Arthur,

This is what I have so far of the YKS. The pictures should be self explanitory, any questions, just ask. I have some more, but this should hold you for a bit. Sorry about posting the upper interior twice.

I don't know if you've thought about it so here's a tip for the scaling in your photos. Get a white or yellow folding carpenter's rule and modify it like this: Using black electrician"s tape or black paint, cover every other inch segment of the rule for 3' or 4'. Simply lay or hold the rule against your photo subject to include it in your shot. The black segments' contrast to the color of the ruler show up extremely well in the pictures and you have the scale references right there on each photo. There you have it, instant scaling regardless of the size of the picture. Just perfect for e-mailing to your friends!! That's how the plastic model car designers do it in the field. I helped Revell/Monogram do some race car stuff a few times.

I'm most interested in the sheetmetal portions of the WACO YMF; access panels, luggage compartment and the engine cowling's access panels and rivet detail. Also interested in cabane and interplane strut end-fittings. Oh yeah, landing gear details too! And the landing lights and tail marker light and, and, and..........

Ken,

Your wing tips look good. Here are some pictures of a UBF-2 aileron. From the front (note the curve of the bottom), from the rear and along the bottom. The last photo is from the YKS showing the aileron spar. It was interesting to hear from the Waco Mechanic that most of the ailerons were interchangeable between models.

As to the control surfaces, the leading edge of the ailerons are a little different top to bottom (the curve in the surface is different. This allows the aileron to follow the shape of the wing (in the tip area)

Makes sense, try to standardize parts as much as possible. In the book you sent me, it tells of the specific airfoils used in the different a/c in the museum. Seems like most of the '30s era Wacos had very similar airfoils as well as wingtip planforms; it was just a matter of varying span and dihedral between top and bottom wings and between models.

Your pictures have me itching to wander around and poke into every nook and cranny of the restoration areas. I'm really looking forward to getting out there. Sorry you won't get to see my UMF in person, I don't think I trust US Scare......I mean Useless Air...... I mean US Air to get it there in the same condition it left here. I certainly hope to have maidened it by then, hope to have video anyway.

Ken,

Damn, I was looking forward to seeing it up close. Best wishes for a succesful maiden flight. Bring some good walking shoes (and the asprin and sunblock), there are about 90+ hangers at CCA (fortunately most of the Waco hangers are near the Museum, which is up front) but there are many, many other interesting aircraft on the field.

To all:

Chris has the updated list of Plans, Kits and Documentation posted on http://www.houseofmoy.com/waco/ . I will have to convert the index to another format for him to convert to PDF for the website.

I just recieved info from Dario Brisighella Jr. [[email protected]] that the larger, 21% plans for the Waco ARE are available via paypal at his email address for $65, Shipping & Handling included. Plans are rolled and delivered via USPS insured. The AMA has the plans for the 1/6th, 70" ARE. Dario will be out of town for the next week, so hold off until he gets back.

John, Wow, those photos are gold. The restoration people must have too much work cut out already to post such photos. It is serendipity that you are there with camera in hand and an interest in this forum. I appreciate the photos immensely. Who wouldn't I suppose. On Barnstormers a man was looking for an empenage for a cabin model but stated that the YMF parts would work as well. Made me think. I realize there are huge differences in construction methods between early and later cabin types but one can't have too much information. I wish there was an equivalent cabin model to the small Pica, just for it's manageable size and my working space, vehicle, etc.
Thanks greatly, Arthur

Jay,

Don't have anything from a YMF yet, hopefully during the Fly IN, Ken and I will be able to photograph every square inch of a YMF (preferably an original 1930s model). Here are a few from a UBF-2 (NC 2091K). Tail Light, Wingtip light from straight underneath, Landing light with unopened inspection port, front port cowl panels, cabane struts, Landing gear to fuselage area, upper interplane struts, forward cockpit with door and screws. I do have more, but not a YMF, they are from another UBF-2 (NC 12002) (baggage compartment with lock and interior views, see earlier posts)

John, I've seen lots of different models with the varnished "sticks" under the top wing. Are they to stiffen the structure and support for the tanks? They always seem to be under the center section, or at the same area on either side of the center (as on the cabin models).

