RE: WACO YMF
Well I talked myself out of going to Toledo, 4.5 hour drive each way + 80-90 bucks in gas and a day lost of building. I think I will stay home and get a good 5 solid days of building in on my Waco. If all goes well I will have it flight ready by June 1st.

John,
A little off topic, but here is a photo that was shot at Toledo (by one of the RCU staff) of the Cessna 195 that Dick Watz built. Your photos were instrumental in getting this one to this point of availability. What a great job.

Sorry, nothing on the Sierra Giant Scale landing gear yet.

Bill,
Thanks for the photo of the 195, glad to help. I was traveling this weekend to transfer another plane so was unable to go to Toledo. It would be neat to see in person, the two tone red looks nice and shinney.

RE: WACO YMF
Adamiani----beautifully done I'm loving the look of your plane !!!
Skylark & Skinny Bob: I've Got Mine !!!!!!meaning my package of drawings arrived today from the Smithsonian-----quite wonderful.
I ordered back about a month ago drawings for the QCF and UBF (2 QCF plates 17168 and 11505 are 3 views of the QCF----1 plate 12424 of the UBF a 3 view) the plates are approx 27X 41 in size and pretty good copies of the original waco drawings. I was very happy to find that the drawing that Skinny Bob had shared with me( and I think I shared with you John)) was ( a reduced version of the UBF plate -12424).
Boy did this provide measurable information of the question I originally posted on when I came on line in this thread.
Though I don't see a scale size on but one of the plates I'm pretty sure all of these are accurate at 1/20th scale.or appx .05" = 1".
Cheers to all

RE: WACO YMF
I finally got to talk to Darrell today. According to him, the gear is finished, and he will be picking it up from the welding shop and getting it out to me this week (if all goes as planned). As soon as I have the gear in my hands, I will post some pictures, and will begin the modifications required to use this gear. Then it will be, "Nads to the wall", to finish the plane. I can't wait to see the gear, and just think how much fun it will be to actually be able to land the plane on pavement.

RE: WACO YMF
Hey Bob ,
is the plan to cut your work into........ kits/OR.. ???? IF so keep me in mind as I'd be interested seeing how your project works out. I'm playing around with a "sport" design of the YMF5 based on a 25 powered size by Al Wheeler that was in Model Builder some years back(I'm enlarging)--defiantely not a "scale"project ---but as I said I want it totally for fun ad sunday flying--or wed. or ...and I'm planning on modifying it to more closely match the UBF-with a ring cowl!
Glad that these drawings/and the one you sent me confirm each other.
Regards

RE: WACO YMF
Clipwing, my plan is to cut parts for me to hopefully build the F-2 for myself. I am not interested in having kits cut to sell. A few people on this forum showed some interest in my plans for the F-2, so I thought I would try and make the plan and some instructions on assembly available to anyone that might want them. It has turned into a challenge for me and I am having a ball doing it.

Anthony;
I call them "Flying Wire Stabilizing Rods" (FWSR), have no idea what the correct term is (yet). The wood ones appear to be about 3/4" in diameter on YMF Classic NC 14081 with the forward wires lashed inside a cutout in the wood (the rear wires are lashed to the bottom out side). On UBF-2 NC 155Y it is a chromed metal rod of about 1/2" in diameter and are lashed on with a black, flat, waxed tape about 1/8" (possibly smaller). I plan on being at the airport Sunday and will get measurements, more pictures and the correct terminology. If you compare the wires (1/2" wide) to the rod you can approximate the size.
P1 Middle wire on YMF Classic NC 14081
P2 Front wire on YMF Classic NC 14081
P2 FWSR - chromed metal on UBF-2 NC 155Y
Joe (WacoJoe) may be able to measure the wood ones on his Full Size UPF-7 and get an answer faster.

I checked the mailbox last evening, and nothing yet. I'm seriously having withdrawals from being away from the build for so long, but I see that changing soon. The yard work is about caught up, and I'm ready to go. Top Gun is only 3 weeks away, and I'll be tied up with that for the full week. Mike Barbee is supposed to have his little Waco there too. The big one will naturally be there. I'll get pictures.

Your term is technically correct, but we call them "javelins". There is no specific size or spec for them. They can be made from wood or metal (as you've described). some people go to the trouble of making very fancy ones, and others just tie a dowl or broom handle (literally) in the wires to keep them in place and steady.
Next time I'm at the hangar I'll measure mine and see what they are, but as I said there isn't any "stock" or "official" dimension on these.
Cheers!
Joe

Well, another week has come and gone, and still no gear. Looks like it may be time for plan B (as in build your own). I don't think that it will be too difficult to build a shock absorbing landing gear, but I've been wrong about things such as this before. I'll be absent again from the 23rd to the 27th for Top Gun. Y'all come on down, ya heah?

Bill, is he (guy at Sierra) shining you on, or what? It must be that, or he's just given your project such a low priority as no matter. How long has it been, now, that you've been trying to get that gear. Like you said, it can't be that difficult to build, they've already done it for the larger scale. I sure wish I had the tools for such a venture, I can think of a ton of specialized pieces for a lot of different planes that it would be cool to market.
Wish I could get to T.G., love to see all that fine detail.
