RE: WACO YMF
John, that is fantastic info, the photo does show it really well. I am pretty sure that I can do a fairly good rendition of the rib stitching and cover tapes now. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction, much appreciated.

Welcome Boys!!!
As far as Balsawoodinc.com goes the jury is still out. I placed an order last Wed and I do not see any updates to my order status and I sent an e-mail last night and no reply so far? I have most of the fuse formers for my plane cut out of stock I had on hand but now I am in a holding pattern.
Later!!

RE: WACO YMF
IMHO Bill Effinger's plans are stand way back and look for the semblence of a scale outline. Building techniques and methods used were out dated.

I agree. Effinger's plans are schoolyard scale. I have only experienced one plan that was published by Miller, and that was the Cessna 140. It was okay, but just.

Welcome brother's.
Last night I walked in the house and said to my wife "Honey, I'm on the last thing, I'll be doneand then I can cover and paint". She commenced to laughing and said " I'm sorry, but you must say that twice a week".
So from this day forward I will never- ever say I'm done, in any form. I do believe that also hold's some truth as a scale builder, we're never done anyway.
Gotta love this hobby!

I forget who said it, but it was one of the major scale builders who said something to the effect - A scale model is never done, there comes a time when we just have to decide to quit working on it.
RE: WACO YMF
I received confirmation my order from Balsawoodinc.com shipped today. I should have the wood by the weekend. I will let you guys know how the quality of the wood looks once it is here.

Hi Guys,
I have been trying to come up with a way to make some scale looking flying wires. The ones from Germany look really nice but they sure are proud of them and I am too cheap. After building 2 Waco's and swearing I wouldn't build another plane with flying wires here I go again. For both Waco's I used 2-56 and 4-40 rods for the wires, they look OK but just not real scale.
I think I may have a method for making functional wires and look closer to scale. I am going to try and take aluminum tubing and slide it over the rod and run it thru a set of roller dies(yet to be made) and compress the aluminum down onto the wire and into an airfoil shape. The ends will need to be trimmed and blended to the rod with JB Weld or something similar. You can then attach the wires to the plane with clevis ends. A solder on end at one end and an threaded end on the other. This may a be a bit heavy for the 1/5 Waco but would work on a 25% and up for sure. I will make a set of my Gee Bee when the time comes and if it works as planned I will make new wires for both my Waco's.
I will try to do a test in the near future.

Anthony, I wanted the same thing.
After a little research I found something called stitching wire. I just got some sample's in today. I think It will work great.
The sizes in the photo's are .103 wide and .017 thru .028 thick. Need more info let me know.

That doesn't look like it will suit my needs. I am working in a larger scale. I hope to post something soon as to what I will be doing. I just received my wood order. Time to crack the box open and take a look.

RE: WACO YMF
Hi Guys,
I just opened the box from Balsawoodinc.com and I have to say no complaints here. All the wood is cleanly cut. All the wood appears to be what I would consider medium to soft. The sheets are not bowed and the edges appear to be straight. The wood seems to be consistant in grain and does not seem to go from soft to hard. Even the 20 1/8x1/4x48" stringers appear to all be consistant in size and they were all nice and straight when un-bundled. All in all it appears to be a good value compared to other sources that I have priced and bought from in the past.
Looks like I will be firing up the band saw and disc sander tomorrow

RE: WACO YMF
Hello all,
Quick ? for you Waco experts. I'm building the kangke 1/5 Waco and have decided to go with aileron slave rod on two servos. I already had the 1/8 toggle bolts (great idea by the way) but, do you think a 2/56 rod inside a CF tube would suffice or should I use 4/40 instead? Also, what type of screws/bolts did you all use to attach the toggle bolts to the ailerons? I will play with the placement of them on the ailerons until I get the required amount of throw before I drill them and make it permanent. I just didnt know how you all attached them to the ailerons. Thanks in advance.

Tmac that loosk really good, what did you use for the gas caps?
Strangevil29,
I used 4-40 rods inside of CF tubes on my 25% Waco, arrow shafts actually. I installed a ply plate inside of my ailerons and used #2 wood screws to attach the toggles. Not knowing how your aileron's are constructed I don't know what to tell you. If there is some structure there already you could drill a 1/4" hole and epoxy pieces of wooden dowel into the ailerons to have something to attach to. You will have to use your own judgement there.
