1962 Hustler Delta views
 

I am ready to build this from plans. The plans show side and top views. Does anyone have any closeup views of the engine and tank
compartment.

Hi, I assume you mean the Hustler delta designed by Weldon Smith and Bob Baldwin subsequently kitted by Midwest. I had one of these back around 1967/68, it was powered by a Super Tigre 56 and controlled by F&M Digital 5 radio. I used it with some success in open pylon racing. Sadly the model is long gone and I never took any photos however I do have a copy of the MAN R/C Digest for 1963 which has an article about the delta by the designers. There are no close ups of the engine bay in the article but there is a nice exploded view of the model which I have attached. If you want a copy of the article I can scan it for you.

Thanks,this helps a lot. i think i have a copy of the article that talks about the
models they tried before getting to the hustler.This view may have been in the article. I have been flying a 30 "size hustler with a small outrunner-a lot of fun.

Got started on the Hustler ( 45 " span). Had to glue 2 hollow cores doors together to get a large enough building board. Also included photo
of smaller 30" span Hustler I have been flying-if I can download photos.

That really brings back memories of my Hustler delta from the late 1960's. I had a lot of fun with that model although I did have a few scares when I lost orientation at distance. Model is long gone but I still have a trophy I won with it pylon racing.

Progressed to sheeting and capstripping the top. Hard to believe a model of this size was originally powered by a Veco 19 ???

Original must have been quite slow, as I mentioned earlier my Midwest kit Hustler was powered by a Super Tigre 56. Although fast, it was not grossly over powered.

Finally got started applying micafilm covering ( now discontinued ). Unable to get Balsarite for fabrics from LHS to adhere covering to
balsa. By trial and error I found an adhesive that worked. Got Beacon Fabri-tac that worked well-thinned it with some acetone.
Back on schedule to fly Hustler at Kentucky Bluegrass event.

Back in the early pylon racing days, before the modern events, engine size was tied to wing area. Events were run that way from the late '50's to early 60's. In 1958 or so, the winning speed was an average of about 30 mph. Towards the end, about 75 mph. This was a period where radios went from a regerative design (no crystal) to superhet, so racing was against the clock.

Hi Folks,

I don't want to hijack the forum, but I do have a New-In-the-Box Midwest Hustler XD-7 Kit, complete with ZIPPERS for the Radio Compartment. I also have a copy of the original construction article that appeared in Model Airplane News magazine - March 1962.

I'm loosing my eyesight due to Macular Degeneration, everything I fly now is big and slow or just slow and close.

I was thinking about listing the HUSTLER XD-7 Kit on feebay, any interest from RCU modelers ? I don't know what it's worth now, I have had the kit for almost 40 years. Any Offers?

Hi Ken, Do you still have the Hustler kit? I may be interested.
Last evening was our club membership meeting. During the meeting I picked up the blue prints and a building frame for the plane from a club member. Last week another club member was at our field flying one of the Hustlers (at a very high rate of speed!!) and I was impressed. As I asked around I was pointed to the club member I first mentioned.
I hope to start building it this fall, after our 52nd anual Flying Circus, here in Cincinnati, Ohio. This will be my third scratch biuld.

Yes, I still have the kit. I purchased the it from the Reginald Denny Hobby Shop in Hollywood, California in 1965. Wow, almost 50 years ago.

My son wanted me to keep the kit so he can sell copies of the plans and the construction article.

In a few weeks, I think I'll put this very Vintage Kit up for sale on eBay. Should be able to get at least $100.00 for it.

Thanks for responding to my question. Sorry about your son wanting to keep the kit, but, first: Do you think the old bulsa is still strong enough to be built and fly safely? And, secondly, I might be interested in purchasing the kit. Would you be willing to let me buy the kit and ship it to me for $100?

I live in Cincinnati, Ohio. I don't know how much the shipping would be, but I guess we could work out something.

Recall that Zel Ritchie won an early 1960s pylon racing event using a Delta with a Space Control. Howard Bonner was a big promoter of pylon racing in it's infancy and can be seen at many events wearing his pith helmet.

Hi Mike,

I've been in and out of doctor's offices all this past week. I received Hypo shots in both eyes this past week, in an attempt to slow down Macular Degeneration. 30 times in each eye so far, been going on for the last 5 years. Now, I'm told I have Skin Cancer in several places. This week the skin cancer specialist will start cutting out what they can.

I'll get back to you about the Hustler Kit when I can.

Ken, I understand. I really do. I am a nurse and have been for 27 years. These last 10 years I've been a Geriatric Care Manager with my own company. It's been my job to help look after and help guide families through the "tropical forest of healthcare"...as sick as healthcare is today we need all the help we can get.

Please don't worry about me. Take your time in whatever you decide. I'll not die without the kit. Infact a fellow club member (Tom Scott) lent to me a 40 inch building board and a set of blue prints for the same aircraft. The blue prints are old and fragile so I went to Staples last Thursday and had them coppied. They turned out pretty good. I've build from scratch before (a Lanier Shrike) and can do it again.

Just take care of yourself - and remember, all the healthcare people and the doctors are your employees!! If you don't understand something, make them explain it...it's thier job.

Get back to me if you can. If not - stay close to prayer.

Greetings from the very hot 'Valley of da Sun'.

I too have a couple of Hustler XD 7 kits by Midwest, and needed a set of plans badly, and found a seller on eBay selling all kinds of old kit and mag plans including the Hustler. They are on pdf files and can be downloaded on your PC and then emailed to a print shop for copying. I purchased several dozen of his plans last month and they are great, and inexpensive. I see he still has the Hustler available, so check him out, eBay # 200774179560. This is a great way to keep those old designs alive, as original plans are hard come by and usually guite brittle and delicate.

Our auction person is just downloading other peoples work and selling the downloads.

Update on Hustler Delta . Got 2 successful flights at the Muncie In. Vintage RC Society event on Mon. Sept. 17, 2012. Had too much up elevator trim on first flight,but able to land safely. 2nd flight was more
stable-needs more aileron deflection-rolls look like barrel roll. Sorry,did not get a video.
