Dash. I have been in touch with Kirby Graphics and have decided to get a complete new set of decals from him and start over. I will still have a go at the cowl blisters with my present decals with softener when it arrives just to see if i can
get it to work. Thank you for the link.

Just speaking for myself, I have not seen a stencil that can be used more than once. The problem is this: if it sticks well enough to prevent bleed under of the paint, it will be distorted when removing it. The paint masks done by several graphics firms are really good, but again, you can only use them once. The WACO I just finished painting used the masks on the N numbers on the wing and the scollops on the rudder. They were done by Kirby Graphics. He made a made a mask for each application. See my notes on the previous post.If you will be painting over a hard surface, such as fiberglass, or a glassed, sheeted wing, you might consider Frisket Film. This is a very thin, low tack vinyl film. Usiong a fine line marker, you would first draw your marking on it, , and then apply it to your surface. THEN you very carefully cut out the part to be painted with a new # 11 blade. It only take a very light touch to cut the film, but I would never try it over an open area such as a fabric covered structure such as on the Waco. I have used this technique on several of my models with excellent results. It helps if you have some drafting experience. Joe

" you might consider Frisket Film."

Friskit does NOT like compound curves.

If you're thinking about the blisters on the cowl. I definitely agree! :-) Minor compound curves are not much trouble.

I have another question for the Forum please.

On my Platt 1/6-scale (apparently on the 1/5-scale as well) there are balsa sheet insets mounted in-between the main landing gear wires. Since the landing gear flexes, I will not be glueing the top of the inserts to the fuselage. I've mulling-over leaving a small gap (1/16"?) between the top of the insert and the fuselage. I'm wondering how some of you handled this area. I've looked for pics here, but with 650 pages, Its hit-n-miss.

Thanks in advance.

EJ, On the first WACO i built I found out after the first hard landing that it is not a good idea tp attach the landing gear to the fuselage. The one under construction now will have fairings at the top of the gear but they will not attach to the fuse. If you check the index, there are some posts listed that show how to add a spring to the gear to soften landings.

When you say not the attach the landing gear to the fuselage, you're refering to the balsa inserts between the gear wires, right? That's what I figured, one pranged-on landing and I can see where the joint is toast.

I did see some of the 1/5-scale planes with the added wire and spring gear modification. Think this is needed for the 1/6-scale as well?

I cut the inserts and left a 1/16" gap between the top of the inserts and the fuselage.

Thanks!

Dash, they look really great, if I could get mine to that standard I would be moor than happy. I have sent them off an
email, the only thing that bothers me is that the decals I have are very good quality and very thin. anyway I am willing to try anything at this time.
Regards, tmac
( PS. have a bottle of decal softener on the way to try also. )
I must admit that the vinyl is a little thicker than a water slide decal. The nice thing about the vinyl is you still apply it using a liquid to apply it which allows you to lift it if it's not exactly in the right place. You can also soften it with a little heat (actually, just warm it slightly ) and it goes around the blisters very nicely. You only need 14 sets of the darts for the blisters, and Dennis gives you about twenty just in case you mess up one or two figuring out how to apply them. I only needed one extra..... Good luck with what ever you go with.Joe

Dash the softener made no difference what so ever, the decal just will not conform to the compound shape. Have ordered another set of decals from Kirby. I must stress that this is not a rant against the Decals that I have it is just that I do not seem to get them to work for me, I am sure that other guys have used them with great success.
Regards tmac.

TMAC,

What yhou have on the model already looks great!  I don't think I would change a thing there.

If the decals you were trying to put on the blisters are the sticky back type, they are probably mylar. Regular water slide can be difficult to conform to the curves if the clear part is too thick. If it's real thin they tend to come apart.  The vinyl I got from Kirby are very thin vinyl and went on pretty well without any "help", but I did find ( as Dennis recommends) that a little heat from your heat gun softened them enough to allow them to conform to the blisters.

Dash, the reason I have ordered the complete set is incase the colour match is significant, otherwise I will just do the blisters.

EJ.
In my opinion, you need something the control the gear so they do not spread out. I found that using just the bent wire on the legs, they would spread under any rough landings. Unfortunately my flying skills do not lend them selves to "greased in landings" on every flight.
Hopefully you are more skilled in your flying/landing skills.

Just landed LAX returning from Top Gun.  All I can say is WOW.  So many beautiful planes and such inspiration.  I took lots of pictures and will upload them this week to share.  Can't wait to enter next year.  Got some work to do!

Hello all,
Been kind of quite the past few days so I thought I’d let you in on what I have done. Well, to make a long story short I have ordered the ¼ scale Barth Waco from Team Aeroscale. I’m thinking about the saito FG 57T twin gas engine although it’s a bit pricey
But you just have to love the sound of a four stroke.
I really like NC 14080 it’s a YMF 3 so some changes may be in order.
Bill, I’m sure we will be talking a lot on the phone and I can see some trips to Leesburg I’ll need all the help you and the brotherhood can muster up to get threw this build LOL.

Hi Dan,

you are welcome with any question you have, please sent me a PM or ask via this forum. Have you also considered to buy a Laser 360 which is a perfect fit for the 1/4 Waco, also a four stroke but needs methanol.

Peter,
Thanks the Laser 360 looks like a fine engine but I really prefer gas.

Dan,

I prefer gas engines as well most of my engines are running on gas, no sticky residue on the model after the flight easy to clean and a bit less expensive.

The Saito 57gas twin has worked well for others. You also consider the Roto 80cc twin. It is 2 of the 4 stroke singles. I think they are actually 36cc a piece, but it always looks better when you round up!

Saito is comming out with a 80cc 3 cylinder gas.... Converted 3 cul.
