WACO YMF

Hey Mitch The plane is pretty much built per plans. Nothing as scaled as yours. Do you think the counter balance rudder makes for a better flying plane? didn't think about that.
How do you plan to do the pin stripes and blisters? WE know that decals don't like the curves. I used a two part vinyl on my 1/5 scale and they worked out great. A little heat and the vinyl conformed around the blister with no problems. The outline, cream on mine, was put on first, and then the black. it was much easier than it sounds.

Thanks guys
This is the 1/3 scale Barth. Its being built by a friend and retired club member that loves to build. This is the secant Waco hes built the first being the 1/4 Barth here's a few pics of the 1/4

It's just that the balanced rudder is to scale of the plane you're doing the color scheme of. I realize that you're not going to have it judged but it is an important feature of the "new" Waco design. It won't make a hoot of difference in how it flies though. Mitch
mrdhud, the decals are from two different suppliers, the decals on the fuselage are one piece ( red on black) from www.cal-grafx.com ) and the decals on the blisters are two piece (black applied then red applied over the top from www.kirbysgraphics.com ) . I must point out that the blisters are pain in backside to get right. I found the two piece thin vinyl decals a little easier to apply.
Best of luck and let us know how you get on with yours. If any one else has had better luck with the blisters please post some photos.

Dash, I realise that you built at 1/5 scale compared to 1/3 scale but I am guessing that the degree of difficulty would be about the same as far as trying to get the decals to conform to the three dimensional shape of the blister. Did you find that wrinkles or cresses formed at the front and very hard ( impossible ) to smooth out?

I'm guessing that the curves on the 1/5 scale would be tighter than on 1/3 scale. but of course everything scales up. The slightly larger size of the blisters on 1/3 scale should be easier work with than the smaller scale. In any case, I had very little trouble putting on the graphics on my cowl. I think it's important to have a very smooth finish for the vinyl to adhere to, as well be it being very clean. I did have to warm a few up a little to allow them to conform. Putting on the inside color was not a problem as it was not difficult to tell when they were not centered. Dennis expects you to have a few problems at first and provided a few extra sets of markings for the blisters. The only problem I had with my model was the scollops on my rudder, which I don't believed showed in the photos just above. In any case, I'm still very happy with the way it turned out.

Thanks Dash, might get another set of decals ( maybe a couple of sets ) and have another go at them but I don't think I got that much better at applying them by the time I got to the last of the ones I have already done.

If you were using traditional dacals, I can understand your problems. They don't have any stretch. The very thin vinyl provided by Kirby does stretch, and I think that's the difference. If you would like Dennis' phone number, let me know.

I built a 1/6 WACO and I also used the vinyl decals from Kirbys Graphics. Dennis Kirby told me that I might have a little difficulty with the blisters at first so he included some extra decals for me to experiment with. I found that by applying some heat to the decal and smoothing them with my finger I was able to cover the blisters very nicely. Dennis is a pleasure to talk to and he can give excellent advice.
Dash and cdbarker, thankyou for your input. I will say that both companies provided excellent service and were forthright with the suitability and shortcomings of their products. I did have conversation with Dennis and he did supply me with extra decals, I must add that because I had already applied the decals on the fuselage from Cal-grafx, Dennis was concerned that his decals would be a different shade of red and therefore offered to supply his blister decals at no cost, a very decent gesture, one that I cold not accept, thus I purchased a complete set of decals but have only used the ones for the blisters. In light of the fact that other modellers have had great success with the decals on the blisters I must conclude that it is an area that is just beyond my capabilities.
