RE: steering servo
The Hitec is metal geared. I use one in mine along with the cam type servo saver upgrade(included in the new ones) and the ball bearings. Sitting still on medium length carpet my setup has more than enough power to turn the wheels. The servo cost me about 45 dollars from hobbyhaven and I can get 6v 1100mah hump packs that work excellent for about 6 bucks apiece.

RE: steering servo
i had the hitec hs-5645 and it had more then enough power infact i had to adjust my end point so i don't over steer and flip. Since i sold my SS 4.6 i now use the servo for my FG throttle and brake.
