Running Savage on 10% nitro fuel...
I am waiting for my first Savage but I have a little problem. I cannot find in Romania a source for fuel with more than 10% nitro.
Can I use this fuel for the Savage or I must find a way to import 20% nitro fuel?

Big blocks typically don't run well on 10% and you'll end up having a really tough time tuning your engine to perform. Can you order from the U.K. or Germany? If you could find an online store near to you (meaning, not overseas) It would be worth it to order it simply for the longer engine life and better tuning/performance.

Yeah, don't waste your time or money trying to run it with 10%. You need at least 20% nitro with 16% lubricant to run reliably just bashing. If you're gonna race you gotta up the nitro and down the lube%'s. If you can't get the right stuff, you can always play wit it like dey do in da ghetto. Just stand behind it and gently poosh it around the yard with your foot. It's amazing how long an engine and chassis can last in this fashion. Git r done, boy! Later.

ORIGINAL: Flyinhi1
with 16% lubricant ....
with 16% lubricant ....
ALL I EVER RUN is race fuel.... carrying 10-12% lub. and I'm pulling engines at 3-4 gallons that still have lots of compression...

You are advised to add a head shim or at LEAST change heat range on your plugs if you go over 25% to prevent damage from detonation/pre-ignition...

what are you using? should i get the os R5, its the coldest they got?
what is better: 20% N, medium cold plug, no shim
or 30% N, cold plug, two shims?

You can run it at 10% if that is all that you have. Don't let lack of fuel availability stop you from having fun. Your Savage won't be as fast as one running on 20%, but who cars, you'll be at least running it and having fun. Go ahead and have fun and run it at 10%.

If you add a shim, try running your stock plug... If you are gonna just run the fuel without the shim (not the better of ideas) run a colder plug...

SP:
With a higher percentage of nitro the fuel starts burning sooner if the engine is not changed. Adding a head shim, which is nothing but a thicker head gasket, slows the fuel burn point and helps prevent engine damage. On the other hand, if you go to lower nitro percentage a thinner shim is used.
Bill.

it will be very tough to tune, i ran in my original motor with 5% nitro it was a right pain in the ass, then tuned it with 25% ,t it ran sweet.

Down here any Nitro is haaaaaard to come by... ... Your lucky u can find 10%
I run my savage 25 on a 75/15 methanol & castor oil ... with a dash of acetone for idle (3% of methanol volume)... and a medium hot plug (OS #8).
It starts promptly & runs great... I have raced it against a savage running on 20% nitro... not the maaajor difference I thought it'd be... acceleration is more vivacious I admit... but end speed is very ...very comparable.
Operating temp is in the 240 - 250 F range.
By the way I've been running a Deep Vee boat with a .90 inboard watercooled for years now... compression is still in ip top shape.

You can run your engine with 0% nitro... all it means is harder to start when the engine is cold and lack of power, no wheelies for you. What you can't do is run the engine with less than 18% oil, it will over heat and slowly will loose compression.
