Not kit cutters.. Peter Barth. He makes 1/3 and 1/4 scale kits..
Vogelsang sells them in the USA.

Now that I am happy with the oleo struts working satisfactorily have purchased new fairings from Peter Barth and will get it all working with the sliders in place, will tidy it all up as per the full scale!

Waco Brotherhood

Hi Waco's
I am flying the Great Planes Waco, what a joy
1) How does one become a member of the brotherhood
2) planning to build a 1/3 scale, Moki and all. Which one? AMR? Barth? others? where do I get write ups?
3) Is there any frame for sale out there?
Best
George

Picked up a Great Planes Waco at the Toledo Show a couple weeks ago and today fired up the recently rebuilt OS Gemini 160 twin intended for it on the test stand. Fits within the cowl so should be a good match.

A few other projects to get through first, one being installing a Futaba 430 gyro on the rudder of the Pica 1/5. Last year at an event tried to launch from pavement with a crosswind and it went all over the runway. Along with being embarrassing had to abort for safety.

The roll rate was excellent but I had to mix aileron into the rudder as the differential was not sufficient even with only 30% rate down. My left thumb is too lazy to always coordinate the rudder. The first day was flying on an 18-6 prop which is way to small for my power setup. I propped up to a 20-8 and there was still more left in the motor (1.8kw on the ground). The 20 inch prop looks too big so I settled for an 18-8 with a wider blade profile. I am pulling almost 1400 watts on the ground and can do 400 foot diameter loops from level flight. It flew equally well from asphalt or grass. I considered the Pica kit a bucket list kit to build but was a little disappointed in how much engineering was required to assemble everything. The finished result was well worth the work and I have received many comments about how good it looks.

What did you use for the white trim? Are they painted on or did you cut some decals for it? Looks great!

Waco sre

Hi all,

I know it's officially off-topic being an SRE, but here are some pictures of my 1/6th scale model flying at the F4C competition yesterday :)

Looks great!

chuck l 05-07-2018 11:12 AM

Looks nice. Did you build that from a kit or from plans? I'd be interested in building one.

Chuck

Build of SRE

Thanks 😊
I built it from plans but made alterations based on 3-views and photographs. Check my thread here. I have plenty more pictures on my PC if you have any questions.

Great looking SRE bet she's a sweet flyer. I also see your sporting your Waco shirt.

FMBB 05-08-2018 12:57 AM

Nice looking aircraft how did you place in the F4C competion?

kvlasblom 05-08-2018 02:42 AM

Sre

Thank you for the compliments. Yes, the shirt and cap are worn with pride :)
She does fly well, but due to her weight flies a little faster than I'm used to, and needs some speed when comping in for a landing. She's my first bipe (or sesquiplane ;-) ) too so we need to get to know each other.
There were only 7 competitors (the last few years have seen a decrease in scale competitors in The Netherlands unfortunately) and my goal was simply to get to take her home in one piece. I was therefore rather pleasantly surprised with a third place for the flying part and fourth for static.

FMBB 05-08-2018 03:15 AM

Congrats third place is good. I know it is always a compromise between risking more a bit more difficult aerobatics) to get a better multiplicator for a higher score or to fly some figures less dangerous to get her home in one piece. So enjoy and do some more exercise to get her to know. Is Jan Hermes still joining the scale competions?

F4c

He's still active yes, having picked up the competitions again recently after a break. He flies a YMF too!

FMBB 05-09-2018 12:50 AM

So if he is flying a Waco YMF ask him to join the brotherhood. If you may meet him give him my regards.

I finally started my 1/5th scale Waco kit. I am missing ribs 3,4,18, and 19. what would be a good way to get the templates to cut my own? also any hints on how to navigate the thread? I tried to copy and paste the links on the first page but am not getting any results. And of course I would like to become a member of the brotherhood. thanks for any help. Gary

Welcome to the thread. I'm not sure of the status of the links on the first page. When the site was changed, the links didn't follow. I thought someone was working on a fix, but I don't recall that status.

You should soon see a post from mrdhud adding you to the Brotherhood. He also hosts a wealth of information, including wing templates, that you'll want to check out. The build manual has been revised with many of the modifications discussed in this thread over the years. You can find the info here: Wix.com clasicair created by mrdhud based on blank-website Wix.com

Keep us posted on your build. It's always fun to see a new Waco take shape!
