Dan, someone in the family may have some. Grandfather passed on in 1955 and his planes were sold. I was 11 years old at the time and was not happy that they were selling his planes. A few years later I traded a motorcycle for a J3 Cub that I wound up flying from his grass strip. Somewhere there is a photo of me with the Cub. I haven't seen it in 50 or so years.

Glad this thread is still here. About 6 years ago, for too many reasons to go into, I had to put my Barth 1/4 scale project aside. Now I'm just getting back into it and all of the things that puzzled me then are starting to come back. As the photo shows, I have all the main components built. Peter calls for the stab to be adjustable but I just don't like this idea. It doesn't seem strong enough. The TE of the stab is only held down with two lite-ply yokes at the end of the fuse. This is the stab pivot point. The front of the stab is only held in place by a 5M nylon adjustment bolt. This leaves only the wire struts to give it any stability. He calls for a +2 deg. AoA for the stab. My instincts tell me to just glue it in at the recommended + 2 deg. and forget this adjustment idea. Any thoughts?

Ekim I have built the Barth 1/3 scale kit and decided against having the stab adjustable but I am very glad that the way that I did build it that it was easy to alter the AOA of the stab because I have adjusted it to what appears to be more like 4-5deg of positive attack. In retrospect I would trust Peter Barth's instructions and build it the way he suggests. What ever you decide to do I would at least give thought to the fact that you will most likely need to adjust it after the first flight!.

Thanks tmac48. Ingenious idea. I have a BUSA Nieuport 28 that I wish I could alter the stab. Your larger scale afforded you some workable space for your idea but I think I can do something similar with this 1/4 scale. Thanks for the suggestion & photos.

Ekim, glade to be of help. The correct incidence of the wings and tailplane and the COG (start nose heavy- a pig to land if tail heavy) pay attention to all of these and you will find her a ***** cat to fly. I did not use any down or right thrust but that was only my decision so as to fit the 150 twin in the cowl. With rudder on take-off I have no problems, but will most likely add 2deg of right thrust when installing the Moki 250, but once again I do not think that this is something that is a must as long as you are ready to get on the rudder to counter the torque of the big props.

Wow! A Moki 250! Such a sweet motor. I'll be using either a G-62 or a DA-50 in this 1/4 scale just because I happen to have both. A radial would be nice but I'm not sure my 10" cowl would handle it, not to mention my bank account.
Ha! Loved your comment about what to call a baby cat. Until this crazy election is over I think I'll play it safe and just say "kitten"

Mike, I have the same bird on the table not quite as far along as you are and its been about the same time frame also. I tried several ways for the adjustment including Bill modification and went back to the plans setup, had the same feeling about the mods. and feel very shakey about the Barth design. I'm inclined do the same as you- hard mount in place at+2 deg. and go from there.

Thanks for commenting. I was hoping you would. I knew there was someone from a ways back that was building the Barth 1/4 YMF. Now I remember your name.
I like the idea of an adjustable stab and I've spent a lot of time trying to come up with a solution that I like, including Peter's design. There's just not enough stability to suit me. I'm just going to permanently mount it at his recommended +2 deg and move ahead.
Maybe I have a phobia about unstable stablizers��.

Hi all,

I'm sure that some of you have included the scale feature of the rough area on top of the lower wing that one may walk on to enter the cockpit. Sorry, I don't know what this is called...
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could advise me on how to model this on my 1/6th scale SRE (http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rc-s...c-plans-9.html).
Any tips are welcome, but bear in mind that I will be spraying the surface and have in fact already covered the wing with Oratex and sprayed this the base colour, having overlooked this feature slightly.

For your walkway, I used gloss black paint and sprinkled white sugar lightly.

Isn't there a special textured paint people use for the black surfaces inside cockpits? That might be good for walkways, too.
Alternatively, I've seen a 1:7 scale model with a strip of fine, black sandpaper (the kind meant to be used wet) glued on. Looked good, but was obviously too thick when you touched it.

My Father-in-law- (may he RIP) once said to me "George if it wasn't for bad luck,I'd have no luck at all" well I guess that holds pretty true so with that said. In my shop working on my Waco, don't know how it happened but it did flipping the fuselage over, lost my footing slipping (prosthetic leg) drop the fuselage it hits ends of the rolling table knocks the vertical fin completely off, breaks the stab where it glues on to the rear of the fuse and that takes a large bit of wood where it glues on. And to think I was almost done, so removed the covering got most of the repairs done. I think I'll take a break from it.

Oh man! Can I relate. Some days from the moment I wake up cannot count the number of things dropped and retrieved, only to be dropped again!

As long as you're O/K and the plane is salvageable guess things are better than they could be.

Sorry to hear that George! I have to say my models suffer more damage inside the house than in the field.
I once had a friend that had a wing ready for covering, stood against a wall with the root rib on the floor. Then his pet cat used it as a ladder, damaging every rib on the way up...

Anybody looking for a NIB Pica 1/5 scale WACO kit? I have one that has only been opened to inspect contents (wood is still packed as tight as it came from the factory). I really hate to do this, but I've come to the realization that I won't be able to build this kit. I've wanted one for so long, and finally found a kit, but i'm just not able to put the time and effort into the project that it so deserves.

I'm sure you are all familiar with the kit, so I'll just say that it's NIB, and it's all there (yes, I inventoried it to be sure). And thanks to some sweet talking and the wonderful people at Fibre-Tech n' More, I managed to get a very high quality YMF Cowl (yes, the 'bumps' are correct) and Wheel pants from them. Yes, I paid a premium for the quality, but it is worth it for sure. Very few, if any, pinholes that I can find anywhere on the parts. Definitely superior to stans parts for sure!

I'm asking $350 with the FG parts, $250 for the kit without them, the ABS parts are still safely snuggled in the kit box. I'm just trying to break even on the pricing, not trying to gouge anyone. I will consider any offer if you'd like.

I'll also include a thumb drive with documentation that i've searched out online, including the templates for the formers, ribs, and the scale spar modded wing ribs. I'll also include some drawings and printed media as well.

I'm hoping to take the hobby $$$ from this sale and pick up the ARF version (I know... it turns my stomach too) so at least I can enjoy flying a WACO!

Hello any body home? I've been flying the GP Waco and having ball with it. Mike president of the club was flying it some time back and the cowl, engine and firewall parted ways with the rest of the plane high in the air and he still managed to set it on the ground without as much as bending the landing gear patched her back up good as new.

Wow Dan! Your friend Mike did one heck of a job bringing that air frame down with no damage! I am still chipping away at the AMR 33%, I hope to start covering sometime after the first of the year. Happy Holidays to all!
