I just acquired a Pica 1/5 scale Waco at a swap meet this past weekend and would love to join the "Brotherhood". Looks like all the posts on this site will be of great value.
started reading through all the posts and looks like I have a lot of reading to do LOL. I love building these old planes. Just finished a Sig 1/3 Spacewalker powered by a DA 50 and have now 6 flights on it and it flies beautiful. Looking forward to starting this build.

Add me to the brotherhood as well. This is a mission to finish my dad's Waco.
ETA: if anyone is in the Austin TX area, I could use some help making sure I build this thing correctly. I inherited it half finished, but it still needs 90% of the work done

So the Waco that I picked up has the fuselage partially framed in and I am wondering if anyone has full scale dia. of the formers. I intend to copy all the pieces I have so at a later date I can build another. I have ha the planes copied with that in mind. I have done this with several other planes that became my favorites. I also plan to install a dle 20 cc in this plane and wonder what thoughts anyone has on this. I think it should have enough power, I am using a 20 on a Balsa USA Citabria Pro that I am finishing up on now. Thanks for any input you can give And thanks all for the warm welcome.

You can also get the Pica plans from the AMA. they have all of templates, this was done by our # 1, stick builder a long time ago to help the AMA and us, the model builders. Also printers vary the size of the figures printed from one page to another as I am finding out with my current project
Hello all, I have been reading this whole thread, unbelievable how much knowledge is assembled here...I love it. I just got the Dave Platt 1/6 kit and will be starting on it soon. I plan on putting a Magnum 1.20 on it. of course I will be implementing a lot of these mods as well. Can I join the brotherhood? any numbers left? I'm finishing up a old coverite Gee Bee E.

I need some battery advice from you guys. Since I'm use to electric planes having battery hatches I was looking for some advice on receiver batteries. I normally use a 2100 LiFe 2s pack, with the waco I normally take the plane apart and carry it home but I am able to leave it in the storage trailer where I fly like I did today. The plane has a power switch with a charging port but since the life requires me to plug in the balance port to charge I ended up taking the plane apart to take out the battery.
I figure I can make a removable dash and slide the pack in that way or buy one of the old style nimh packs and just leave it in the plane. I'm assuming since people have used those batteries for years I can just buy a 6volt pack and not have to worry about c ratings. I'm only using about 50mah for ten minutes of flight so I should have been fine tomorrow but I just can't bring myself to fly without topping it off first thing in the morning. My engine is a magneto type so I didn't have to worry about a battery for that.
Thanks, Troy

In addition to the wealth of invaluable information, tips and feedback contained on this thread, there is also a great build thread on RC Groups devoted to the 1/6 scale Waco with great pictures and documentation that you might want to take a look at. It helped me a great deal with my ongoing 1/6 scale build. Here is the link there.

Thanks for the reply Steve. From what I have read so far the LiFe packs are much safer then the lipos as far as keeping them in the plane. I think what I will end up doing is making a set of balance plug to servo plug cables and bring it in to the cockpit by the power switch. Eventually I would like to recover the plane and build the storage area behind the cockpit area as others have so I can move the connection into that area.
Also if you have an older style three wire power switch you can connect that to the balance port. I have an old cell pro 4 laying around that charges directly through the balance port and if you lay out the wiring properly you still use the power switch and connections as normal and are able to balance charge all through the one connection. You just have to remove the signal wire from the switch to the receiver so that you don't pass power through it into the receiver.

Control Throws for 1/3 scale Barth YMF-5
Can someone help me out with some recommended throw distances or angles for my 1/3 scale WACO YMF-5 (Peter Barth)?
The information that came with the kit is less than helpful.

swansons, in the bath building instructions under the section FLYING Peter recommends the following RUDER as much as you can get without fouling on the elevators.
ELEVATOR 20 mm up 15 mm down
AILERONS 25 to 30 degrees
Of course with modern radios we have the option of LOW MED & HIGH rates so you could set throws below and above what is recommended, but I'm sure you would not get into difficulties if you started with what Peter recommends.
Hope this helps (photos of your WACO !!! )

I have a 91 four stroke in my 1/6 and I find it to be more than enough power. I don't use full throttle at all. However, it is good to have a little reserve power in case of dumb thumb situations.

Tmac, Thanks for the info. My very early German to English instructions don't have this section in them.
BTW I note that you gave the elevator specs in MM and the aileron in degrees. Is this the way that Barth spec reads?

tmac ( a little late I suspect but I could copy my instruction manual and mail it if you liked.)
