tmac,
Your Waco is looking great.

The cowl blisters are a PITA to deal with. I have never tried decals but I have tried vinyl mask on them and it is hard to get them to conform. I like to paint all my markings when I can. You may find it hard to match up paint to your stripes on the fuse.

Not sure what kind of decals you have but you could try applying heat from a hair dryer while you work the decal down around the blister. The compound curve makes this very hard to do.

Later!!
Anthony

HI Nut, thanks for your comments and advise re the decals on the blisters, I have tried all the methods that you have suggested with varying degrees of success . I think I will talk to professional painter/sign-writer and see what he suggests .

It has been a while since my last post,a lot to do with not enough time to do it all. Have been applying some more detail but having a devil of a time trying to get the decal to conform to the rocker bumbs on the cowl, may have to resort to painting. Any ideas from anyone who have been there and done that.

Hi tmac,

You could try a decal softening solution. I think the plastic kit guys use this for compound curves. You can find articles on the web about it.

Some product links:

Try YouTube for some tutorials.

Hope this helps.

Hi tmac,

nice built do you take any orders for painting Wacos? I have one close to be ready for painting, may be the shipping might be a bit too expensive to down under. One question are you confident that the flying wire suspension points at the lower root rib will cope with the loads? The load introduction will not be along with the longitudinal axis of the parts if they are not strong enough they at least may bent. The forward attachment is ok as the load will be along the axis. This point is important if you loose the wires you will loose the ship if you are not very very lucky. In one of the previous versions we used only one screw to fasten a fairing which accepted both flying wires. As sh... happens, the screw was a bad screw[&o] (air inside the material one could see that on the threaded part which still was installed) head came off and all two flying wires were lost. This resulted in an unrestorable crash. This was the reason why we changed the system to two screws now to prevent such a problem in case you get that bad screw out of hundred.

Anthony,

You can always enter the Pro-Am class at Top Gun. Not too much detailing required there. Only thing needed is a photo of the full scale plane to show it did exist. No static judging either. It's a great stepping stone to scale competition.

Hellow FMBB, I thought for a moment that you were going to say that you had a 40% WACO kit ready for me. I do appreciate your concern about the flying wire anchor points, but I can assure you that they will be fine. 4 mil stainless eye screws 40 mil long screwed and glued, the arnt going no place.
PLEASE DO A 40% ER

jymster, thanks for that info, very interesting, apparently white vinegar can be used as substitute for the decal softener solution.

Hi Tmac,

just in the course of developing another bipe close to a Pits but no Pits the original was built in the 30s and was famous for its capabilities doing aerobatics, so another scale project but not a 40% Waco. A 40% Waco would require a lot of effort to keep it below the 25 Kg limit we have here in Europe. Above the 25 you will need a special permission to fly your model and the airfield has to be certified too, so it will be not so easy to fly it during fly meets on other airfields again you have to ask for a permission (that's the old world problem too many guys you have to ask for permissions but that's due to the high density of residential areas I guess).

For masking the blisters, there is a stuff called "liquid masking tape". Paint it on (several coats), cut the pattern with an X-acto, and peel off what you want colored. Google it, and you will come up with a bunch of choices.

I’m finally getting the aluminum landing gear installed and sheeted with balsa. I have to figure out how to mount the 1/8†music wire to the gear any ideas would be appreciated.

WacoDream,
You progress is looking good I know what you mean about getting inspired with these big Waco’s. See you at Top Gun.

Tmac,
Your detail work is fantastic I especially like your wind screen.

Hi All,

I'm in the process of building a Dave Platt (not Pica) 1/6-scale (60") YMF-3. I'm at the tail feathers and I'm looking for the horizontal stab incidence setting. Neither the plans nor the instruction manual mention it. I measured the angle between the fuselage crutch and the horizontal stab using a digital incidence meter and got +.6-degrees.

Thank you in advance.

Give Kirby Graphics a call. @ 513-332-2422. He did the markings for my 1/5 scale Waco. He specializes in only model grap[hics and uses a very thin vinyl for his stuff. You can look at my model and see how my cowl came out. I'm very pleased.

EJ,
The 1/5 scale is +2 Degrees according to the Pica manual. I would think +6 would be way more than needed.

Bill,
If I can can keep from re-kitting my Waco this summer I just may ask for an invite next year to Top Gun in the Pro-Am class. I am sure it is a good time.

tmac,
Best of luck with the blisters. Make sure you let us know how you handle them.

Joe,
I will have to look up Kirby Grahics, I see it is a 513 area code, that is Cincinnati which is local to me. Definetly have to keep that in mind fo rfuture builds.
Later!!

Thanks Jim,

Right now the horizontal stab platform is at +0.6 (6/10) of one degree. Even though the plan or instruction manual doesn't spell-out the required incidence, I measured the plan and there is in fact some positive incidence.

I must admit that the vinyl is a little thicker than a water slide decal. The nice thing about the vinyl is you still apply it using a liquid to apply it which allows you to lift it if it's not exactly in the right place. You can also soften it with a little heat (actually, just warm it slightly ) and it goes around the blisters very nicely. You only need 14 sets of the darts for the blisters, and Dennis gives you about twenty just in case you mess up one or two figuring out how to apply them. I only needed one extra..... Good luck with what ever you go with.Joe

Thank you Bill. Do you know if that goes for the 1/6-scale as well? From what I can tell, the 1/5-scale is an enlargement of the 1/6-scale (which I'm building). Like I posted, stab, or wing for that matter, is not depicted nor discussed anywhere on the plan sheets or the instruction manual. Built to spec, the stab platform comes out to +0.6-degrees.

Any feedback from those that have built the 1/6-scale, either the Dave Platt or the Pica version?

Thanks.
EJ, that seems to be pretty much universal regardless of scale size.
