Holy Smoke kit on the way ??RUDDER??
Hi
I just bought a Top Flight Holy Smoke kit on the fleabay. I have a restored OS FSR abc 40 for it.
Has anyone put a functional rudder on this bird? I am aware it can be a little squirrelly in High G manouvers ( acts like the radio is not working) but I thought a delta in a flat spin might be fun (or suicidal)[sm=71_71.gif] ....so I am asking!

I have a steerable nose wheel on mine but no rudder. There is very little side area aside from the fin. Cross winds have relatively little impact. I would be surprised if you could get into a flat spin unless you had aft CG but a rudder might do the trick. The fin is just sheet balsa so a rudder wouldn't be difficult to do. One change I am very happy with is changing to elevons with a servo mounted out in the wing with computer mixing. I split the elevator in the middle and glued the ailerons to either end. I have high rates on my radio but don't use them much except for high speed rolls. It will develop a pretty exceptional roll rate at speed. Landing are best on low rates. It will carry a l9ot of pitch on high rates and slow down pretty well but it gets hoppity- skippity if you try to bring it in nose high on pavement. The wing is really pretty fat and it will land much better in a flat attitude. I have done a lot of bank and yank flying with mine and have not had any squirreliness. Mine is balanced exactly as shown on the plans. It is a relatively easy build and has good "Ooh Aah" factor since many younger fliers have never seen one.

I am pretty sure the airplane that I had in this post is a holy smoke and yes it did have a rudder. The plane is awesome flier and extremely fast.
I did not build it I acquired it in a trade. I met the builder at a funfly in St. George Utah The year before it's demise. Maybe he can chime in and give you some
hints.
That thing did the most awesome flat spins and could always recover in about fifty feet.

After reading other threads I am not sure what mine was but it does not fit the description of the holy smoke.
So if you know what mine is please tell me.

I got mine on Ebay and I won't say for how much. You can aquire plans for this plane easily enough and it would be a simple enough scratch build. I think I will do a rudder, if it doesn't work I can always just not use it. I will draw up templates for parts as I build so I an scratch another if need be.

Here is a picture of my Holy Smoke. Since the kit is no longer in production and Topflite doesn't sell the plans I don't feel bad saying that I have a PDF of the plans that I will share if any one needs the[img][/img]m. I think the manual is available as a download from Topflite. BTW the plans have templates for the ribs. The guy who gave me the plans traced them when he scanned the plans.

If you still have plans for the Holy Smoke, could you tell me where the C/G is. I just dug mine out of the attic and do not know where to balance it. I last flew it 24 years ago. Thanks. Art g

I don't have my HS here at the moment and my memory may be rusty but if you build according to the plan, the CG is where the front of the fin meets the fuselage top.
Somebody can correct me if that is not the case.

I can't find my PDF of the plans but I took a look at the tile print that I still have on hand. The center of gravity is 14.25 inches ahead of the trailing edge.

Trailing edge of the wing or of the control surface?

One option given that the plans are lacking is to use the longest rib and the wing tip measurements to calculate the mean wing chord and use that as a starting point for setting the CG.
Here is a picture showing where mine balances. I reinforced the sheeting and put a 4-40 screw in at the CG to hang it from.
