your wings look super, i only hope mine come out half as good. what did you use for a base coat i plain to shoot a thin coat of auto primer and then a light wet block sand. keep up the good work, can't wait to see the final product.

Nothing special about the base coat, automotive 2k primer. dry sanded 220 then 400 then scotch brite a lot of sanding time but I fond it rather difficult to fill all the weave in the sig Coverall, I reckon I would have applied at least six coats of dope, some mixed with talcum powder and still ended up with a few pin holes after the base coat (primer). Will post a photo after spraying the top coat.

Been at the drafting table today. I wanted to do the ribs by the composite method, and so they shall be. Tuning wires inside the wing and all. It's gonna be a beast to build, but it will be scale.

Bill, sounds like an interesting build, please keep us up to date with your progress and don't forget we all like to see plenty of photos.

I was going to leave the alloy panels in the natural finish but decided to paint instead, a photo in the primed state.

Thanks for the reply Chris, I seen the posts (571) and I did go to the Centryjet site and boy that landing gear is expensive. I think I'll pass on that, I can buy Two WACOS for that price ($615) buckaroos, WOW.

Hi tmac and everyone else

One of my buddies at the flying club had some louvers that he bought in the U.K. years ago. He gave me some which were perfect. I have made up a panel with them for my Waco.

Thanks anyway for all the help and advice you guys gave.

The detail work on these kit built WACO's is amazing!

I've gotten a little further with my Great Planes ARF version. I've had fun using some small screw sets from the E-flite Blade series of helicopters to add some detail and to aid in mounting the fiberglass lower wing fairings. They were rather misshapped and I had to work hard to get them to conform to the fuselage sides. I added covering to the ends of the lower wing saddle and painted the slot where the landing gear mounts. I've used the Robart control horns on the upper ailerons and plan to use them on the top wing and tail.

Next comes the final motor installation and pushrods for the tail. I'm going to make the top wing panels removable from the center section with a slight variation of what I have seen done. I've cut a second servo extension slot on the right side of the fuselage to run the cable up the cabane strut and another hole in the bottom of the center section.

I'd like to make the hand holds in the trailing edge of the center section but I'm not sure if it's solid balsa at that point or hollow.

Hope to break in the motor this weekend and fly the following if weather allows.

Cowl Trim Painting?

Sorry for butting in here but this thread clearly has a good mix of builders so I thought I'd ask a question. I searched the thread for the answer but after some time didn't find the info I needed.

What are most of you doing for trim on the cowl bumps? Freehand masking and paint, stencils and paint, vinyl graphics, etc? I have (2) projects going and I'm looking for a process that is repeatable. I can freehand one time but reproducing it 14 times is a problem! Any help would be appreciated! If I missed the info in my search perhaps you could redirect me.

Oh yes, the projects are an old Pica Waco and a Ikon NW D145 Moncoupe. I like to say that I'm "scratch building" them from the kits as it seems like there is more redesign than original kit! The paint used is automotive basecoat / clearcoat.

Thanks for any help!

FMBB

Peter,

Errol Levin and I have been back and forth about the aileron counter weights in your 1/4 scale YMF kit. Are they necessary, we understand they are for flutter control. We are of the thought process that if a strong enough servo is used or a 4 servo system they would not be necessary. If they are installed I realize one end attaches to the aileron, does the other end just free float in the wing?? The kit design is yours so were asking for your views. Please advise.

I understand your view about 4 servos not being a necessaity and your stand on building light due to the weight limits in Germany.

While I'm here, I have asked before I still would like to purchase a second cowl for emergencies, do you have any means of selling replacement parts for repairs/maintainence or are we ( those who have purchased kits) out of luck and have to buy another kit to do so. I know you provide missing parts as necessary.

ceije, Peter will supply any part that you wish to order, he has all the parts listed on his web site. You can quote the relevant part no and he will follow up very quickly. I have obtained extra pieces from him for my WACO in the past and found Peter to be most helpful and prompt.
Regards tmac. PS I did not install the counter weights but did install 4 servos.

I masked my 1/4 and 1/3 scale cowl bumps and painted then trimmed the paint with 1/16" 3M automotive pinstriping tape. This may look too large for a 1/6 or 1/5 scale cowl.

Hi Tmac,
I went down and snapped a few shots. It is a bit dark in the room I have the plane stored in.

I sprayed the cowl white then masked the white areas and sprayed the Insignia Blue. The edges were trimmed with gold 1/16" pinstripe tape.

Hi tmac

As requested here are some pics of my Waco.

Basically I am ready to cover the fuselage, so I am busy making all the panels as well and providing sturdy places to screw them all in place. Most of the electrics is done in a modular fashion and color coded so they can just be plugged together. All the servo trays, fuel tank tray etc. are all removable individually as well. The wings are ready for final sanding, all the struts are made, so basically I have dozens of pieces, but from hereon it just assembling and then painting.

Regards

Errol, real neat work, good shots of your building skills, post more photos when you can. Real envious of your dash panel,I think I can recognize it as the one supplied from Voglesang is this correct?

regards tmac.( PS what motor are you going to use?)

Hi tmac48

Yes the dash is from Vogelsang. Pricy but very nice. I could never make it so well. I am using a Saito 5 cylinder radial with a custom Kelio collector ring exhaust. Should have sufficient power. Unfortunately it is a glow engine. The Moki engine would not fit in the cowl.

Very nice! I'm not sure I have the patience or talent to duplicate that sort of thing 14 times on a cowl. I guess I'll have to give it a try though. Has anyone tried vinyl stencils. These would at least provide a consistent pattern (paint mask) for the basic decoration shape. Then pinstripe tape could be used for the outline followed by a clear coat for protection / appearance.

The probelm with a mask is the blister is full of compound curves. A real nighmare to apply a stencil. I tried[&o] I wound up just maskig each one individually.