Ken,

The mail just came and I got the info from Claude M. The plane Claude modeled was a rare S3HD-A, s/n 3954, Cuban Military s/n 23, completed July 30, 1935. S=Pratt & Whitney 9 Cylinder Wasp Jr 420-450hp Engine (400hp indicated in drawings), 3 = would indicate the higher 450 hp engine, H = all "D" series, D = Military Series 1934-1937, -A = Armed variants of the "D" series. According to Claude's documentation, there was only this one S3HD-A built and it crashed shortly after being delivered to the Cuban Military. The subject aircraft was basically the same as the WHD-A except it had the vertical tail from the YOC custom cabin series. Airfoil was the Clark "Y", with modification to reflex the trailing edge in areas of the ailerons and center section. The ailerons were interchangable between upper and lower wings. This plane had the 2 centerline cabane struts similar to thase seen on S3HD N 14048 (pictures on Airliners and the National WACO Club sites).

Ken,

The sticks are external fuel tank supports as indicated in the front view on plate 2 of the HAA YMF Drawing by Paul Matt.

BALSA - PLY
This company is also good. Prices are a few cents less depending on what you buy. Quality and delivery about the same as Lonestar. The more choices the better.

Dan, I didn't do it, honest. It was stopped at the 12-6 position when I first saw it. Just now when I hit "Reply" it stopped at the 3-9 position. Lets hope it starts turning again when I finish this reply (don't want to see you sweating 'cause the prop stopped)

The plane you pictured is very similar to the original plane modeled by Pica, NC 14031 (Dark Blue with Cream Trim). Your inspirational plane may have some gold trim that NC 14031 did not have.

Oh, good, it's turning again, whew, you can stop sweating now Dan.

I got my 5/32" X 3" X 36" balsa from SIG. Quality is excellent. I'm sure the other balsa suppliers will cut the 5/32" for you as well though. I did not see 5/32" listed from any of them if memory serves me. There are a few parts in the 1/5th scale PICA WACO that are a little bit too large to be cut from 3" stock but I just edge glued some scrap together to make them. No problem.

KHODGES- did you read my bit about the scaling ruler?? Post #2426. Better pack it in your checked baggage, huh?

STICKBUILDER and all: The original PICA molded cowl blisters seem to be way too 'tall' compared to photos I've been seeing. We need to examine if they can be made thinner without making them too short length-wise.

I guess it would depend upon who the tinsmith was who did the particular cowl. When you look at the different planes (within the same alpha identification) you can see some difference in the cowl diameter. This would probably make the difference in the blister height. They did have to clear the rocker boxes on the Jacobs or the Continental. If you look at the cowls with the lower silhoutte blisters, the cowl appears to have a larger diameter. Some of the cowls are massive looking especially at the transition area from vertical to horizontal. Look at some of the pictures and tell me if you see the same thing that I see. And, when you get the cowl painted, with the appropriate scallops, the blisters appear to lose some of their size.

Van,

I know of 3 Waco's and a Travelair under restoration by museum personnel. There are more aircraft on the field that are being restored by individuals.

The SIG ARE ARF is actually the same scale as the smaller Pica kit/plans, 1/6th. AMA has plans for a 52" SRE by H.Osborn. you would need to have them enlarged or the 70" ARE by D.Brisghella reduced to about 59-1/2" for a 1/7th scale plane.

Ken, I've got the folding rulers, dont need to bring one. Thanks Jay for the tip.

Jay,

Look at the photo that mrdhud just posted. The cowl is huge, and the blisters are small. Go back and look at some that Skylarkmk1 has posted. The cowl is smaller in appearence, and the blisters appear to be larger.

A different cowl, HB-UPZ, note the difference in the radius and length from the opening to the cowl bumps and the opening appears to be larger. And to throw something different into the works, N 30056, registered as a YMF WACO, has a ring cowl.
