Are the big rims and tires worth it?
Hi,
What are the benefits of upgrading to a 40 series rim and tire? I kinda like the big joes and the outback rim look but everybody is doing it. Do I need an adaptor for 4o series rims and tires? What are the benefits? what are the drawbacks?
Thanks again...

RE: Are the big rims and tires worth it?
Ntloser, I will give you another opinion. I have Big Joes on 40s on a Savage SS, and although I like them and they deifnately look cool, they are harder on the drivetrain than the stock setup. The stock rims/tires sre desingned to be more efficient with the originsl Savage setup. I had to gear down to 13/49 to have the pickup similar to stock, was running 16/52 steel gears with stock setup. The low gears and Big Joe's destroyed my aluminum clutch in two days. The only benefit I liked was jump control because of the weight. I am no longer running these, I like the stock setup so much better, you just have to learn ghow to throttle when you're in the air.
As a mater of fact, wanna buy mine? half price or less - tennesseeREMOVEfanATrepairmandotREMOVEcom - post back if you cant figure out that address

Hi,
I would have bought yours except I purchased the joes and cheyennes almost a month ago. I definitely lost some wheelie ability and had to put in a 49 tooth spur to make up for the extra weight and diameter.

The Big Joes looks great , but they are heavy .
I want both Big Joes and power so I ordered the Sirio .30 and the 3 speed.
Although the K4.6 is doing a good job with the Big Joes , but I need more power.

RE: Are the big rims and tires worth it?
The benefits to the 40 series are: less tire roll, wider (I.e. more stable) contact patch, less ballooning and better looks. The weight difference is small when comparing the big joes to the Savage 25 series stock tires. The weight difference between the 4.6ss dirt bones and the big joes is much greater. The dirt bones can be compared to the proline bowties and offer great traction, but seem to wear more quickly than other designs. The smaller diameter and lighter weight will give you more wheelies (As you noted).
As far as toasting an aluminum clutch in 2 days with the big joes, um, that must have been an OFNA clutch.
There really aren't any drawbacks other than regearing (For the larger diameter) and the cost.
NT, if you don't like the performance, try something different. Expect to change gearing with any different size tire.
Hey Pigs, you wanna sell them? I emailed ya.

Depends how you drive. I actually went smaller. I put on the traxxas sportmaxx wheels and tires for a smaller diameter, lighter combination. Better low end gearin AND turning characteristics on dirt because of the tread design. Depending on where you are running, gearing makes a BIG difference. I race at the local track so I am not looking for top speed, I want to launch full blast out of a turn and clear those double jumps. That's when the Losi and Revo guys start accusing me of port and polishing my stock 25. I kept my stock wheels for bashing.

I had a set of those Ofna shoes that wore out in a few quarts (1/2gal or so) worth of fuel. I have heard that other users here have had good luck with them, but they seem soft... I run the Mugen shoes and 1.1 MM springs. The Nova shoes (with NONE of the added weights) are very nice too.

Bibo, try www.hobbyguyrc.com
He ships worldwide and can accept credit cards OR PAYPAL! Give him a try. His prices are awesome, too! Collari with Rotostart for $199!
And I bought a set of the Mugen shoes for my LST from him for $17 or so.

RE: Are the big rims and tires worth it?
I run the proline 40 series velocity 6 with 40 series bowties, and the helped the handling of the truck greatly. She almost handles like a street car now. I only use them on the track and when I'm out bashing around, I use the stock rims and tires and let me tell you there is a big weight difference. I have to gear down with the stock rims and tires because they are so heavy. No, you don't need any adapter to make them fit on the savage. For racing on a track, I recommend getting the 40 series rims and bowties.
BTW, the HPI Dirt Bonz are similar to the Proline Bowties.
