if it is way to lean you wil hear it popping & surging at speed. If it is to rich it will accelerate slowly & have alot of smoke coming out of the exhaust..once you get a temp gauge make sure to keep it under 300 degrees & you will be fine..

I was new to the savage at xmas at i must say that i cudnt of managed without the temp gun for tuning. After break in, lean the hsn 1/8 of a turn at a time until the temp reaches about 270 f then start to tune the lsn. Watch the temps and if they go over 300 f then richen up the hsn to comensate for the leaning of the lsn

look, all you need to do is tune it as lean as you can, without losing performance. when you start to lose performance back up a step. then tune the low speed until when you pull the throttle from a dead standstill and it takes right off with a steady stream of smoke. I have used this mezathod for 4 years, i know a temp gun could help you but i dont have one and my trucks run fine.

Temp guns can range in price depending on what your looking for. Following is a link to tower hobbies, I have this temp gun and it works fine.

look a temp gun helps, but will get you no where near your ideal settings.
