Well I finally completed changing out all the electronics and motor. I measured the CG at 4.5" from the top wing LE, however..... hanging the plane by the top wing causes it to hang like a pendulum. So that does not seem like a good way to indicate the CG. What is the correct way to balance the plane to measure the CG?

mrdhud, Thank you for finding that info. However, my concern is not being able to locate the specification CG point. The 4.5" from the LE top, is from the pica spec sheet. My question is how to support the plane so it pivots correctly. My setup is to suspend the plane top wing from L-brackets at the 4.5" mark and measure the angle of the thrust-line for level. This works fine for the planes with a mid-fuse mounted wing, But the Waco top wing is well above the weight centerline of the plane so it hangs like a plum bob instead of a teeter totter (sp). The 4.5" point is in front of the lower wing LE so I can't use it for the pivot point. So, what kind of fixture would let the plane pivit so the CG is accurately indicated?

On my 1/3 Waco I made a ply former that slide on the wing tube and ante- rotation pin be for the wings went on, this former had holes in it that I suspended the model by and when I found the hole that levelled the plane then that determined my COG.

Just got the gist of what you meant. I have seen others that hang there large models with straps wrapped around the fuselage, in front and behind the wings, a plumb bob hanging from the lifting point will point to COG.

I ended up making my own balancer out of plywood for my 1/5 scale Waco. I'll see if I still have it and post a picture

mrdhud,
Thank you, I would very much like to see your setup. I should have been more specific about the plane size. My pica 1/5 has one piece wings. I am looking at the "Vanessa" balancing system to see if that would work but my main concern is that by suspending the plane from above the vertical pivot point, the balance is not being indicated well do to the pendulum affect. This is what I ended up making to balance my Waco. It's made out of 3/4" plywood with 1/2" dowels to support the plane. Not much to look at but worked good.

Thanks Dan. It looks like you supported the plane with the vertical dowels on the underside of the wing. What did you use reference as the "level line" on the plane?

JJ the datum line is were you want the plane to be level when balancing the plane. Hope this picture helps

Decided to add aerodynamic balancer to the rudder, laminated a tip for the rudder and spliced it onto the rest of the trailing edge.

So I built a "vanessa" balancer and it indicates a CG of 4 3/4". that is with batts and fuel and 10 oz in the nose. This system is still hanging the plane from the top wing, but that seems to be what the brotherhood is using so I am going with it.
pic attached.

Terry,

Are the rod ends included in the kit or did you source them elsewhere? I don't remember seeing them in mine.

No they are not included in the kit. My first Waco ended up tail heavy even with the Moki 250 up front. The bearings and associated hardware for the rudder and elevator are rather weighty so I'm swapping them out for weight saving. These rod ends are 3mm alloy and I will turn up some 3mm threaded inserts and glue them into the rudder post, the rod ends will then be adjustable as far as depth is concerned. I purchased the rod ends on line, just do a Google search= alloy rod ends.
Regards tmac48.

This is what the ends look like when installed. Waiting for some carbon rod inserts to arrive so I can finish off the rudder leading edge. Will make the 3mm inserts for rod ends latter today when it cools down a bit.

LOL! I thought I was the only one who balanced planes that way! I hang them from the ceiling and get l L/R and F/B balance. Beautiful work as always TMAC.

On a separate note, I still have a fiberglass specialties cowl and pants if anyone is interested. I have had no luck in sourcing a 1/5 kit. For all the round cowl lovers out there, I did manage to find a 1/4 scale monocoupe 90 that if the Kansas weather ever breaks, will maiden soonish.

If anyone knows of a 1/5 Waco, please advise. I had a shot at one late last year but thought I was moving.... If you want the pants and cowl, PM.

This looks like it’s probably a 1/5, but details are sketchy:

You would not believe the response I got from that guy. My pictures are awesome, I will not take more or the kit out of the box. If you can't afford 300 bucks, you should not be looking. What a jerk.

I do not understand that attitude. I'm sorry, but the pictures are terrible. None show the specs of the plane - could be 1/6 or 1/5, or whether all of the formed parts are even there.

I'm sorry it didn't work out, but if I see another one, I'll let you know.

Not sure if anyone else made a 1/5 scale. but that does look like the pic from the Pica box.

Having said that, would be leery dealing with anyone not willing to ensure I'm getting what I pay for. How difficult is a few extra pics?......unless these are reposts.
