Is there a thread or a site that will give me actual measurements or diagrams of the metal panels on the YMF or am I on my own to obtain them. My Pica plan doesnt show any of them except I believe the door panel.

Which panels are you referencing? There are actually quite a few. If you will contact John Howard, he will fix you up with a couple of CD's that show probably every square inch of the Waco. You can take another part that is visible, and compute the size of the panel from that. As to correct dimensions of the panels, the full scale Waco used whatever was needed for the application. I honestly don't think that any two were identical.

Money well spent.

If you need any other assistance with things like this, remember, I have a set of the factory prints, and they even show what nuts and bolts are used in the construction. They show different panels, but again it depends on the application. there are round panels in the bottom of all the wings at the turnbuckle locations to be able to tune the wings. Most people never include them. Mike Barbee did on his, and you can see them in some of the photos that were taken at Top Gun 07. Just what you needed. More detail to add.

Detail is the plan. I dont really know what my frame of mind will be in then, but right now I wanna go all the way with it, including all the inspection covers. I just went up to GBR this past weekend, which is where I got my private pilot licence and they've got a brand new Waco YMF in the hangar. I took 156 photos of it until the battery on my digital camera died. I think I had a perma grin the whole time I was there. Im going to try and get a ride in it this summer, who knows maybe even take the controls if I'm really lucky. Thanks again.

Bill, Your description of making FG panels was very timely, and I tried it yesterday. I did have a few issues though. There was a build up of resin in some areas. I think the resin may have started to gel, as it was left over resin from another layup. What thickness of glass are you using and do you wax or prep the glass in some way? I see the potential-it looks to be a great tip.

I use a razor blade and scrape the glass clean, then clean it with ammonia based glass cleaner. I use a couple of pieces of mirror that are made from plate glass, which is 1/4" thich. If you have a problem with the resin sticking to the glass, I would surmise that you have some residue on the glass. Clean it with a razor blade, then clean the glass with cleaner. You could add a coat of automotive paste wax afterward if you wish.

Hello,
I am working on the AMA plans. Can I substitute 1/8 ply for the 5/32 balsa if I add lightening holes? What is the density of 5/32 balsa vs the light ply and how is strength effected?

Regards,
Bruce

Where do you want to substitute the 1/8th ply for the 5/32 Balsa? In most applications, you can use 1/8 Balsa without strength penalty. If you are talking about some of the Formers, then use the 1/8th ply from the firewall to aft of the wing saddle, and you can use 1/8th balsa for the remainder, with the exception of F-14B. That former needs to be from at least 3/16 aircraft ply, since you will be using it for the tailwheel mount (if you are going for the scale location). 1/4 ply is better there.

I made my form and buck to start making the corrugated sheets that will be cut into the aileron surfaces. I liked the idea of using music wire to push the aluminum into the form. It shows real promise. Now if I could just come up with a way to get Janelle to make these sheets for me, I'd be in business.

Bill,

I'm interested in more information about your method for making corrugated sheets. I looked back through several thread pages, but couldn't find any other references. "Form & buck" confused me as well as your description about wire. I assume that you are making them out of aluminum.

I got some sheets from a friend when I did my AMR, but I only have one sheet left and the friend is dead. So, I'm on my own, as usual. The sheets were vacuum formed from 0.009" thick styrene with 1/16" ridges. They really worked quite well.

For those interested in attempting to make corrugated aluminum ailerons, see the Rosenstock HKS Waco thread on RC Scale Builder page 33.

My mistake. The pictures are in the Waco YKS thread, on page 2, post 41. Don Olson posted pictures of the form, and buck. He used a hammer to pound his corrugations, but I'm using my drill press to press them in. Both ways work.

RCP,

It is on another site RC Scale Builder, not RCU. The link to the thread is http://www.rcscalebuilder.com/forum/...59&PN=1&TPN=33 . RCSB is another site that has a lot of info for Scale scratch/plans built planes, kit planes and building techniques, mostly bigger stuff, in different sections and almost no sport, theory, pattern or other stuff. It is much more restrictive on discussions than here on RCU.

The Rosenstock HKS Waco build is a good one to see what can be done on a cabin Waco with upholstered interior and many other details. It is worth a look.

Just asking..... Can any one tell me where I can get a pair of wheel pants for a 1:6 Th. scale Pica WACO YMF 3. they have to be already formed, I hate sanding.

Also........The trim (decals) on the cowling blisters started to wear out, effected by nitro. Having hard time to find suitable one that can stand the wear and tear. Unless I'll have them painted (unfortunately I'm not an artist to make perfect ones) and fuel proofed.
Any suggestions that i can work with ?.
Thanks.

Garthwood,

Go to AeroFiberTech Products (Stan’s) http://www.aerofibertech.com/index.html and look in the Pica section, part number P-913P, Waco, 1/6th scale, Wheel Pants. They also have a matching cowl but I believe it is the UMF cowl.

Fiberglass Specialties http://www.fiberglassspecialtiesinc.com/ is another source for wheel pants part #27, WACO, 1/6 scale wheel pants.

In both cases, you may want to take a section out of the middle along the seam to make them a little narrower, otherwise they look a little fat.

Both sites also have the 1/5th scale cowls and pants, Stan’s has both version of the 1/5th Cowl, the UMF with paired blisters/bumps and the YMF with equally spaces blisters, make sure you specify which when you talk with him.

FGS also lists a series of dummy engine front halves that may be useful for cowled installations, both 9 and 7 cylinder versions. They do state that they are not very detailed.

Garthwood,

I just cut teardrops from Ultracoat and put on my cowl. Takes a little time . Then sealed with clear fingernail polish. You can look on page 225, post 5602 and 5603 to see how mine came out..

Tony V..........................Nice work. I have something similar that came with the kit, I should have sealed them . The bottom ones kind of peeled. I can try your method and seal them. Thanks for the tip.

Skylark 1.......checked out those links, great stuff in there. Might order the wheel pants from Fiberglass Specialists.

Thank you both.

Garthwood,

Stan's are about a buck cheaper as listed. Bill has used his 1/5th pants and cowls. Let us know how the FGS quality is, ie: pin holes etc.

If Stans are of a better quality I'll buy from Stan. You guys from what I can understand had used Stans. I'll go with your recommendations. I'm only ordering a pair of wheel pants. The cowl that I have is still OK.

Garthwood.
