RE: what is a servo
A servo is an electric motor that is controled by the reciever and is used to convert control imput from the radio system into physical movement on the model.
Hitec is a brand of servo.
I suspect if you were talking Savages at the time then someone recomended a High Torque servo made by Hitec, probably the Hitec [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXUZ89&P=0]HS-645MG High-Torque 2BB[/link] to use on your steering.
the servo that comes stock with the savage is not very strong (lower torque) and it is a very common upgrade to replace this with the Hitec unit as this can greatly improve the handling of the savage.

RE: what is a servo
Here is how servos work:

For steering, get the Hitec 645MG servo. For brakes and throttle, any normal servo will do.
