Hi all,
I'm wondering if I buy the conversion kit (HPI Savage XL Chassis Conversion Set Part# 100413), would I have to buy the 5.9cc engine or could I use my 4.6cc
Also do I need to buy the 3-speed gear box or can I still use the 2-speed?

You can use the two speed and the 4.6. I have them with two speeds, Picco 28s, Picco 27, Picco 26, Lrp Spec 3, 5,9s and a 4.6 in them.

Length is fairly cheap, I have done that for as little as 20 bucks, width is pretty expensive, but worth it. You will love the way it sails! Bud

HPI sells a XL chassis kit. Comes with the chassis plates, engine plate and rear driveshaft. www.hpiracing.com for the part number.

Do correct me if I'm wrong veterans, but I think the width conversion is quite involved.

You'll need the XL extended axles, which uses a cup different to the standard one, so you'll need new dogbones. This in turn requires new out-drive cups from the differential.

For some reason the XL has 2 washer shims on the differential bearing, compared to 1 on the 4.6 X. Though this may change depending on how you like your ring and pinion to mesh.

I think you can buy full XL diff + gearbox + bulkhead assemblies from ebay, so that should make things slightly simpler.

All that, or you could just get some offset wheels . I think 1/2 inch is the most popular offset.

The length conversion is rather cheap since the chassis plates and extended rear dog-bone can be had for dirt cheap on ebay, BUT width will cost more since you need the differential out-drives (which you can not buy individually off ebay from what I've seen)-about $45+shipping, thicker dog-bones-about $8+shipping, extended axles with spacers-about $20+shipping.

As for the sailing part, I'm pretty sure he means that it will handle MUCH better than the X4.6

so i can do the length without doing the width,but its just better with both right. i have the 4.6 rtr and it sure could use a lil more stability.

would i loose any power at all.

Yes you can do just the length or width and add the other one later...I contemplated on doing that to my X4.6, but then decided on just building a XL

I'm sorry to say this but my 5.9 motor has been nothing but problems. I recently had it replaced because their was a hole under the motor after only 10 tanks. Thank god, HPI replaced my motor. [] The people at the hobby shop told me that a lot of people have been having this problem. "Engine has to much torque."

A cheap way to do the width is to get 'stablemaxx' or 'offset' wheels. RPM makes them; then you don't need all the other stuff. Offset wheels on a std. X is the exact same width as the XL with non-offest wheels.

You will soon learn that the too much torque story is far from true. The 5.9 is definitely not a power house.

That will get you very close on width and they look sweet too! The XL setup has considerably tougher axles and bones.

Mmms, converting the X 4.6 SS into a XL 4.6SS looks like I need the following:

Everything else on the XL parts list, outside of the tires, seems to match up with the parts list for the X 4.6 SS.

Or am I missing something?

That would do it! That would also be cheaper in the long run than the route I took, I guess I can take some satisfaction in knowing I got to run several gallons through various conversions before the kit was avaiable. You can beat the length conversion price by buying parts on Ebay. Bud

Why not beat both of those prices that HPI has and buy everything off ebay? May as well just buy the XL differentials to have as spares and just use the out-drives if you'd like.

Well yeah, I wouldn't buy direct from HPI... but at the same time I've always been skeptical of WorstBay.

Sorry to bring a dead thread back to life but im considering getting a conversion kit however, im a bit confused about the Engine mounting plate. is it needed if im not going to get the 5.9? for instance, if i decide not to get the 5.9, can i just get the Extended TVPs and the Dogbones? ALSO:: will these give the x the same width as the xl?

Engine mounting plate isn't needed at all, but suggested.
To get XL width, get XL axles and the HPI purple spacers... you will need the larger XL dogbones and diff outdrives to fit the beefier XL axles.
Length is XL TVP's and rear driveshaft.
