I am pleased to report that the all metal geared 3 speed is amazing. I ran her for an hour and a half with no issues at all. Check out my other new post about the power she put down.

These are the gears you need to do this.
HPI 86084- 32t drive gear
HPI 86098- 29t Idler gear
44t Steel 1st gear for the 3spd- http://www.ebay.com/itm/HPI-SAVAGE-2...item231462a013
HPI 77065- Optional HS 3rd gear set
HPI 86081- Gear shaft for Idler gear ** This is the same shaft that is used in the 3spd. So just take the gear off an replace it.**

This is everything you need to complete this mod, other than some washers and a dremel. Any other questions just ask.

So i have an UPDATE for this mod. Go to the link and check out the pics i have. After 2 gallons thru it, well actually almost 3 as i write this. It shows almost no wear and looks like it did when i first installed it. The black stuff on my fingers is dirt and grime and a little grease from the bearings, the tranny is dry.

Best mod hands down for the Savage!!!

I just did this mod and before I did the.mod I asked myself why did hpi put in such small gears in the first place but then after I got into the tranny when you flip over the shaft with the lower drive gear it will not allow the truck to have reverse upgrade installed if anyone plans on adding reverse this mod to me will not allow it.
I myself would give up reverse for this upgrade but does anyone with this mod are able to still get reverse in??

Well like you said when you flip over the idler shaft there is no room for the reverse. Personnally i wouldnt bother with the reverse stuff, there junk and break. Trust me you will be thrilled with the new mod assumin you shimmed your tranny correctly!

I do like the mod, its a very good idea if anyone is looking to put more power into there trucks. As far as the shimming and reason behind it is veg, it needs a little more detail for the reader.
Its hard to understand where someone is saying (as long as you trim the trany correctly) and for the reader to apply the shimming and where and why to me is important.

I feel its important to say the purpose to shim is to keep the gears aligned inside the tranny, so if you hit hard on one side of the car the gears dont shift and smack into the edges of the each set of gears upper and lower and crack the teeth.

So if you do this mod check to see as you put the gears back in that the shifting or movement of the gears are not to extreme and shim just enough on the middle set of gears.

If anyone would like to chime in and define more please do so.

I made sure my lower drive gear (the one that is all by itself on the lower drive shaft) didnt have any movement or shifting side to side
Then the 1st2nd3rd gear set in the middle with bearings on each side did have quite a bit of shifting in it from side to side so I took about half of the play out and made sure that they didnt shift to any extreme that it would not hit edges of gears on the upper spur gear set of gears.

I trully hope everyone is understanding where Im coming from and I hope this helps everyone the meaning behind shimming the tranny correctly.

There are only 2 shims that need to be added. There are pictures showing where the 2 shims go. From that sounds of it, you understood it correctly. Your also correct when saying that you dont what your middle set of gears sloppin around. That is how you mangle your gears.

Lots of people have read this thread and the original creators thread with great results.

Like i mentioned earlier in this thread, the original thread was hard to read thus why i created this one. I take the constructive critizism to heart and will try to further explain the shimming process. This is what makes these forums awesome. People providing helpfull imput. Thank you!

Well I will have to say I did put my xl threw the ringer today, I put the temp on motor around 280 to 290 all day long put about 3/4 gal in and still had great smoke, (THANKS MAGNUM FUELS)
for making such a great fuel that words just cant express.
All day she ran like a champ, the Ofna 086 muffler, running the temps I was running made just a perfect day, for the first time I saw a savage increase speed climbing the sand pit hit we play in that will make you cry if you half to climb in person, its a hill you dont want to roll the truck on, it helps when you bring extra cash with ya and pay the 12 year old to climb the hill and turn over my truck,,,,.

Anyway the 5.9 for sure comes alive at 280 in temp, just a moster, cant wait to see what the new picco .28 will do once I upgrade to that engine.

Now as for the gear upgrade, I put it on the counter pulled off the upper sper gear assm looked inside and to my suprise she looked like she did just after I did the mod, inspected the gears real carefully and not one nick, spur, noting.

I did notice while playing around the if felt a little faster, I wonder if the gears had anything to do with it or the ofna 086 muffler combined with the mangum fuel.
Really dont care, its a great mod so far and it feels great to be able to tighten up the clutch and know the gears can take the punishment.

Well I didnt have luck with the HS gear but after I went full metal, I havent looked back. Both my trannys have numorus gallons thru them now and they look brand new. The top end you get from the HS gear set is slightly noticable so YES go with it.

Dont forget to shim everything! I only used two shims and its ok if you have to file a shim down.

I wish Savage Central or somehwere sold the 44t Steel gear for this conversion along with all the other parts needed.

I hate ordering parts from many different suppliers!

Shipping is a killer for me based in the middle east.

What do you guys need. I know people that have cnc machines and 3D printers and can make these parts. Let me know what y'all want and I can check if they can do it.
