I have been looking up lots of engines. With a cowling that big, there are frankly lots of choices. I am certainly not going electric, mostly because I want the sound. Right now I am stuck on a twin, but the 30cc RCGF has 9" between the plugs and the cowling is 8 and change. I do not want to cut the cowl. RCGF makes a 21cc twin. It has to be more than enough power to fly this plane. The 1/6 I ad flew around at 1/2 throttle like a champ. I have seen folks in this thread putting Saito 1.80s in theirs. Heck, I even checked out a YS 1.40, just because last time I flew a lot, that was the bees knees.
To fly scale (not hover...lol), what is the sweet spot on the engine size for power, fits in the cowl with no cutting, and is heavy enough to offset the need to add nose weight? Gas/Glow does not matter to me.

The Evolution UMS 7-35 radial happens to fit perfectly. When I get around to building the 1:5 kit I have on the shelf, that's what I'm putting in it. The attached photo shows the engine inside the cowling from Fiberglass Specialties. I like how the valve lifter pushrods line up with the blisters, even though the way that happens is wrong: the engine in the UMF-3 would have the cylinders centered under the wide blister gaps, not the narrow ones, as here.

To be honest I was just looking at three cylinder saitos. Just sooooo expensive. Beautiful engine tom.
Lower wing complete minus dowel and extension exits. Plans flipped, moving on to the top wing.

Since I am building out of order, built ailerons next. Those planning on building this kit, I am making notes on my instructions and will upload when done. For the ailerons, make sure to glue to the bevel, not beyond at first. Also, bookend your pieces so you don't end up with four rights...lol. once you get the ribs in, glue the shaped bottom, then bevel the entire top to match rib profile. Don't forget about the ply pieces.

Got the wheel pants today, thanks Denny! They look great. I am pretty set on the 21cc twin gasser. I assume it will have more than enough power for scale flight, is a boxer so should be smooth, and will fit in cowl without plug leads sticking out. thoughts?

When building the wing center sections, they give you a sheeting layout for the bottom and top. I omitted a section to be able to clearly see the plans. Fitted, and pinned, of course, beforehand.
In the back there, is my muse, a dumas waco. Going to retrofit that for a small brushless for next winter....
I do not think I am going with yellow and black. Right now my top two are green and gold, and red and black.

I have a Saito 170 triple that I completely despise. Unless you run on board glow it will drop t bottom left cylinder every time you go to idle. Low to midrange transition is horrible as well. There is a company that has cured the problem on the large triple but they don't have a cure for the 170. It makes a nice paperweight. The OS FT160 Gemini is a great choice and the G26 is the best choice for a gas engine. Dan has been running a G38 but it's a heavy substitute and not one that I'd consider.

Hardwood blocks in...pain in the butt. One thing about a thirty year old kit, the wood is cured and stable...lol. yeah, they were about a 1/8" too wide so I trimmed them down to keep the ribs spacing on the plans.
Thought I would include some more 80s stuff, with this old quadra 35 I have. Have not used it in a while. Frankly it is so gutless, it might just make a paperweight to join stick builders saito. Haha.

Woo! Just bought another one on eBay! Guess this means I'll build one for the DLE 20 I have lying around here first, and then a more properly detailed scale project for the beautiful UMS 7-35 engine.
Now to start cleaning out the workshop to prepare for building... Where the heck should I put all this stuff? And what's all this junk doing here, anyway? It's all someone else's fault, I'm sure!

That dle20 rear exhaust looks good. I like the idea of the twin, but... I know lots of folks flying dle, not so many rcgf.
About 90 percent done with the wings. Still need to glass the lower wing joints, put blocks in for the hinge points on the wings. I cut out the plastic covers, will fit those when I final sand the wings before covering. I got coverall and stix it.

I built mine under similar conditions and some how it took me eight years to complete. I must admit I did suffer a heart attack and than had back surgery but it did seem as if I was never going to finish her and at one time I was trying to sell her ,bloody glad no one responded before a got my mojo back.

Should have everything sanded and prepped for covering by the end of the week. Then a little hiatus to Hawaii (work...). I bought coverall and stixs it. Never used it before, but... It really can't be that different.
