Thanks for that. I was thinking of doing the same but I thought it would be better to have a larger footprint at the firewall end. I have ordered a carbon mount from Comp arf that they use on the P47, and will see if I can adapt it to the Waco. I also have a alloy mount being manufactured that I will most likely end up using.Will post pics when I have them set up.

I tried to attach two photos to show how I did the installation of the Moki. I placed an additional case in front of the firewall and made a separate bulkhead which is laminated with birch ply and carbon fiber. 2mm of ply and three layers of carbon (back side, between the 2 ply parts and front side). The aluminum engine tray was srewed to the back side of this separate bulkhead whereas the bulkhead itself was screwed by shock mounts to the case. Your approach to make a new engine tray is a very good one. A friend did this as well enlarging the center bore where the tray is attached to the engine. This gives you the advantage to have a much better access to the carb. and to the pressure line which might have to be removed after a while to clean it because there might be some crease getting in from the crankcase.

Could you please post a few pics on how you are dealing with the battery mounting for that 6 cell. Did you make a hatch? Very interested in how the electric version turns out as I have been thinking about doing something similar.

Pete thanks for the pics, yes that was another consideration of mine. Will post pics of the Comp ARF mount that has the right and down thrust built in but not sure that I want to go that route. It sure is neat and tidy though!

Ready for the maiden flight
The plan is to maiden it this weekend weather permitting. It came out at 13 1/2 pounds ready to fly with the flight battery. I am using an old Hobby King SK 50-65-380kv motor with an 18-6 prop. The speed control is 125 amps. I haven't run it yet but expect around 2.2 Kw. The battery hatch is where the forward pilot would sit. I used a couple of magnets to hold it in place. The battery ends up being right on the CG so the weight doesn't really matter. The battery is a six cell 4000 with a 70C rating. I just made a plywood box where the fuel tank would go outlined by the original location of the hardwood engine mount beams. The plywood box extends about an inch in front of the original firewall. I also found that a liquid chrome marking pen from Molotow worked really well on the cowl blisters.

Hello to everyone for the past few months I have been reading and enjoying this thread very much. It has inspired me so much that I bought both the 1/6 and 1/5 scale Waco plans to build, also just received 1/4 scale plans from Wendell Hostetler's. I have started cutting for the 1/5 scale so I look forward to applying the things I've learned here, I've been building since 1984 and its been a pleasure to see that some are keeping the craftsmanship of the hobby alive. Hope this thread stays alive for future builders and I would like to become a member of the brotherhood . I am new to posting on thread blogs so bare with me as I will be learning as I go, when I get pictures I will try to post them as I go. Have a blessed day!

Successful Maiden Flight
The maiden went very well. The plane flies like it is on rails and looks great in the air. The roll rate was excellent but I had to mix aileron into the rudder as the differential was not sufficient even with only 30% rate down. My left thumb is too lazy to always coordinate the rudder. The first day was flying on an 18-6 prop which is way to small for my power setup. I propped up to a 20-8 and there was still more left in the motor (1.8kw on the ground). The 20 inch prop looks too big so I settled for an 18-8 with a wider blade profile. I am pulling almost 1400 watts on the ground and can do 400 foot diameter loops from level flight. It flew equally well from asphalt or grass. I considered the Pica kit a bucket list kit to build but was a little disappointed in how much engineering was required to assemble everything. The finished result was well worth the work and I have received many comments about how good it looks.

Battery Life
I only used a China Hobbyline 6s4000 70c battery pack. I didn't fly until a timer went off. The only flights were an 18-6 and an 18-8. I flew around 5 1/2 minutes and was at 3.94 per cell. I was only at full power maybe 10 - 15 seconds during the flight as it takes very little thrust to fly scale like. The motor and speed control were at air temperature right after landing. The red brick speed control does not have any on-board telemetry so I can't be more precise. I would think that 8 minutes would be possible if I flew it scale. The battery is on the CG so you could put in 5000 - 6000 battery and go even longer. I have been flying a Freewing AvantiS EDF jet and my timer goes off at 2 1/2 minutes on it with the same battery so the Waco seems like it is flying forever. The AvantiS pulls 2.4kw and flies at full throttle more than 75% of the time. If I went with an even bigger 20-10 prop that would cut the safe time down to less than four minutes but it would have enough thrust to hover on the prop but who wants to see a YMF do 3D aerobatics? .

Just wanted to share this: today, I received a package in the mail, with DVDs of WACO blueprints, from Aircraft Reports - Aircraft Helicopter Engines Propellers Aviation Manuals Blueprints Profile Publications Video. The contents look like just what I wanted, but there's more: as can sometimes happen in the mail, one of the DVDs was partly damaged, and the other completely unreadable. I contacted the company by email, and now, about an hour later, I have the complete data set. They set up a temporary download area for me, so I could pull it all down over the net. Now, that's what I call service!

I just got back from three months in England. My basement flooded, taking with it the fuselage. Wings and rest of the wood survived. Now I get to try to find another kit or try to reproduce the parts. Talk about a kick in the junk....
