Robert,

The stab angle of incidence is +2°, the Pica plans call for 0° incidence for both the upper and lower wings. The rudder has no offset on the model.

skylarkmk1, Not building for show, just like to add scale detail. The photo was just one I like, but seeing how Itisso easily seen as not to that era,Iwill go with another one i like.
Thank's for the rudder incidence. I know what the plan's call for i have them. Just don't seem right for wings to not have any incidence. That's why I asked. Do you know the scalewing's incidence, if any.

Thank's

Robert,

I believe the wing incidence is 0°-0° for the wings, the stab is adjustable from +3° to -4°.

Don't go overboard on the detail, you want to keep the plane light although it will fly at about 20-21 lbs. just ask Bill.

Here are the colour charts for the original YMF and about the first 47 of the new YMFs by Waco Classic Aircraft. Note NC 14081 does not have the Insignia Blue accent colour applied

Robert,

VH-YOW is a 1997 YMF Super made by Waco Classic Aircraft and is based in Australia (Country Code - VH). You can tell this is a YMF Super by the angled air balance on the rudder. The fuselage is also 6" longer and 4" wider than the original Wacos. This enlarging of the fuselage was made because the people of today are larger than the people of the 1930's when the Waco was designed. The fuselage was lengthened after WCA serial number F5-009. The main gear was shortened by 3" and the tail wheel was raised 5" to improve ground handling and vision.

Robert,

It too is a YMF Super by WCA, s# FS 033, formerly N 90B (USA) based in England. Use whatever colour scheme you like, most people won't know.

You will find many of the photos posted on Airliners are from overseas and are the more modern aircraft.

The drip pan is to catch the oil that drips from most radial engines. Sometimes the owner connects a tube from the engine to a jug or can on the ground to catch the drip.

As the oil also collects in the lower cylinders, you will see the pilot turning the prop by hand for a few revolutions to re-distribute the oil throughout the engine and prevent hydraulic lock.

P2- Pan under Waco UBF NC 2091K
P3- Tube, can and pan under Waco SRE NC 58785

Its is an interesting subject, the Waco YMF and its resurrection in 1986. There have been more YMFs built since then then there were built in the 1930s (18 UMFs and 18 YMFs).

The whole Waco story and the different models they made. I am fortunate to live in the St louis area where the American Waco Club has their annual Fly In every year in June at Creve Coeur Airport. CCA is also home to the Historic Aircraft Restoration Museum (HARM) which has about 70 aircraft in the collection (most of which fly) including about 10 different Wacos.

Hey Mogman,
How about some pictures and an update on your 40% AMR Waco.
Is that Moki 400 ready for an overhaul yet?

Ok guys, here is what's happening. I keep forgetting to take pictures. The wings are built, need final shaping and sanding, fin and rudder built, final sanding req'd., stabs and elevators built, deciding how to hinge them today.

I found quite a bit of the kit/instructions vague and not enough information. But, thanks to John's DVD it all starts to make sense(I think!) For example, I am now looking to see what the actual shape of the elevator tip at the hinge plate is.

If AMR had included a few more drawings...a lot of the drawings make reference to the 33%, but the supplied parts for the 40% are different. I now have a bald(er) patch on my head from scratching it, trying to decipher some things. As this plane is not being built for "scale" competition, it will be what it is....built to fly and enjoy it.

I made up a jig/tool to make the corregated aluminum sheeting for the aileron...actually looks pretty good if I do say so myself. Took about 10 mins. to produce a sheet. Bonded to the aileron with contact cement.

Question...I would like to use ail. servos on the bottom wing only and drive the top ail. with the ail link rod. Given the size of the ailerons...28 x 6 ins, does that sound feasable?

Moki 400 is back in it's box for now, no more running....can't wait...that sound!!!!!!

I will see if I can figure out how to post pictures, I'm generally hopelessly lost with computers. I can't even remember how to get from the camera to the computer.....because I do very little of that sort of thing, plus the memory is not what is once was!!

Cheers, for now,
Dave.

Hi Dave,
You have made good progress on your Waco. The L/E of the elevators should be round at the hinge line. I used Robart hinges on my 33% and they worked out just fine. Not sure if they are strong enough for the 40% but I would think so.

You could/can drive the aileron's from the bottom wing only but you will need one whopper of a servo to power two of those massive aileron's. I took the easy way out and put one on each of my aileron's on my 33%. I did only use one on each side on my 25% Waco and the slave rod is activating the top aileron. I have not flown that config yet.

If you run into any issues just drop Dany at AMR an e-mail, he was always very helpful with my build.
Later!!

Hitec M7990TH and the M7980TH coreless titanium gear servos put out 500 OZ/IN of torque at 6.V. That should be enough to pull an aircraft carrier.

I have talked to Dany a couple of times, once to get some missing parts and again to enquire about some picture CD's and building DVD's, other than the wing construction DVD, that were mentioned in the building manual....."refer to DVD and picture CD". These apparantly do not exist! They have always been very quick to reply to e-mails, even on a Sunday!

I use Du-Bro heavy duty flat hinges and use a piece of .047 music wire full length. Used the same set up on my 1/2 scale S/Walker...no loose hinges after 7 years.

So far it's been a great kit, good parts fit andnice wood.

Cheers,
Dave.

To everyone who wants new Brotherhood T-shirts. I must have orders for 75 or more shirts IN HAND before I can place the order. I know it's a PIA but you need to snailmail a request to me. When I get enough orders I'll then ask for another snailmail with payment. I suspect they'll be $15 each plus postage.
Snailmail your requests to Mitch Epstein

At this time I've got requests from Bob Faetsch, Bob Kjellberg,Dave Willaimson and Andy Sulkowski. WE NEED 75 TO MAKE A PRINT RUN. Mitch

Let me step in here. We (Mitch and I) will discuss what color we will have for the 3rd Generation of shirts. The first run was Tan, second was Maroon. The problem is with the art. It would be pretty easy to come up with a color of shirt that would hide the art. We don't want to do that.

Mitch, put me down for a couple of Larges too.

As the oil also collects in the lower cylinders, you will see the pilot turning the prop by hand for a few revolutions to re-distribute the oil throughout the engine and prevent hydraulic lock.
John and all,

The pilot is not attempting to "re-distribute" the oil when turning the prop by hand before starting the radial engine. There is no way to "re-distribute" oil that has collected in the lower cylinders of the engine. Turning the prop is done just to make sure that the amount of oil that's collected in the engine is not enough to cause a "hydraulic lock", which is when there is so much oil in the cylinder that the combustion chamber is completely full. Since oil is not compressible "hydraulic lock" will cause mechanical damage to the engine, usually in the form of a bent link rod. This damage will result in catastrophic engine failure at some point in the future. Not a good thing.

So, when the pilot pulls the engine through he/she will instantly know if there is hydraulic lock when the engine stops against a "hard" stop, that being the oil that is not compressible in the cylinder. You cannot "fix" hydraulic lock by turning the prop. You can only detect it. The only remedy for hydraulic lock is to pull the lower spark plugs and drain the oil out.

Cheers!

Joe

Hey nineonine, could the image be placed on here in a downloadable format. That way we could have itdone ourselves, on whatever shirt, jacket, etc we want.
Maybehave a polo and a light jacket embroidered
That would also maybe alleviate a lot of work for you.
Just a thought!
