Good paint available, anyone?
I am building two Fly Baby for .46-.61 size from RCM plans. My question is about good fuel proof paint in the market. Epoxi, enamels, acrylics, rust oleum, which one is the best for all balsa frame, with silk & dope covering? Thanks!

KlassKote is headquartered here in Minneapolis. The owner came to our club meeting a few months ago and explained the system and taught us a lot about paint. He is a really great guy who would be happy to answer any questions you have. He can match any colors you want in a few days.
I personally don't do much painting, but some of our club members have used the product and swear by it.

Real silk and dope? Go with dope. I still like it for fabric covering. The problems are the modern hobby shop is not going to have it, and the smell. You will have to order it most likely.

Thanks TFF. In fact, it is not silk, but polyester (nylon) very light fabric. It's cheaper and sells right here at Wal-Mart. I will use a glow engine and I know dope paint are not glow fuel proof. I used in the past (30 years ago) some syntectic and acrylic paint (enamels) which worked pretty well, but I couldn't find them these days. I found lots of water based paint which could work also. Any that you recommend? Thanks

Most people are using water based polyurethane as clear coat, over anything (dope, acrylic latex, etc). That's what I found with my research yesterday. It can be airbrushed, brushed, rolled, no toxic fumes or smell, and its easy for cleaning since it is water based. The clear coat (Varathane) can be found at Lowe's. Life must be simple! Thanks folks!

I have used Klass Kote, love it. Very good coverage, fool proof application.
I am curious about trying water based too! I believe you are limited to the % of nitro though!

Found also, most water based need the clear coat to be hot fuel proof. Varathane (Lowe's) seems to be fuel proof as clear coat. Car wax should be used for UV protection time to time. Found at Nelson Hobby [link]http://www.nelsonhobby.com[/link] a very good source for paint stuff.
