So great to see everyone at Top Gun wearing the Waco shirts! We had some crosswind to contend with but it was very nice weather this year and a great group of pilots with incredible planes...

I was about a month shy of completing the Waco in time this year but hoping to finish soon and get some good flights in this summer. Having a lot of fun with the detailing and thanks to everyone who has generously contributed with tips to learn from.

David just sent a nice photo of the Stearman I flew this year in place of the Waco. We lucked out with some beautiful sky to fly in.

I have not used it on fuel planes as I only fly gas. I have been told that it is fuel proof if left to dry for about a week, which is what I do anyway on all of my planes.
I just use the "standard" rustoleum paint, they have a new "ultra coat 2X that is supposed to eliminate priming. I have not tried that yet. I have never had an issue with it and always gave me a very durable smooth finish. You may want to try a test piece first to see if fuel bothers it. I have friends that say it is safe up to 20% nitro.

Michael saw your Stearman at Top Gun, very nice. You are right about the weather, really could not have been nicer. Lots of amazing looking planes this year. And some of the Saturday flying shows where fantastic. So much talent in one place. Top Gun, Florida Jets, and !2 o:clock high never miss them.

Dan, not your fault,I received what I ordered, I messed up plain and simple! Time to move on and await the next issue, in fact I think I might get myself some WACO shirts done here locally, I will post photo of shirts when done.

At Long last I have finished my 1/3 scale Barth Waco YMF-5. Alas! it seems to be nose heavy with the Moki 215 installed. Not justa little, but over two pounds of tail weight seems to be required to attain the CG on the Barth plans.
Has anybody else had this problem? I have measured this about 4 different ways and they all seem to come out within a few ounces of each other.. I just can't see adding that much weight to the bird, it weighs 46 lbs already.

John. I have a DA 150 in mine and although it may not weigh as much as your MOKI I have a very heavy 2 inch solid alloy engine mount and a alloy front behind the cowl, all up I am sure I would have as much weight up front as you have. I also have all my battery's behind engine mount. With this set up my CG came out at 8 1/2 inch's behind leading edge of top wing. Have not flown mine yet but pretty confident that it will be close enough to be controllable By the way I would be happy if mine only weighed 46 lb

Hey guys, I have a Pica Waco YMF 3 kit for sale, 60" wingspan. I had it squirrelled away for a rainy day but I'll be dead before I find the time to build and fly it.

Anyone interested? I considered just putting it on ebay but not sure if that's the ideal way to find the very best home for it.

Here is my layout with the 1/5 Pica. Was a bit of work to build the servo bays in the wing to replace the stock bellcrank setup, but would have been a lot simpler during initial construction. Same with hogging out the rod slots in the ribs and feeding the extensions to the center. Well worth it, though.

As they say "the third time is a charm", that is how many times I had to revise the pushrod dog leg bend to get the right amount of throw on the elevator. I ended up lengthening the quick connect side by about 3/8" from the plan drawing to get it to work. Also ended up using the same dog leg bend on the rudder side, which is totally different than the plans. Elevator throw result is 1-3/8" twice what the plan recommends and almost 2" throw on the rudder. Attached is a picture of the final set up. Hope it helps.

Hello WACO Brotherhood. Wow, what a long thread, 731 pages! I hope you won't be offended if I ask a question without actually reading all 731 pages.
My question concerns the Great Planes WACO YMF 1.20 ARF and engine selection.
I have an OS 1.20 Surpass II that I could use but I would like to have a little more power than scale.

The EVO 735 weighs in at 3.1 lbs and will likely make you nose heavy. I flew mine with an OS 1.60 Gemini Twin which weighed 11.5 ounces less and swung an equivalent sized prop and had a higher RPM range. If I recall correctly, I did not have to add any weight to balance properly and I think it flew scale-like at 1/2 throttle. No cutting of the cowl required except for the a notch in the back edge of the cowl for the exhaust pipes to sneak out. The Saito might not be a bad choice. Its close weight-wise and a lot cheaper but you lose the sweet sound of a twin and I don't think it will swing as large a prop as the OS twin.

I've got the OS 1.60 in a GP Super Stearman and it is a good choice for the Stearman. What I didn't like was waiting 15 weeks for a muffler from Keleo Creations for the 1.60. I would love to use the radial but I certainly don't want to add weight to balance it. Of course the Saito 1.50 is out of stock. What about the 1.20R3?

For the GP WACO you don't need a Keleo muffler. Two lengths of slip-fit K&S brass tubing. Heat them cherry red and let them cool, then bend to shape. A simple strap made of brass and screwed to the firewall will capture the rearward ends and keep the pipes in place. If you want a pressure tap, that is easy to add as well. Total of about $3.00 in materials.
