The Pepino YMF 1/4 scale is 90" with a weight range of 22 -25 lbs. The Barth YMF 1/4 Scale is 88" with a weight range of 20 -25 lbs. I have the Model Builders plans (11811) of the CTO and believe the e bay plans to be the same and would say with a careful selection of wood and assembly the weight in this case is a non-issue.
Choose an appropriate engine as the plans show a Quadra or a Kawasaki 3.5
The other issue is obtaining the fiberglass cowl (12†diameter x 9-1/2†deep) and wheel pants of the appropriate shape and size (11-3/4†long x 5+†high). Stan’s site is down (they are under new ownership and relocating) and Fiberglass Specialties http://www.fiberglassspecialtiesinc.com/catalog.htm does not seem to list the correct sizes.

The 27% YMF is going to have a 97.4 inch top wing. The plane is designed around the Zenoah GT 80 twin. This engine will fit inside the Cowl with a little room to spare. I'm thinking that somewhere around 32-33 pounds for the all up weight.

Check out the Don Smith Cessna T-50 build thread http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10129431/tm.htm there is an interesting tutorial on building lights including the Grimes retractable Landing Light. The Wingtip Lights are not the same as most Waco lights but some of the construction methods (lenses) can be used. The Grimes LL was not used on most Wacos; I have seen it on the EQC, UBF, SRE (2 LL), YKC, YKS, ZQC and a few others.
There is also a section on building the tail wheel yoke and steering shaft out of solid ¼†aluminum rod, you need to read the whole section. It does not cover building the rest of the tail wheel assembly.
Since the Don Smith T50 is in 1/5th scale, the above parts can be fabricated as presented for the 1/5th Wacos.

Bill,
Not quite, had some ice and sleet yesterday and a couple of inches of snow overnight. Work was closed yetserday and today, travel was and is bad, visibility less than 1/4 mile at times. I have the truck warming up to get the ice off. It is currently 19° with overnight temps expected to drop to 0° with a chill factor of about -10°.

I will briefly relate my R/C Waco story: in 1978 I saw a Platt Waco flying with one of the original OS 60 (open rocker) 4-strokes. It was the most realistic flying and sounding R/C model I had ever seen and it left a lasting impression. I have always wanted a kit but seemed to just miss out on *bay and swaps - at least until last Friday. I now am the proud owner of a pristine Pica 1/6 scale kit. I'm not sure when I will build it but I now know where to come with questions.

Be sure to read the modifications in the Revised Short Manual on the House of Moy site http://www.houseofmoy.com/waco/ as they can be applied to the 1/6th as well as the 1/5th scale Wacos. The engine mount mod will give you more flexability in choosing an engine and moving the tail wheel forward will help with the scale appearance. And dual aileron servos will enhance controlability over the single servo with belcranks. Just be sure to use the appropriate size wood for the mods: example - 1/4" for the 1/5th may be too thick so use 3/16" instead. Light flys better than heavy so substitute lighter wood if need be. The 1/6th does not have the latitude to go all out on extra detail that the bigger Waco planes do but you can do a creditable job if you are careful.

skylark mark is right on about the alirons i found a crashed waco next to a trash can in 1989 and was told that model sucks i was wasting my time so i took it home the controls wher all slopy i put two servos in the wings and pul pul on the ruder and elivator then checked the wing incidence and corected it the model had ben built strait but the controls were lose after that it flew grate one of our better pilots at the field said he had flown the waco and could not belive how well i was flying it i then met the original owner and let him fly it every body loved that plane so i would say for sure use two alirons

Isn't it amazing how many mouths drop open when you bring a previously judged POS back to the field, rebuilt, and proceed to fly it like you stole it. Been There, Done That. You always hear how there was a problem with the radio, or engine, never that the setup was ham handed in execution.

Can you tell me what it takes or what is required to join the Waco Brotherhood? I just received my kit today, it is a 1/5 scale Pica Waco YMF3 kit, it was made (the kit) right before they stopped making the kit.

Good morning Brotherhood.
I would like to toss my hat in the ring for the Brotherhood. I have completed my 1/5 Waco and had a successful maiden. Even with the crosswind that crept up at our field. I must admit I am addicted now and looking forward to building another one. A little about my Waco, it is a 1/5 Pica I picked it up from a friend who was selling it for a friend who passed away. I paid $50 for the partially built kit. The fuse was framed but was badly done. The rest was still in the box. I cut out the offending parts on the fuse and rebuilt it using this forum as a guide. For power I installed a Saito 100 swinging a 16X4 APC. It flies very scale. I found so much useful information here I have been telling everyone who is interested in my plane, to check the forum. I have a lot of scale features on my Waco as I intend to use it for scalemaster qualifiers in my area. The test flight was pleasantly uneventful, it just simply does what you tell it with no complaints or bad habits. It is a dream to fly. Anyway I would love to be part of the Brotherhood since I am now addicted, and will be building another one with more scale features.
