Default old .40 p-51

Hello, I just recently bought a 54 in wingspan .40 size p-51. It is at leats 20 yrs old, minimum. the engine is mounted up right. the wing is covered in some cloth that kinda feels rubbery. if some one could help me with identifying both cloth and airplane It would be much apperciated.

Are you certain about the 20 year old part?
If so I'm going to guess a Mark's models fun scale P-51, covered with one of the Coverite "tex" coverings.

They were semi-common in the mid 80's, there have been other more recent 40 size sport scale P-51's from Great Planes and Midwest.

Yup, purtty hard to tell what you've got there without a PICTURE!

Just knowing that you have a .40 size stand off scale P-51s from a few years back dosen't narrow the field much. There were several. For some reason though, the name Jemco sort of jumped into my mind when I read the title of your post...

there was stafford, and house of balsa also but twenty years ago a span of almost 60 inches would almost be 60 size back then, the red box top flite i think was around 60 "span.

I would say its a House of Balsa P-51. I built one myself and it was a 40 sized plane.. and its in that time frame..

Bob, if it is a HOB the tail wheel will be mounted in the scale location via a plastic mount with simulated retract doors. It will also have the canopy and back turtle deck as a one part plastic part just like the 1/2a version.

I`m thinking if not the HOB then maybe the Jemco fun scale. It had built up wing with only the leading edge sheeted. Kind of boxy looking, but flew good. Then there is the old Jetco P-51.

I dont recall my P-51 as having a molded turtle deck. I could be mistaken but I believe it just had the canopy and a wood fuse.. I fiberglassed mine and painted it.. the tail wheel on mine did not retract. I have pictures around here some place.. hmmm

If you had a HOB 40 size P-51 and glassed it then it was a flying brick. Mine weighed like 5 lbs but that put the wing loading up in the low 30s. Got into an accelerated stall and the wing just stopped flying..lift just went to Zero.

I had one of the HOB P-51s with the fiberglass fuse....... Bricks fly better! A K&B .40 would barely get it off the ground...... I glassed and painted the wing and tail......

I ended up putting a K&B .61 in it and crashed it after a few knee knocking flights.......

It was a shame because it was a very nice kit in it's day........

You could PM it to me and I will load it for you, or try a free hosting site like putfile.com

You just up-load to your own web/gallery then copy the links to use in your posts.

Hope that helps"
Also what does the belly scoop look like? plastic or sheeted / carved balsa and scale or just simm'ed. and is the wing foam core / sheeting or built ? Jemco also used round L.E.

Jemco's fun scale 40 was 51" span, and I think the earlier Marks was the same -/+

I can't believe you folks had bad luck with HoB .40 Mustangs! I built four of them and they all flew beautifully....even put retracts in two of them to clean them up a bit. I used K&B 40s....plenty of power and they landed fine, no tip stalling. I even campaigned one in Pattern comp for a while. I never won, but I didn't do that badly and the airplane looked much better than the Kaos, Phoenix, Compensators and their ilk. I have both an unbuilt kit and a partially built glass fuse version in my "retirement" stack of things to build.
My two cents.
