Still here. Still haven't flown mine yet. A few bugs that I need to work out with the engine. I sent a few PM's to folks asking how the CG/ CB of 4 3/4" worked out for them, but no response.

Dan still going on my second Waco. Not a 40% er unfortunately but still having some fun anyway! It is another Barth 1/3 scale about 65% of the frame-up completed currently trying to figure a way to install a heavier duty tail wheel and then to tackle a functional main gear set up.

Default YMF factory drawings?

Hello everybody,

I'm Mike and I really love the YMF. I can't seem to get enough of her, she's among a few others one of my all-time favorites.
For the last year I spent countless hours of reading through the various Waco threads, and kind of felt like I was living through all of it, kind of getting sucked into a really good novel.
Now im feeling like I'm 10 years late to the party. But I have the feeling it isn't over yet, although some of the old gurus are gone now. Quite disturbing when I'm looking at the dates and all of it took place a decade ago...

I'll ask my burning question first and explain later: Bill/Stickbuilder, may he rest in peace, had factory drawings of the original YMF-5. I believe he had them digitally and was willing to share them. Does anybody still have them and would be so kind to email me a copy?

Here the Explanation: I love designing, building and flying (model) airplanes. Strange coincidence, my diploma also tells me I'm an aerospace engineer I'm on a long journey right now, going on for more than a year. Before I left I built a small 1/10 scale Waco from scratch. I chose that small scale because it's not as complicated as a big one and I wanted to have it finished before going on my trip. Most of the wood came out of my scrap boxes. I did the complete design in Solidworks, cut / fabricated everything manually and it was a joy to build. I attached a few photos. Windshields are still missing as well as the cowling trim, radial dummy and more scale wheel pants. Didn't have time for that. The plane is covered with Koverall and painted with automotive lacquer.
After my journey I want to build a 1/4 scale one from scratch, so I have to start designing it now. Features will include an adjustable stab, landing gear with oleo struts, outlines as close to the original as possible. It'll be built to fly while providing a good base to detail it out as much one's willing to do it. As I'm fabricating / cutting most parts by myself without help of heavy CNC machinery, I have to take that into account too.

For the small Waco, as well for a photorealistic computer model I'm working on, I used a scan of Paul Matt's 3-views. I found them very impressive and detailed, but not accurate enough once CAD is involved. There are a lot of inconsistencies, and therefore a lot of guesswork involved. I spent countless hours scrutinizing every photo I found on the internet, but it's still guesswork to get everything right. And that's the reason I'm longing for those factory drawings. It's a lot more enjoyable to design and build something on a accurate base. That's the story, and I sincerely hope there's still somebody out there to read it and feeling inclined to reply ;-)

Mike

The first 5 pics show the small 1/10 Waco, the last is from an early stage of a 3d model I'm working on and which is a base for the CAD work.

Well apparently the policies of this lovely board don't allow me to post pictures with less than 10 posts. What are they thinking, would they like me to spam some nonsense in order to be able to contribute good stuff? Hmm...

I will try and look into this further. Janelle if by chance you read this post give me a call I'd love to hear from you, (863) 698-9706). I would love to see your 1/10 model if you email the photos I will post them for you. ([email protected])
I am signing you up and giving you a number to the Waco brotherhood so

Let's all welcome Deadly Flyfish ( Mike) to the Waco brotherhood. Mike you will be brother # 273 Looking forward to your build.

Hi mrdhud, Thanks a lot for your rapid answer!
Good to know somebody's still guarding the gates here - but of course, after a project is finished and flying it's usually time to move on.
I emailed you some pictures of my small Waco: 3 in the bones, 3 before the maiden flight. I will finish everything up after I return back home. Total time between the first sketches and the maiden flight was about 3 months.
As for the big one - it'll be a long time until I'll get back to my workshop (sometime next year). Until then I want to make sure I've the plans ready to go. Will also be enough time to make engine decisions (Evolution builds a sweet and affordable 7-cyl. 77ccm glow radial...).

Oh, I also sent you a computer generated image of a digital Waco model I'm working on. When it's done it will be photo realistic and make up for some beautiful images. It's also the base for the CAD work. While doing this I discovered all the inaccuracies in Paul Matt's drawings.

Delighted to hear from you,
Mike

What an awsome bird you have there. Love the paint job! And the sound of that big radial while the smoke comes on really gives me the shivers.

I also watched some of your other Waco flight videos. It doesn't seem to be impressed by wind at all, but looks like it doesn't really want to go straight on the runway. Maybe a gyro on the rudder would help?
In the air it's even more impressive - love some scale-like aerobatics with a big machine, not only going straight and level.

Cheers, Mike

Default It followed me home

Hi, My name is Andre and today I picked up a 1/5 Pico Waco.
I was searching for details on the plane when I found this place.
The content and scope is almost over whelming.

Fully admit this plane will require a lot of work and effort but when I saw it I couldn't pass up the opportunity.
It will require a full rebuild but I have all winter.
For the time being I'll start cleaning and assessing where/what needs to be restored.

Thanks.

Andre.

(I don't think I can post photos till I have some extra posts, sorry.)

Hi Andre,
Welcome to the thread. Obviously there’s not a much activity here as there was some years back. Maybe some new blood will get the juices flowing again with some of us older guys. For sure there’s not a prettier airplane than the Waco YMF, at least in my HO. There’s a ton of info here on the Pica kit, and hopefully some of the past builders will chime in to help you along. I have a 1/4 scale Peter Barth kit I started a few years back & then life got in the way. It’s about half complete & my goal for this year is to get back at it.
Good Luck,
‘Mike

Thank you, might have to work 275 into the plane’s id when I redo the skin.

Currently the plane is yellow with blue trim.
The previous owner thinks I am the 4-5th owner.

Thank you Ekim, this plane marks a change in direction for me. Have not touched or flown balsa in 20 years. So I’m pretty happy to have found this plane. Recently rejoined my local flying club and wanted something special.
Been flying electric foam planes.

Next part I need to find.
One of the control horns between the upper and lower ailerons is broken.
Looks like a simple inverted T shape.

Any idea where I can source or replace this with?

Getting lots of great ideas for hatches and battery bay access.

Thanks.

A.
