MX 400 / Phoenix 35A ESC / ???
I'm putting a new controller (Castle Creations Phoenix 35A) in my MX 400 and decided to get some recommendations for motor/pinion combos as well. I'm a new heli pilot so I don't need something super powerful that is a battery hog, but I also don't want something that is real gutless. I need a middle of the road motor.
Can someone recommend a motor/pinion combo that will work for me?
Thanks.

I've got an MX450 that I converted to an MX400, anyhow, I'm running the recommended motor for the 450 still in it, it seems to me taht I'm getting some killer run times on this setup. It's all the stock recommendations, I'll time it tonight if I get a chance and let you know what I'm getting for times...

The GP Ammo 28-45-2700 that's recommended for the 450XS should work pretty well. Another excellent motor in this size is the JustGoFly 450TH, and people have also had good success with the Align 430L (NOT the 430XL).

JDOUG....
Do you belong to the R/C club there in Nampa?
Do any of the guys fly heli's. I've heard they do
so maybe one of them could give you a hand.
My son and I fly heli's. He has a MX450 and I
have a MX400 Pro. We live in Emmett.
The motors suggested in the above posts should
work just fine. In my 400 I run the stock 6 pole
motor. I have the timing set to high and it's very
powerful.
We get about 9 to 10 minutes on a charge. We
use 2100mah Lipo's.
Just my .02 cents worth.
Happy Hovering,
Bob

AirmanBob - No I don't. I have rarely seen any helis out there, but the only time I see the club is when I go golfing next door at Ridgecrest. I never gone out to see them fly.
osterizer - The Ammo is a 2700Kv? What pinion should I go with using this one?

use a conversion table to figure out what you want. the head speed and the type of blades you are using
head speed of 1800 rpm for wood blades
up to 3000rpm for carbon fiber blades
I am using carbon fiber at 2300rpm
you have a stock gear on the head, 138t and a 10 t pinion with a 20,000 rpm (kv) motor = a 1449 head speed.
138/10=13.8 the pinon has to turn 13.8 times to spinn the head once. motor rpm of 20000/13.8=1449
a 12t will give you 1739rpm head speed on so on
be sure and set the speed control to run 90% if you want a slower head speed re gear it, do not reduce the % on your throttle curve

NOT on a plastic head MX. 2300-2400 is as high as you want to go if you don't at least put in the aluminum hub and grips.
