Hi all. New here, but not new to RC. I built a couple of scorpion IV's back in the 1980's. With a Fox.45BB engine, the thrust weight was darn near 1:1. Easy to assemble, strong, light. I would build another one from the plans I saved, but reproducing all the tapered wing ribs would be a hassle.

The specs off the plans, copyright 1980 by Mark Smith:
Span 58"
Area 719 in^2
Length 45"
Engine .30 to .40
Weight 4.75#

Cheers!

That is a incredible list of designs. I had forgot or wasn't aware of most of the motorized designs.
I received a couple of Windfree kits from Hobby Hangar. I must they are very nice laser cut kits, and reasonably priced.
I am just about to start a modded Windfree kit.

I have the Mark's models S2 quick build Pitts with the solid balsa "jedelsy" wings, NIB. I also have the Mini Bird of Time styled Thermic 72 tow line glider, NIB.

As an aside have my Fox 35, K&B 29, Cameron 19, etc from the good old fifties. I have a Kenhi Buzzard, built but never (successfully) flown, that I will fly this summer. I just acquired a pristine silk and dope Mambo, pictures to follow.

Default RE: Mark's Models 'History' and Welcome Mark

This brings back many memories. I remember flying with Mark and his dad Rod when I attended contests at the Harbor Soaring Society.(Almost 40 years ago, yike!) I started flying gliders in 1971, and the first model I built was a Windward. I still have a picture of that glider hooked to a stretched hi-start being launched by holding the glider on the ground, by the tail, and releasing. If that seems silly, it was. That practice didn't last long. I went on to build a Windfree, actually, 2 or 3 of them and to this day it is still one of my favorites.

Mark's father was a really good guy too. One story I recall about Rod. I was building my first Windfree and one wing panel warped bad. While at a contest I happened to tell Rod what happened. Clearly, it was my fault, I didn't have much building experience. He asked for my address and sent me a complete wing kit, free. I didn't ask for a replacement. That was just the way Rod and Mark were.

When I think of Mark, I picture him as a young man holding a transmitter, wearing a white visor, ready to help anybody who would ask.

Mark, I will keep you in my prayers......get well.

My first solo in R/C was with a Windward at Torrey Pines with the assistance of Kelly Pike, Ken (Forgot the last name - Hasagawa?), and Mark himself. Shortly thereafter I lost it, due I believe, to it being on 27 mHz. (MRC 3 channel, alkaline's all around) Great memories.

AMA Pond collection has it. I'd like to get those plans too. Should be a nice project and easy to scratch build.

I still have an original Thermic 72 tow line glider from 1953 unbuilt and with the plans in the box. The box itself is in poor shape, but the rest is in good shape. I don't know when or if I will ever build it. Anyone interested in it?

Sincerely, Richard

You might be interested to look at this site. They sell many similar list and arfs.

http://www.rcsoaring.com/manuf.shtml

Specifically, Skybench which has modernized versions of the BOT line in different sizes which they call the Big Bird.

Good luck and good lift.

Sad to report that Mark lost his battle with prostate cancer in November of 2011, so the few postings we got here from Mark about his life in the model business are greatly treasured. Rest in peace, Mark.

When I was first learning at Torrey Pines back in the seventies, Mark, only a few years older than me, was one of the several people who helped me get started. The guy was a true class act.

When we purchased Jemco I flew the mustang and wanted to change some of the flying characteristics and structure. So the fun scale kits with the photo type lable were the new designs. My favorite models were the 60 size mustang and the 80 in Spitfire the were great to fly.

Again thanks to all this is fun.
Mark
Been a while since I checked on this thread, very sad to hear that Mark has passed on. I flew the maiden on another Mark's Models P-51 .60 size today. I built 4 of the Jemco .40 size P-51 and recently finished 2 of the .60 size. I converted them to P-51B's and power both with O.S. 55AX's. I also added electric retracts and aluminum shock struts.

Thanks to Mark for a great flying plane.
