on seeing "their favorite plane". Now have to get into the electrics and radio. Anyone know a simple circuit for a flasher that a novice can build for the strobe effect white lights? I've already blown up a RAM circuit! The colored nav light will be steady on and activated with a switch before take off, but I want to put on the strobes and landing lights by radio. The dummy engine is in there for show until I can get a more "Jacobs looking" one.

Since you are the first to totally frame the YMF from the plans and the Templates, I think that It would be appropriate for a critique on what needs tweaking to make the model come together better. Go ahead and call it like you see it. There are no feelings to be injured, but let's see some fine tuning on the process. Great looking Waco there. I'm sure that the 23 will be just fine with it. Wow!

RE: WACO YMF
Thanks Bill. - OK I will put something together. It will be a compilation of WB #59's experience and mine. He is the other buddy building along with me. He trails a few steps and learns by my mistakes and problem corrections and then adds his own unique solutions. He is basking in the sun in Bermuda at the moment but will be back next week end (20th) and I will consult with him then and write a critique.
RICKSTUBBZ - well I thought I was kind of slow. I'm retired and single (again) and can spend all day, every day, if I wish (and sometimes do) and I did start last Sept. 20th. In the meatime I also finished framing up a 1/5 scale Dragon Rapide which I had been working on for about 18 months. The problems with these plans were incredible and I made the mistake of having them Laser cut. The cutter stuck to the plans and many of the component drawings were inaccurate (eg: main spar out 1/8" to all rib spare cutouts!). By the following pix you can see what a problem that was. The plans had stretched so that the left and right wings and stab were different lengths by as much a 1/2" etc. etc. Thus I quit in frustration. (Excuse the digression and pix off topic - but I had to show it!)
Building the Waco from the Pica plans after that was a breath of spring and re-kindled my building enthisiam. So I eased off the Waco and went back to the Rapide for a couple of weeks so I could present it at the Dec. Club Meeting.. It came together enough to present as per pix.
I'm getting too verbose here. Will get back to you all later with more Waco stuff!!

The cowl is for a UMF not a YMF. The blisters on the Cowl are in pairs not evenly spaced. I have been in contact with Craig at fiberglass specialties and I am trying to work it out to get him to mold a correct cowling. I will keep at it and see if I can come up with a correct cowl.

Jim (SuperCubman), you are the man! That's impressive, doing two builds at the same time of planes that size. I'd probably have things all screwed up, and the WACO wings would be on the Dragon and vice-versa Are you gonna have to cut out that pole in your workshop to get the plane out?
There's a Rapide at CCA in the HARM there. I'll bet Skylark might have some good pics for details. I only took a couple, although this is one of my favorite classic aircraft. This one is of the inside looking forward.

Now that "Dragon Rapide" looks like one heck of a challenging job even with perfectly cut parts and plans that are not distorted. You will be quite proud of this one, no doubt. If you don't post the finished pics somewhere, please email them to me so that I can be in awe of a nice job.
Question, which engines are those?

Is that perhaps the fine old Schweitzer (sp?) plan design of the Rapide at about 8 foot span?
I was the flying half of a team that campaigned the 8 foot twin OS .50 R/C powered DH-89A model from the Schweitzer plans for a number of years in the 1980s and 1990s. In fact, we won the Team event at the George Meyer Memorial contest at the Dallas Northlake field in the late 1980s or early 1990s. Curly's model was done like the full scale C-FAYE (The Lady Faye) that resides at a museum in Canada.
I truely loved flying that model. It was slightly quirky, but thrilling to make fly well. It was a little short on directional stability and would just as soon fly along slightly yawed as not. It made the best wheel landings of any R/C taildragger I have ever seen.
It logged more than 130 flights over a 7 or 8 year period. Was badly damaged in an engine out accident at one of the IMAA events....worst possible senario: had to do a go around and steep climb to miss a model making an emergency landing and lost the inside the turn motor at low airspeed and the model instantly flicked into a spin less than 100 feet high.
Had several engine out landings that were uneventful...as long as the speed is maintained, it was never a problem.
Good luck with your Rapide!

Landing gear update:
I talked with Darrell (Sierra Giant Scale) this morning. He indicated that he has some of the parts out for welding, and that he should ship the prototype to me within a week. Once I have it, I will mount the gear, and report to him. Expect pictures of the gear and the mounting proceedure. I don't know as of yet if the gear will require a floor plate, or what method for mounting the trunions will be required.

RE: WACO YMF
Gentlemen! For some reason I've had trouble getting on to this site since last night! Seems OK now.
Thank you very much for all of the kind words about both the Rapide and the YMF. I will certainly post picts of the final finish in the appropriate threads and advise you here. I have also been contributing to a Dragon Rapide thread elsewhere in RC Universe and occasionally in RC Scale Builder (Bad Word!)
Thomas B. - yes that is the model based on the old Bob Sweitzer plans. Those are the ones supplied by Jerry Bates plans. Thanks for the reminiscences about the Rapide. Always love to hear about successful flights. I've heard too much about unsuccessful ones!
John had advised me that there is a flying DH89a at CCA but unfortunately it is a little out of my reach from St. Catharines Canada! I don't drive long distances any more.
I've been using Solartex for years now and every once in a while I try something else, but usually come back to it. I have even stripped and re-covered some planes. Balsa USA has all the colors and roll sizes you could want. They sell a swatch pack with samples of all the materials. You'll note that the silver cloth has a much finer weave than all other colors. It is beautiful to work with and as in the real thing, the silver undercoat is scale! It is also purported to protect the fabric from decay due to UV rays. None of my models have lasted long enough to acquire sun rot, but it is scale and when the paint chips and the silver shows through, it looks "scale"! The Silver Solartex paints beautifully. I built a Unionville Hobby Otter last summer and the silver solartex only needed a clear top coat to look like the aluminum on the original RCAF version Otter. The white paint was Krylon which went on in two light coats as did the red. Unfortunately the red is the wrong shade - but it's what I had to hand! This plane was a three week wonder and I needed to get it flying by a certain date to commemorate the passing of a friend who left the kit to me. Some viewers thought the silver was film! I'm not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.
Anyway solartex is great. Sig coverall is better but I can't put up with the dope and "stuff" any more and being an old silk and dope man from way back, Solartex is next best IMHO
Ken - the Dragon bends around the pole! Note how the wings come off in two sub assemblies. Sets up in 5 minutes - faster than my Waco!! Cheers and thanks!

That Dragon Rapide looks fantastic! I'm sure it will turn out great.
On a side note, I like your screen name (supercub man). In addition to my Waco UPF-7, I also own part of a Piper Super Cub. In fact, I used to own the whole airplane, but sold half of it to a friend when I bought the Waco. Cubs are GREAT!
Cheers!

Hi Joe - Yes when I first got involved with these threads I needed a name and I was known in the club as a "Cub Lover". I've had three of them and all but my present one have met the ground in an unfriendly way. One from a mid-air and another when a wing came off! This one is a BUSA J-3 that I bashed into a Super Cub and fly it on land or water as the need dictates. Love it and thus the handle! Yes my fingers are crossed for the Dragon to behave itself!
