I put my AMR 1/3 YMF-5 kit in the classifieds. Went full scale instead! It's no Waco, but at least it's a bipe!

Save $500 off the new kit price plus $200 off duties from Canada. PM me for info.

Thread has really slowed down. Not too much interest anymore. Sad.

Default Currently Building YMF.

I am currently building an old Pica 1/5 scale Waco YMF. Fortunately it was missing the plans so when I ordered a new set on EBay it included the updates from the Waco Brotherhood. It is going to be 6 cell electric power with an SK5065-380 motor. It should swing an 18-6 prop and make around 2k watts of power. It is coming out relatively light and everything in the photo including all the servos weighs only 108 ozs. I have been finding multiple problems with the kits with things like the landing gear was not bent to match the plans. The main cabane struts are too long on the front leg by almost 1/2 inch. There are places where things exit through the covering with no balsa surface to stick the covering to. Some of the formers are not symmetrical or slightly to small where they needed to be moved aft a little to make the stringers curve smoothly (F11). I am also modifying how the outer struts mount to the wing because I didn't like the idea of using plastic angles. I was lucky and the kit already had a fiberglass cowl from Fiberglass Specialties included. Still it has been fun to build so far and I can't wait to fly her. I am hoping to have it ready for a maiden on National Model Aviation day.

New job left few opportunities to fly this year so only out 4 times so far. Session #3 had a bit of a hard landing in the wind that broke apart the rear gear mount loose in the fuse. As that is also the lower wing front anchor thought it best to call it a day. Also did some damage to the 16/8 wood prop earlier and the much heavier M/A 16/6 had it dragging along much slower. That weight may have been the reason for the drop on landing as I slowed down.

Along with the reassembly did some work on the wheel pants and straightened out the splayed alignment. It was getting a bit dicey on the ground when power applied, taking more right rudder than it used to. Had it back out last Sunday getting ready for an event in a couple weeks and still seems to drift to the left on power up. Cannot remember it being that strong, but left no toe in on this and may be the reason.

Previous post mentioned some updates. Any way to get more info on those? I have another 1/5 Pica set aside for retirement and that one will have float attach points.

Dan Hudson has collected the documentation and drawings for the changes to improve the Pica WACO and make it more true to scale. You'll find the stuff on his web site, Wix.com clasicair created by mrdhud based on blank-website | Wix.com - but you'll need a browser that will handle Adobe Shockwave Flash. If you have trouble with that, let me know, and I'll email you the files.

I've managed to get hold of two Pica 1/5 kits, and plan to build the first one with only slight modifications (like the longer wing spar joiners), and put a DLE 20 engine in it. When I get around to the second one, I'll make that one more to scale. I have the engine for it already, too: a UMS Evolution 7-35 seven cylinder radial.

My Moki 250 is due to arrive next week ( after 10 yrs of drooling) so will post some pics of the install. Was meant to be on a trip around this vast and varying country of ours but one of my grandsons was hit with a very serious case of burst appendicitis that has necessitated that we delay for a bit. Will be doing some other upgrades' on a few things as we re power and will be calling in on two other modellers in Sydney that have purchased Barth 1/3 scale kits to offer advise on the scale landing gear.

Hi Tmac, there is a new radial on the market in a few weeks. It is a Valach engine also a 5 cyl. radial. Its a bit heavier as the Moki but has capsulated rockers a bit maintenance friendlier, and comes with an electrical fuel pump. I have seen the first series type running at an exhibition in GE. It seems to be a good alternative for the Moki . You can find the engine under Toni Clark practical scale GmbH - Zenoah Titan ZG Motoren, DA Motoren, Valach Motoren, Paolo Severin Bausätze, Zubehör activate news button Valach 250ccm.

Thanks Pete. It looks interesting but too late on the market for me! I am sure that I will be happy with the Moki.

Yeah Tmac the Moki is a well known and reliable engine, no worries about that the Valach is only an alternative with a bit more power (swinging a 34 x 18 propeller with nearly same RPMs as the Moki) and has a fuel pump which allows the tank to be mounted in the CG not taking care at all of the carb distance and requires less maintenance actions (e.g. checking the preassure line from the crankshaft housing to the carb for grease or oiling the rockers). Therefore the Valach is a bit more expensive and taking all into considoration (e.g. pump and batterie for the pump) heavier as the Moki.

That would be great. Looking at getting a new mount 50 mm longer than the one supplied . interested to see what others have done in the way of mounting the 250!
