RE: WACO YMF
Finding small screws for the 1/5 scale has proven to be a challenge. Was pleasantly surprised to find 080 pan head at Ace Hardware of all places. Grabbed as many as they had and ordered a couple hundred more for the fuselage panels. Will wait on the coping stitch until the fuselage panels are installed - then time to learn how to sew. Need to find a Rosie for that! Trial fit of the windshield looks good. The fuselage panel screws make such a nice detail IMO.
RE: WACO YMF
Yeah it's tough to see them. Hoping they'll show up for early morning dawn and twilight flights. Your lights came out really nice. Everything looks good on your plane Anthony. Time for Lights Camera ACTION!

Looks good,
I found my lights didn't show up well during flight but they look really good during low light on the ground.
Later!!

Joe - your coaching on the louvers worked great. Here my first prototype. Not quite happy with it yet but feel with a couple more prototypes I'll be able to get these to turn out OK. Thanks again!

RE: WACO YMF
OK good to know Joe. Sounds like Aluminum is best. Ihad thought of 080 plastic but it is a different strategy - more fragile and working with the heat gun to sculpt each one. I think it will be hard to keep it consistent. Your approach is best I think.

It looks like you have the principal down pat. Now all you need to do is to get the shape and size right on your punch. A friend and I tried this technique on brass yesterday. It didn't work well at all. The brass, being somewhat softer at the thickness we used, didn't cut very well, and wrinkled the material beyond being useable. Joe

RE: WACO YMF
First Aileron rod completed. This will be functional as I'll fly with two servos on the bottom wing - to save about 1/4 pound for the top wing servos and leads. I weighed today and was disappointed to be approaching 14 lbs for the 1/5 scale. The 10S / 5000 mAh lipo is 3 lbs of that. I am going to experiment with different props and see if I can make 8S work. Currently set for 20X10 which should provide scale flying at 1/2 throttle and pull for the loops when needed. Running a Neu 1515 2Ywith 6.7:1 which provides exfficient power / low weight with 10 min flight times. Was hoping to stay under 12.5 lbs and still have lots more detailing to go. Will look for ways to shave where I can.
RE: WACO YMF
Starting the Aileron corrugations. .040 half round from Evergreen scale models. First coat of paint and lines marked out Thinking of canopy glue to attach them to the film. A little nervous about this.
RE: WACO YMF
My pilot (Joe) arrived today. Thanks Alex @ iflytalies. He looks great but weighs 6 oz. I might have to put him on a diet / detach his legs. I really don't have the heart. His shirt was a little wrinkled from the UPS trip but that should remedy once we get air born.
Anyway Joe says hi to all the Waco brothers. Have a great day of Sunday of flying. Happy landings and Joe thinks he'll be air born in a week or two.

Hi Mike,
the upper wing center is of course during assembling process adjustable, but do to the fact that the brass parts as connecting devices between upper wing center section and strut are soldered or glued in place you will not be able to adjust the AoA after having placed the brass connections. The wing struts are different, they are even after having finished their assembly still by a certain amount adjustable. Of course center wing AoA and outer wing panel AoA should be the same.
For the latest building instructions please refer to (https://www.dropbox.com/s/jsxzex50x4...20customer.pdf), these are the instructions for the latest version but outer strut assembly did not change much and might give you some hints how to do the assy.
As far as the hinges are concerned you may of course use what you are happy with but you will loose scale appearance as the hinges which are with the kit are close to scale. Specially the elevator one the full scale has only two hing points one on the outer side and the second is in the fuselage below the vertical stab..

I located the build instructions and now understand it much better. The information is on the plans, but the photos and text really helped. I will build the tail per plan, including the ball bearings, etc. No Robart hinge pins.
IF I go with an internal design for elevator, I can locate the servo somewhere inside. Your instruction manual for later model (see photos) shows a lever arm between the center bearings for elevator. I'm unable to find anything like that in my kit. Can you recommend a source?
Thanks,
Mike Hopkins

Don't forget to safety wire those puppies; they WILL vibrate loose and the body will fall off.

Sorry Mike,
no source for the lever, this is just self made from a scrap metal sheet I found in my work shop. I silver soldered the lever to the axis but placed a steel pin in the center of the lever going threw the axis to increase margin of safety not only having to rely on the silver soldering.
Fine that that the building instructions are helping to make your built move. Have fun

RE: WACO YMF
Hello friends, just a quick note to let you know my 1/5 Pica Waco made its maiden flight yesterday at the Club de Aeromodelos de Chile field. At 14,5 pounds and an OS 160 Twin, it flew great with lots of power. No nose weight added (in fact ended up slightly nose heavy). Landing was on wheels. (Much easier than my 1/6 Midwest Stearman). The colors are not really to scale but only you guys will know that I will post a couple of pics in a few minutes.

Pilot came fromiflytailies.com He's got some nice detailing - even has abs. Must be all the Gs he pulls in the Waco. This pilot kinda looks like me. Kinda freaked me out at first lol.

hopkimf, Mike, just for info on tail feather modifications, if you go to page 10 of this forum and look up input from bigbboy99 and follow it through you will see his redesign of instillation which he says worked out very well. he uses carbon fiber tubes and sheet for parts of his build..

RE: WACO YMF
Well my cheater WACO is almost finished just a few more minor details and she'll be ready for maiden flite after an engine break in period of course. As you can see in the pics the blue tape shows what one of the issues are. At some point when I can reclaim my hobby room I'll be able to build my Pica 1/5 scale kit, but for now this one will have to do, but at least one will be a gasser and the Pica kit will be a nitro burner.

I'll take a look. Was the Barth Modelbau the one with removable tail. I remember something like that.
