WACO YMF
RE: WACO YMF
WacoDream, I used the Barth ply screen frame as a template and had a fabrication shop with a cnc router copy the shape onto .9 alloy. Then I made a another outer piece that molds to the shape of the fuselage and the bottom of the main frame,(as per a photo that a member once supplied on this site) of the full scale, the rivets are small alloy rivets peened over after a small washer is inserted after the perspex. The hardest part of the job is getting the bottom part of the frame molded to the shape of the fuselage, but as you can see it is doable and in the end looks fairly close to the full scale screen. To be truthful If I was to do it again I would pick a subject that had a fiberglass frame and make a mold and do a fiberglass one.

tmac,
Very nice work on the Waco, I need to make a front windscreen for my Waco. Where did you purchase the piano hinges? and what width? that looks really good.
Later!!

RE: WACO YMF
G'day Nut, The piano hinge for the front screen was purchased from, www.hobbytools.com.au ( HOBBY TOOLS AUSTRALIA ) 13 mil wide (open ) x 120 long. I am still not convinced that they will be what I end up going with. I have been in contact with John at Nelson hobby and will be getting some hinges from him, 5/8 (16 mil) and 3/4 (19) mil. It is very hard to go by the look of the material that you are thinking of using because when you actually fabricate the part it just looks wrong. I like to use the size of the full scale as a starting point but if that does not give the effect that I want then I will opt for a different size on the model until I get the look that I am after. Not the true scale purist way of doing things but I do not build to suit scale judges just my own critical self.

RE: WACO YMF
OK now I am starting to feel a bit happier about the front screen. the frame looks ok but I think the 2mil screws need to be downsized to 1-1.5 mil have some on order so will see how they look.

RE: WACO YMF
Great work on the fuel lines. mine is a UMF and so the routing is a bit different. The challenge for you guys is to make an actual working fuel line, one side to fill the tank, the other to work as a vent. I had that idea too late after I had closed and covered the wings.

RE: WACO YMF
miniet, the fuel lines and the front screen are both works in progress. The fuel line is an outer piece of nyrod that I tried to paint but the paint peels off as soon as I tried to bend it, have some soft alloy tubing on the way so will be having a another shot at it. The front screen seems to be getting closer as to what I what, needs smaller screws and rear brackets and then we will see how it all comes out.

RE: WACO YMF
tmac,
Thanks for the tips. I may actually have some 1/2" hinge to mock up and see how it looks. I will have to dig thru my supplies.
Your Waco is looking great.

RE: WACO YMF
Angel would you possibly have a URL link to the fish tank fittings / parts you are speaking about for the Waco fuel system? Also I did receive feedback from a Top Gun contestant that on his 33% the 1/8" fittings were larger than scale. FYI etc.
Aircraft Spruce makes 1/8" aluminum fittings and here are some links

I am sorry to haveto tell you that I do not have a specific URL link. The fittings I used are from regular fish tank supplies and did reguire a little trimming, since it was only for show I did not have to worry about fuel leakage.

I am starting the Fuselage panels for the Waco. Does anyone know if there are templates for this that can be downloaded? Any ideas much appreciated. Thank you!
RE: WACO YMF
Everyone,
I just finished up with the American Waco Club Fly In at Creve Coeur Airport (near St Louis). The Waco airplane attendance was down, only about 15 Waco’s flew in but with the ones based at CCA there were over 25 Waco’s on the field. The people attendance was good, some where near 100. Good times with old friends and new friends. Some of the first time Waco’s at the Fly in are shown below. Next weekend is the National Waco Club Fly In at Troy Ohio. Unfortunately I am not able to be there.
P1 – NC 17473, a 1937 YKS-7
P2 – N 14770, a 1191 Classic Aircraft Corp., YMF-5C painted similar to some Cuban export UMFs. Recently restored
P3 – NC 1023S, a 1929 ATO, Recently restored
P4 – NX 275TW, a 2012 NUWACO T10 (Replica Taperwing) being pushed to a hanger to get out of the coming rain.
P5 – NS 14137, a 1934 YKC, Recently restored

John. Thank you for the beautifull pictures of those wacos, they look like they just came out of the show room floor.
As for the cuban painted one, "similar" is about the best choice of words to describe it as it is all wrong.
John. Are the stripes on the rudder black or blue? I can't tell. Should be blue.

Waco dream.
I had an idea for a leak free installation you may want to try, Push 1/8" fuel line tubing inside a 3/16" aluminum tubing before bending the tube, cut in half any elbows,T's, and B nuts you need to use. Once the installatin is in place, bond the pieces together. Once every thing is painted, no one will notice any thing. ( not even our old judge )
There are some pictures of my waco in the early pages. the completed model is some where around pg, 500.

I think I have worked it out. I do not know what has changed, this site or my computer but the up-loading of photos has completely changed from how I was doing it one day ago. A couple more photos of the front screen with the brackets to the fuselage. Will post new photos when I receive my larger hinge material.

Angel,
The stripes are a very Dark Blue, the turtle back is black. You and I know its not quite right but the majority of the public will never know the difference. It still looks good.
TMAC
I know you have the picture thing solved but I just hit reply, add my message ant then use the "Click here to upload images and files!" button. It goes to the Browse screen, I find the pictures I want to upload, hit the upload button, and wait for the message that they loaded successfully. I'll do a couple at a time and repeat (using the upload more files button) until I have all the pictures loaded (up to twelve)

skylarkmk1, I hit reply, post message and then hit click here to upload images and files. This then used to take me to upload image that then took me to my browser but not any more . I now have to click on a file that that appears at the left top of screen alongside rc Forums- rc Univers that duplicates that same wording and then it takes me to a screen that I can upload one photo at a time from, but it takes me to my files in a different format that I have never encountered before and it will not let me resize the pics if the are the original size which is always too large. very odd.

Tmac - the windscreens look amazing. You are building one fine Waco. It's an inspiration for me to see your good work. Thank you for sharing. I met with a friend this weekend who has a machine shop and we are going to work on replicating the windscreen for my 33% Barth kit.
Any ideas on fuselage panel templates?
