Well I finally completed changing out all the electronics and motor. I measured the CG at 4.5" from the top wing LE, however..... hanging the plane by the top wing causes it to hang like a pendulum. So that does not seem like a good way to indicate the CG. What is the correct way to balance the plane to measure the CG?

mrdhud, Thank you for finding that info. However, my concern is not being able to locate the specification CG point. The 4.5" from the LE top, is from the pica spec sheet. My question is how to support the plane so it pivots correctly. My setup is to suspend the plane top wing from L-brackets at the 4.5" mark and measure the angle of the thrust-line for level. This works fine for the planes with a mid-fuse mounted wing, But the Waco top wing is well above the weight centerline of the plane so it hangs like a plum bob instead of a teeter totter (sp). The 4.5" point is in front of the lower wing LE so I can't use it for the pivot point. So, what kind of fixture would let the plane pivit so the CG is accurately indicated?

mrdhud,
Thank you, I would very much like to see your setup. I should have been more specific about the plane size. My pica 1/5 has one piece wings. I am looking at the "Vanessa" balancing system to see if that would work but my main concern is that by suspending the plane from above the vertical pivot point, the balance is not being indicated well do to the pendulum affect. Tx JJ

Thanks Dan. It looks like you supported the plane with the vertical dowels on the underside of the wing. What did you use reference as the "level line" on the plane?

So I built a "vanessa" balancer and it indicates a CG of 4 3/4". that is with batts and fuel and 10 oz in the nose. This system is still hanging the plane from the top wing, but that seems to be what the brotherhood is using so I am going with it.

This is what the ends look like when installed. Waiting for some carbon rod inserts to arrive so I can finish off the rudder leading edge. Will make the 3mm inserts for rod ends latter today when it cools down a bit.

LOL! I thought I was the only one who balanced planes that way! I hang them from the ceiling and get l L/R and F/B balance. Beautiful work as always TMAC.
On a separate note, I still have a fiberglass specialties cowl and pants if anyone is interested. I have had no luck in sourcing a 1/5 kit. For all the round cowl lovers out there, I did manage to find a 1/4 scale monocoupe 90 that if the Kansas weather ever breaks, will maiden soonish.
If anyone knows of a 1/5 Waco, please advise. I had a shot at one late last year but thought I was moving.... If you want the pants and cowl, PM.

This looks like it’s probably a 1/5, but details are sketchy:

I do not understand that attitude. I'm sorry, but the pictures are terrible. None show the specs of the plane - could be 1/6 or 1/5, or whether all of the formed parts are even there.
I'm sorry it didn't work out, but if I see another one, I'll let you know.

Not sure if anyone else made a 1/5 scale. but that does look like the pic from the Pica box.
Having said that, would be leery dealing with anyone not willing to ensure I'm getting what I pay for. How difficult is a few extra pics?......unless these are reposts.
