Paul,

Welcome to the Brotherhood, I too am building the GP WACO. If one of your other biplanes is the Super Stearman you will see a number of improved similarities. I try to post updates on the other thread and get great ideas for personalizing my GP WACO from this thread.

I did an FAA N number search for mine and changed the registration to an American aircraft with N4949. My first choice was going to be N49WC after I saw some of the other WACO registrations but that registration belonged to a Super King Air 300. N4949W belongs to Southwest Airlines but N4949 is a retired number that used to belong to a 1928 Travel Air. That at least is an aircraft from the Golden Age of Aviation.

http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinqu...Numbertxt=4949

I grew up in San Francisco, if you are wondering on the significance of using 49 in the registration.

Yes , I have the SS also. I am just finishing up the PT-17. I'm installing a DLE 20 for power it will be my first gas build. Lots to learn over running nitro, kind of like learning all over again. I'll probably need all kinds of help, Thanks for the info I'll check out the other thread on the SS.

Dan, I have used it, I honestly can't see a difference. It's alot softer, mostly white balsa. In my opinion I use 6-7 lbs. Ive never ordered from the other place you mentioned, so I won't comment about price. Lonestar has some salvaged balsa left I've used alot of that. great wood, sizes are off a little. Salvaged from the fire in 2007. George

Errol, In reply to your email the wheel spats have a ply doubler(supplied in the kit) glued to the inside to give the screws that hold the cuff in place something to bite into. Regarding the side and top panels this all depends on what model you are trying to represent. The kit that Peter has produced would represent a early model ymf 5 which does not have the side panels that I have on my WACO (REPLICATING A LATE MODEL CLASIC YMF5). If you want to go the side panel rout then apply the panels starting at the rear overlapping as you go. The top (turtle deck) is then overlapped on the side panels. Please keep in mind that I am not a expert on Waco's and my Knowledge on them is limited to what research I have done and the help received her on this site from fellow Brothers. Will upload some photos for you .

Hi guys,
A little off topic here. My wife and I are animal lovers and we have lost 4 dogs in the last 3 years to old age and cancer the latest one was our last Cocker Spaniel who was 14. After searching for a good breeder for a long while I have purchased a new companion. He is an Alaskan Malamute puppy. His name is Takoda and we get to bring him home next Thursday. I will have to travel 200+ miles to pick him up. I put the deposit on him about a month before he was born and I got the pick of the litter.
Just had to show him off
Anthony

Hi tmac

The screws that I am referring to are the ones that go through the oval part into the wheel spats. Are they just screwed into the fibreglass, or did you make doublers inside the spats for them.

Regarding the wheel strut covers, are they glued to the wood parts attached to the piano wire or are they just held in place by the screws at the rear of the covers.

I hope I am making sense..

Peter (FMBB), your input would be welcome as well.

Regards to all

Errol, You and I are talking about the same thing. I call that part that you refer to as a cuff and it is screwed to the wheel spat with screws that go through the fibre of the spat and into the ply that is glued inside the spat. The ply is provided in the kit and the directions as to how to use it is in the directions, however some things get a little lost in the translation from German to English. Regarding the landing strut covers I have just screwed it in place, but you can use silicon and glue it on if you like. I would not recommend a permanent glue for you may want to remove them one day for repairs etc. I will upload a photo of the ply doubler that Peter supplies in the kit and one with it glued inside of the spat.
Regards tmac

Hi tmac

I did not receive those ply doublers for the cuff. No problem, I will make them. Silicone makes sense. Didn't think of that. I suppose that's why we have these forums.

I see you have a blue thumbnail. What happened, did you hit it with a hammer?

Thanks a lot for your help.

NO not a hammer,I was working on my mates lathe when his wife entered the work shop and I have her convinced that it was her fault that I was perving on her bosoms and not concentrating on what I was doing, It could have been worse, I was lucky I did not loose a finger or the whole hand. Lost the nail but the new one has yet to grow back properly.

Thanks Bill, fine looking dog you have there.
I had a malamute when I was growing up many years ago. He was a great dog and I have always wanted another one. He is going to get the royal treatment for sure. He already has two harnesses 3 collars, 2 leashes and more toys than you can shake a stick at and he isn't even here yet.
Later!!

John,(skylarkmk1), I'm trying to determine the wording on the top c/section fuel tank logo on one of the photos you posted. To my old eyes it says.....

(can't make it out) fuel or cap(acity) 20 gals..?
80 octane min..?

Cheers,
Dave.

Dave,

You did not state what post the photo was in, but I will take guess it was a silver center section with 2 red knobby fuel caps with rearward facing copper ? fuel vents with brass fittings. The words state;

Fuel 20 Gal

80 Oct Min

This shot may be a better view. It is on a 1932 Waco UBF NC 12002 and is similar to the way it was done in the Pica/Paul Matt subject Waco U/YMF NC 14031 although NC 14031 had the fuel caps at the outboard ends of the tanks with the vents in the middle and an auxilary tank in the starboard outer wing panel only (no port outboard tank - 3 tanks total)

Gentleman, can anyone help me get the Dxf files on the house of moy web site. I can down load the files but I can't open the files. I wanted to use them as a reference to the AMA templates. Are they more accurate, or are they hand drawn. It dosen't matter either way, just for reference. I'm starting to make my templates for cutting. I want to make out of something that will be more durable than paper templates. I also don't want to destroy the paper ones from the AMA, Thanks guys George Need to know what program of file they were created in?

Goerge,

You would have to ask ChrisM what program was used. I have tried Auto CAD, Turbo CAD, Generic CAD and a few others without luck. Why not just photo copy the AMA templates and use the copies to cut your parts. You can check the accuracy of the copies by stacking the copy on the original and holding it up to a window or bright light. You will still have the originals for reference. The AMA templates work, ask Dan.

George,
You will need to download something like this to be able to view and print the dxf files from the site, It is free and was easy to use.

The template sheets all have a scale on them. Check the scale measurements and you can quickly tell if they are good to go. When I did the drawings, I applied these scales. They are hand traced from a virgin kit. Note, that does not mean that the kit was ugly.

You can have a Husky/Malamute. They are completely hypo-allergenic. They have zero dander.

Dan,Im going to try toopen the Dxf files also. I have the ama templates. going to make my pattern's from them, they need cleaned up a bit. I have the jpg files but my printer is in shop for repair now so I cant copy anything. If this all fails I will greatly appreciate a copy of all the files or templates. Are you building the 1/5 scale pica WACO-YMF also. I know you are building one, but I don't know what scale it is. If you are building a 1/5 scale from the AMA plans an extra copy of the templates you are using would be great. I have to wait on my 5/32 wood anyway, so I'm getting everything else in order. I read through the short manual last evening, now have to decide whatplane to model after. My wife likes the blue and white one posted a few day ago. I can't remember who posted it. Thanks George
