Greybeard & mrdhud,
Thanks for your comments but it is not really hard to do. I could run you through as to what I used & how to do it or if you still think it is beyond you then if you send me a profile of the size & shape of the 1/5 screen then I will have a go at them for you but they may not conform perfectly to the fuse. Payment,no, not worth trying to put a price on them, if they are any good & you can use them then good luck.
Regards tmac
tmac

That would be great if you would share your method on how you did your frame. That is one of the things I would like to improve on mine. If your willing to be the teacher I’ll be your student.
that does look fantastic, I think we all would like to see how you go about making them.

Ok then let's have a go at trying to put to pen as to what I used & how I did it. The alloy is plain old ordinary alloy from the local hardware store, trace the out line of your screen frame onto the alloy(.5 mm thick) leaving about 10 mm extra width at bottom & sides to allow for the forming to the fuse. The outside cuts are the easiest ,just a deep scour with a stanley knife then a couple of bends on the edge of your table & presto,a good clean break. The centre cut outs are a lot harder, you just keep pasing the knife over the cut untill you get all the way through. ( I went through about 1/2 doz blades) The big piece of formed metal was used to do the forming on. Start with centre section then the sides. I clamped the sides between two pieces of timber then small bends at a time. You should be able to find something about the same diameter as your fuse that is hard enough (eg gas cylinder small & empty) to keep working on the shape untill you are happy with it. I used all the tools you see in the photos, small round bar, small ball peen hammer and a piece of soft timber.
All the best, any questions just ask & remember there is no such thing as a dumb question.
Regards tmac.

To all.

Just one observation to an excellent set of instructions.
To make the cut outs for the wind shield, use about a 1/8" drill bit for the corners. This will give you a nice radius to make it look more profesional

Thought I'd post an uodate on my Waco ARE. Here are a few pix. #1 Shows the fuse with stringers yet to be added on the top rear of the fuse. Also tops of the flaps will be sheeted with 1/64 ply - ailerons are fabric covered.
Pix #2 shows a front view with one of the "Grimes" style retractable landing lights in place and the F/G cowl just sitting there! Gear is made and needs to be sheeted

Pix #3 shows the scale tail wheel in place and Pix # 4 shows the detail. Made mainly of brake line tubing with steel plate for the wheel fork. SSoldered a 3/16" wheel collar for the shaft. Got the shock from the R/C auto section. It is a Duratrax DTXC - 9008 for the Losi-Mini T. I dug up stronger springs from the local hardware store. Had to mount two of them to get enough resistance. Think it will work fine. Steering wires and springs will come back from the rudder to the tail wheel horn as per the full size. Fun and games !!

A spring from an R/C car? I HATE those cars, but THAT is a stroke of genius! And finally a real good use for them...tearing them to pieces and using the parts to make our planes better.

Excuse me, I need to go now and put on my flame-proof suit....

LOL

Hi Bill - Thanks but it is just a work in progress with lots to do. A little tired of building at the moment so just thought I'd share my efforts to date, in the hope it would get me going again. Dario's plans are quite wonderful, but they are "builders plans" and require the use of quite a bit of brain matter to sort them out. Everything is there, you just have to find it. Also, I've deviated from the plans somewhat in order to model the NY Daily News version of the Waco ARE and I've created my own problems to some extent. However everything is solvable. Just takes time and patience! I've got the time and I'm going flying in this fine weather- to find the other!

Bill, DO IT NOW > Do you or any of the rest of the brotherhood have any photos of the screens of full size, particularly the metal framed ones not the fiber glass ones on the latter day variants?

It'll have to wait until I can get Janelle to shoot some photos of mine. It's fairly time intensive, and there are a lot of little bitty pieces involved.

tmac48,

These are what I have at the moment of the 1987 WCA YMF NC 14081. JFYI, the front wind screen on this plane is completely different, is removable for solo flying and folds up for storage.

P1 - Overhead shot of the rear cockpit wind screen
P2 - Side shot of the wind screen and Pilot/Owner Robin William and Passenger Debbie in the front seat.
P3 - Front wind screen on NC14081

Thank you for the photos, that is exactly what I was looking for. Will have a go at the rear one first and post a photo of the result.
The front screen should be a piece of cake when I find some piano hinge the right size
Regards tmac
Will post a photo of the spats & covers in their final place.

Yes Bill you are correct, but I'am a sort of scale builder,I like to have my models look scale and at the same time look pleasing to me all the while keeping in mind my limited ability at doing certain parts of the build. I always start out with great intentions but when the going gets too tough or frustrating I tend to compromise a fair bit. Having said all that I just like the look of the metal screen frames and that is what I would like to duplicate if I can do so in an acceptable manner. Hope you can make sense as to what I mean.
Regards tmac
PS still looking forward to your build info on your screens.

OK gents,
I've started my rebuild of the 1/6 scale I picked up at Perry & I'm going to need decals. Anyone know of a source where I can pick up a sheet for this project? Any/all help is appreciated.

Contact #116 Avaiojet (Charles). He can make you a set in any N number, color or style you want. It may take him a bit as I understand he just moved to Florida and may not be set up yet
