RE: WACO YMF
Thank you for your reply. The photos I have of the ubf, look almost exactly like a ymf other than the obvious i mentioned earlier. Plus the landing gear hook on the top wing for use on derrigibles.

NEW BROTHER ALERT!!!
Got me another one! froghair1, you are Brother #127. Welcome to the Brotherhood. on the issue of the shirts, please send me a pm telling me how many and what size you require. It is much easier for me to save all the orders in the PM format, than to try and hunt them down here on the forum. As I said earlier, John will have a wealth of information on the UBF-2. I posted the obvious differences, but I'm sure that there are several others that I missed.

RE: WACO YMF
Hi guys,
i am back after almost a year! Finally have enough energy and time to be back to the waco. Mostly framed. . . yee. now i need help with engine choice. originally i thought that i would go saito radial but the price....... so now to gas. I would like to convert a 4 stroke weed wacker but the weight is around 4 pounds. Bill how is that for balance? too heavy or ok ? i could go two stoke but the sound is not at all appealing to me. Anyone with craftsman weedeater experiance - i need to know how big this motor is (34cc) dimension wise ie. will it fit.
thanks

Apg,
I believe that the Craftsman 34 weedeater will be way too much in power, weight and size. Got to page 121, post 2829 and check out khodges G-26 engine with Pitts muffler in a COX/Pica non ARF. Bill did his G-26 engine on a Pica Kit with a standard muffler in post 3852 on page 162.

RE: WACO YMF
OK Bill, Froghair, you’ve done it now. There are lots of differences between the UBF-2/ QCF-2 and the U/YMF of the same time period, but there are some similarities as well. They are all in the Waco “F†series, construction is basically the same, dihedral is the same 2° and they all can carry 3 people (even if it is a bit snug). It is easier to tell the U/YMFs from the UBFs and the QCFs than it is to tell the UBFs from the QFCs.
Differences – size – The UBF/QCF have a wing span of 29’6â€/29’7â€, wing chord of lower wing is 57â€, a fuselage length of 20’9â€/20’4†with the U/YMF wing span at 30’0â€, wing chord of lower wing is 59â€, and fuselage length 23’4â€.
Engines originally installed –
UBF – Continental R-670, 210 hp,
QCF – Continental A-70, 165 hp (most have been re-engined with a 210 or 220 hp Continental due to the lack of available A-70 engines and the higher horse power).
UMF – Continental R-670, 210 hp
YMF – Jacobs L-4 225 hp (a fuel injected model is now available).
Other differences – Vertical Fin is mounted internally without fairings on the UBF/QCF, mounted internally and faired on the U/YMF. Landing gear – see pictures. Wheel pants – see pictures. Landing Gear fairings – UBF/QCF are fabric covered as were the original U/YMF. The newer YMFs from Waco Classic Aircraft have metal fairings. Wing/Fuselage fairing – UBF/QCF do not have them, U/YMFs do (the newer ones differ from the original). Cowls – UBF/QCF have ring (or speed) cowls, the UMF/YMF have mostly bump cowls (to fit engine), some have the larger Smooth cowl and at least one has a ring (speed) cowl. NAV Light placement differs between the UBF/QCF and the U/YMFs. There are more but this will do for starters.
The National Waco Club http://nationalwacoclub.com/index_001.htm has more photos of both types in their photo albums. There are also a 3-Views of the UBF on the last page of the F-2 photo album.

P1 – UBF-2 NC 2091K
P2 – QCF-2 NC 11247
P3 – YMF-5 NC 14081 a 1987 WCA Classic built from the original factory plans.
P4 – QCF-2 NC 9220J with 2 in the front cockpit
P5 – UBF-2 NC 2091K (QCF landing gear is similar)
P6 – YMF-5 NC 14081 landing gear

Mitch, I don't have it, but I'll be willing to bet that one of the Brothers does. Will you be in Lakeland in May? We will be staying this year instead of commuting. We'll be at the same Hotel that you were at last year (Hilton).

RE: WACO YMF
Mitch,
There is not a universal font used on all aircraft, it will vary by manufacturer, restorer/painter, and even where in the world the plane is registered. The font may even change on an aircraft from the registration marking to the warning and other smaller markings such as fuel type and "NO STEP" markings. A Stencil type font is often used for these markings on military aircraft. AmarilloUSAF is typically used for the clipped corner type of markings like found on Waco YMF NC 14081 and military type aircraft. Other aircraft use different fonts and styles. Some aircraft have the letters leaning fowards, aft, rounded, tall and skinny, no clipped corners and other variations. You best bet is to use the same font as used on the actual aircraft you are trying to replicate. Check the font styles available in your Word Processer, CAD or even the MS Paint program. See the rudder photos above of 2 different fonts used on Wacos.

RE: WACO YMF
I'll be at the same hotel for TG again. It'll be good to see you and Janelle again but.............you'd better not get all huffy over my Genesis YMF-5 wingtips. I had it all built and covered when you started jumping up and down about how wrong these are. So phooey and blaaaaaaaaaaaaaat . Mitch WB 100

RE: WACO YMF
thanks for the insight on engine size/weight. as far as power goes it is less powerful then a 26 cc two stroke by a good margin. i have yet to measure one so i dont know if it will fit in the cowl. - they just look so cool and the sound - um. . love it!

RE: WACO YMF
Thank you skylark for the info. all I need now is the color scheme, to make it real. I could alway. THanks agains SWAG it and make it a fun scale project, but I would like the original colors. I have a book that lists the standard colors for military a/c from all services but not much info on three or four different colors. Next stop, Pensacola . froghair1 waco brotherhood # 127

Pepsi-Cola is a far step from Port Charlotte. But that's the best way to prove your documentation. It's gonna get a tad on the cool side here in Leesburg tonight and tomorrow night. Bushes are covered up, and the heat's on in the shop. Stay warm.

RE: WACO YMF
FH,
You may want to try contacting Andy Heins at the National Waco Club, he has lots of info on the colors of the original Wacos and may have some info on the Airship utility planes, the XJW-1s, s/n 9521 and 9522. My best guess on colors would be silver or light grey on the fuse with yellow cockpit area, red or blue on the upper wing, silver or light grey on the rest of the wings and red, navy blue or black on the tail areas. Note that this is a modified UBF with wing/fuse fairings. Bold colors would be my first choices.
