RE: Top Flite Taurus
I also bought a ready to go Taurus at a swap meet in Sacramento. It looks exactly like Jim Messer's picture with a Veco 50 in it. It is silk and Hobby-Poxy (?) and has a LARKS decal on the wing. This is my third and it flies great. The best one I built sometime in the 70s, covered it with Mono-Kote and put a ST .60 up front. You could roll it as soon as it cleared the ground on take off and it would glide like a sail plane at 5 1/2 pounds. The current kits-- do they have the molded leading edge??

RE: Top Flite Taurus
The kit by Jeff Petroski has a traditional leading edge instead of the shaped leading edge of the original Top Flite kit. Jeff says the shaped L.E. tends to have the ribs come through it during landing "trauma", and the traditioinal L.E. is a bit more weight, but stronger. He has also engineered other changes into his kit such as thin ply doublers on the fuse for added strength, and a place to mount a servo in each wing rather than the traditional aileron horn. For more info, contact Jeff at:

There is another kit made by a person from Sylva ,NC. Maybe someone has his e-mail address

RE: Top Flite Taurus
hi
I have searched for a very, very, long time to find plans for the taurus. plans are available with they do not show rib and former patterns. the taurus had a special airfoil that made it fly like it did and without the rib outlines building a taurus wing would be impossible. it you succeed in finding something here please let me know.
there is as kit called the primus which is apparently very close in design to the taurus, kindy pricey at 165.00 for the kit however.
good luck and happy flying

PT19, the Primus is almost an exact duplicate of the Taurus. I have seen Jeff's kit and model fly. It flies great! The kit is all precision laser cut and incorporates some minor modifications to make it easier to build but as far as I can tell it is the exact outline and wingfoil.
For $165 I think it is a bargain! Have you checked out what an original kit goes for on E-Bay? Around $300.00+ and you get that wonderful die= crushed, dried out balsa wood. Check out Jeff's Taurus (Primus). You want be disappointed.

Try Lance [email protected] he was listing short kits with laser cut ribs, formers and parts on the SPA message boards.
If they are true to the original He might be able to help you out with set of plans, ribs, etc
If this has been mentioned already please excuse me for not reading the whole 5 pages
Good Luck'

RE: Top Flite Taurus
If everything goes as I plan I will be test flying my Taurus tomorrow. Bought it three quarters built at a swap last year. The best part is that it will be powered by a brand new (in the box for almost thirty years) K&B Veco .61 with a Perry carb.

RE: Top Flite Taurus
Did get to test fly my Taurus today, three flights. Just as good as it was thirty years ago. this one was built from a Top Flite kit. I hope to ge to work on the kit I got from Joe Grasso soon. If you haven't seen one of his kits, all I can say is that they are a work of art.

I second that---Joe Grasso's kits are a work of art, fun to build and well worth the price.

RE: Top Flite Taurus
also,
if you are willing to sell copies of the plans let me know.
as u can see, i've done some mods to this plane. i bought it at an estate sale for $ 25.00 and it needed some recovering work.
once again thanks for the help.

I am so far from you and the original plans not show the spare ribs. Take a look at:

RE: Top Flite Taurus
Does anyone out there know the last year that Top Flite produced the Taurus kit? I'm trying to figure out how old the one I'm currently flying might be. Bought it at a swap meet last year finally got it finished a couple of weeks ago.

Yes. Here's Jeff Petroski's web site. He slightly re-engineered it and calls it the Primus, but it is a Taurus:

Here's a build thread of the kit:

RE: Top Flite Taurus
Thanks for the information, Guys. I'll check into both sources. I appreciate the information very much.
By the way, what ever happened to Ed Kazmirski? I was away from the hobby for several years. I was surprised by who was still there, and who had 'left' (Ed Kazmirski, Dr. Ralph Brook, Peter G. F. Chinn, Ken Williard, etc.). Can anyone fill in the blanks, especially on Ed?
And, Rainedav, I like your 'avatar'. Wasn't that from "Highway 66", or was it from "Bringing It All Back Home"?
Thanks again,
Bob
