The roto engine sounds sweet but to large I have to get some thing that will fit inside a 9.5 cowl. Please any other suggestion welcome.

Dan,
I prefer gas engines as well most of my engines are running on gas, no sticky residue on the model after the flight easy to clean and a bit less expensive.

Me too. I just have two glow planes left. With glow fuel at maybe $24 per gallon vs gasoline at $4.00 +- per gallon, why put up with glow?. Gas engines don't quit, plane is cleaner, etc. If my vision is correct, I see glow going away. Replaced by electric on smaller to mid size and gasoline on bigger sizes. Am I right?
Thanks,

Dan,
I like that color scheme. The contrast should make it stand out. My plane is similar in colors as you know and it really shows up well in the air.
Peter,
I purchased an engine from Fiberglass Specialties and it is lacking in molded in detail. I am in the process of adding a few items to it and painting. I will post a couple pics later this weekend when it is finished.
Later!!

Mike,
I do not agree in total, Laser do not quit as well and i have a special source where I could get glow from. I guy near by sold me the gallon for 2 bucks. I used it for years now without any problems. So the price for methanol is not such an reason for me to change to gas engines. For me it's more the size which made me to use gas engines. Above the 360 gas engines are more reliable as glows. We developed a gear for a Laser 360 which allowed to use a large prop reducing noise and supporting scale appearance but too expensive if you have to buy both (engine and gear) compared to a bigger gas engine turning a similar seized prop.. But in general you are right glow engines have disadvantages compared to gas engines and due to the models are getting larger and larger gas engines due to their larger volumes are getting used more and more.
Anthony,
locking fwd. to see your dummy engine.

Peter,
The engine really lacks molded in detail. I guess there is only so much you can do with fiberglass. Anyhow I added a few items to it to dress it up a little. I am going to add a oil cooler then it will be ready to install.
I will buy some 1/4 scale Williams Brothers cylinders this winter and build a more detailed engine to install. This one I am building will get me by for this summer. It will at least look better then the twin orange cylinders on the 3W engine.

Peter,
Here are a couple pics of the engine mounted. Didn't turn out too bad for what I started with. The whole engine cost approx. $40. This is a nice quick cheap option to get a dummy engine.

Hi Anthony,
nice work looks great in the cowling and hides away the two cylinder completely. Do you have any heat problems with the engine?

RE: WACO YMF
Hi Peter,
I have a baffle that blocks off the top half of the cowling. I did not have any heating issues. The cutouts in the dummy should give ample flow to the cylinders. I have not run the engine yet with the dummy in place. I will take some temp readings with a laser gun when I do run the engine to make sure I will not have an issue.

Anthony.
Williams Brothers does not make cylinders for a Jacobs or Continental engines, they do make very nice cylinders for a 9 cyl. R 985 which is what I used for mine with some minor modifications.

Yeah I know but they will make a better looking engine than what I have. I wish someone would make a proper 1/3 scale Jacobs dummy radial.

Hello all,
The Barth kit has arrived and I have it unpacked. All the parts are neatly marked and together with rubber bands. Doesn't look like a lot of wood but I’m sure that will change when I start building. There are a lot of glass parts and the cowl has vary nice detail work also the aileron are already built and has the detailed skin already attached. So far every thing looks good I have a few things to finish on the 1/5 scale Waco then I’ll start the build.

Hi Dan,
Don't know if you have decided on an engine yet. The DLE-60 twin may be a good option. It is 8.5" wide not including the spark plugs and caps. The 3W twin I have in my 1/3 is a tight fit as well. The spark plugs and caps line up with the cowl blisters and gives me enough clearance. I have approx. 1/4" clearance inside the blisters. Here is a link to the engine at tower with the dimensions. [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCPZB&P=0]DLE-60 Twin[/link]
Maybe you can find someone here on RCU that has that engine and they can get you the dimension for plug cap to plug cap.
Enjoy the build.

RE: WACO YMF
Oh another thing, with a twin in these round cowls you may find a need to modify the muffler canisters to fit within the cowl. I had to cut and modify the canisters on my plane as well.
The twins do seem to run smoother and have a better sound so the extra work to get them installed is worth it.

Dan,
Are you building the quarter scale or the third scale? I'm building his third scale, but won't be working on it again until this fall when we get back to Fort Myers.

Anthony,
I’m thinking about the saito 57cc twin engine but I like the price of the DLE 60 twin much better I still have plenty of time to make my mind up.
Chuck,
I went with the ¼ scale model I can transport it in my van with no problems (I hope LOL)

I took the Waco to the field today for engine run up and taxi test. All went well. With any luck next weekend the Waco will fly. I gave my J-3 a good workout.
Here are a few pics I took at the field today.

OK guys, I'm having a small problem with my posts here on RCU.
This line was written below the first comment as a new paragraph. It seems like everything I do gets posted as a continuous sentence.
This line is also spaced below the first two.
So is this.
Any comments or suggestions?

The javelins are made from 3/8" dowel rod. I drilled thru the dowel rod for each flying wire.
