Jinxx, Both Pica kits have a "front load" fuel tank. I suspect you may have a one of scratch build. Is the lower wing permanently attached? Both version of the Pica have removable lower wings. Sorry I can not give you more information.

The lower wing can be removed and provides access into the fuselage. I believe this plane was built from plans and not a kit but I don't know who's plans. By front load do you mean through the firewall? What would me the best way to access it in that case...cut through the firewall or try and cut in from the top of the fuselage?

I would remove the lower wing and if possible cut through the formers and remove the tank from the rear, rather than trying to cut a hole in the plywood firewall. Several of us have converted the Pica kit where the tank is accessible from the rear.
Then you can cut some pieces of lite ply or balsa, and reinforce the formers you cut, thus making the tank accessible in the future.

My 1/5 Pica did not have access to the tank through the firewall, perhaps built that way from the start. Everything was pulled out anyway to access the back when installing the 125 as different mount bolt pattern and due to repairs to the front of the firewall. At this time I replaced the tank and used plastic tubing for all the runs. Much easier to route and work with than brass.

I opted to build a retaining bulkhead into the servo tray, as it would be relatively easy to pull in one go, (the servos would be in the way otherwise). Since both wings come off for transport this is easily accessible.

The Pica as kitted used maple engine bearers that extend from behind the tank location through the firewall to mount the engine. This necessitated an upright engine mounting. You did as I did I built another plywood firewall and epoxied and screwed it to the original and to the maple mounts that had been cut off flush. I then opened up the formers to pass the tank through. I like the way you handled the servo mount as the plans/instructions don't give much information on where to place the servos,
pretty much leaves it to the builders imagination. Which is not a bad thing.

Paint job done.It's automotive with clearcoat over decals and paint. Only glitch was decals. I had two color and was going to pick up a roll of 1/8 red striping tape for wings and tail to separate the black and yellow before clearcoat.. But my painter called and told me he was putting decals down and was going to clearcoat and get it out that day. Time is money in bodyshop. So much for red with black over top. He had the black down when I got there. If this were a contest plane I would have a big issue. If it was a car body, sand it off and do it over. Not here. Another glitch came in N number position. not quite right. Other than that It does look good. N number comes from a full scale Bonanza. November One Charlie Echo. 'Nice' name.

I guess I could. Easy enough to lay it on wings and tail. But with all the curves in cowl blisters and wheel pants, it looks like a tedious job. Plus all the letters on n number.

Perhaps a couple of black lines on the fin-rudder similar to the fuselage side would enhance the tail area.

Mike,when she is assembled I bet you will be more than happy with the end result. I believe that we do get a little anal at times when something does not go as planned.

YMF Barth 1/3
For cockpit combing I used 3/16 ID x 3/8 OD neoprene tubing 80 duro. I never could make a straight cut to split the tubing whether neoprene or vinyl. It was always snaking around and so forth. This time I slid a 3/16 steel rod all the way through the tubing with a couple inches sticking out. Then I put it on the band saw with the steel rod just touching the side of band saw blade. Using the blade as a guide I pushed it through until I had enough cut. Made a short practice run first. Worked slick and took off just enough so it slips on just like I hoped. Maybe I'm a slow learner and others have been doing this forever, but it did work well.

3rd surgical procedure is tomorrow morning at. 10:00. Y'all keep me in your thoughts and prayers. Oncology work will begin next week. Chemo and radiation. Wonder how I'll look bald.

My 8 1/2 year old daughter had ewing's carcoma and looked wonderful bald. She went through 2 surgeries and 2 forms of chemo, the second was experimental, and is now protocol, My daughter is 33 now and the mother of my 11 year old granddaughter. Here's wishing you a speedy recovery just like my daughter! You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Good luck with everything. FYI I had chemo twice and never was bald. Depends on the chemo that you are given.

We must all be getting to that point of our life when our age starts to catch up to us. Have the wings masked out to paint the red with black pin stripe but waiting for surgery date to have this bloody back fixed so might not get the painting done in the near future.

LOL....I'm 64 and 2 surgeons told me I need back surgery too. They told me I wouldn't recover in time for my son's November wedding so the wait is on. Still need to start my 1/6 Waco.

I have been trying to receive a copy of his plans for the built up wings for the Byron STA. If someone has a copy of these plans I sure would like to purchase a copy.
