Default 10 engine comparason, side by side

From so many new nitro guys asking the "which engine to buy" I came up with the idea of rating the 11 engines I own for the sake of passing on knowledge. I am rating each engine on a scale of 1 to 5 (5 being "AWESOME, 1 being "TERD"). I also am breaking things down into 4 catagories: Torque (Pay attention to torque rating MT Savage guys), overall power (OP), tunability (pay attention to tuneability rating NEW nitro guys), and day to day running and relibility (RR). Heres all the engines I own:

Truckzilla .46 Torque 4, O/P 1, Tuneability 1, R/R 1

Collari .30: Torque 5, O/P 4, Tuneability 3, R/R 3.5

SH .28 (#1): NR because I blew the lower rod, so R/R 1

SH .28 (#2): Torque 4, O/P 4, Tuneability 3, R/R 4

Wasp .28: Torque 3.5, O/P 2, Tuneability 2, R/R 2

Wasp .26: Torque 4, O/P 4, Tuneability 4.5, R/R 4

Picco .26: Outlaw Torque 3.75, O/P 4.5, Tuneability 2.5, R/R 2

HPI S25: Torque 3, O/P 3.5, Tuneability 4, R/R 4

Ofna Force 25 : Torque 3, O/P 3, Tuneability 5, R/R 4

XTM 24.7 Pro: Torque 4, O/P 4.5, Tuneability 5, R/R 5

Sportwerks .26: Torque 3.5, O/P 5, Tuneability 4, R/R 4.5

Keep in mind I am an amatuer tuner. An expert will yield different engine behavior. A lot of kids that own ONE engine tend to argue with me if I dump on their engine as far as performance. This guide is simply REAL backyard bashing opinions on my engines. I have the advantage of being able to compare all these engines side by side, so my info is totally unbiased. I dump on crap engines, and I praise premium engines as well. Hope this helps!

I think this is much needed in this forum. If there is any way for a moderator or administrator to "sticky" this to the top of the HPI forum I think it would help stop the same question being asked over and over.

Polar Bus, even though you claim to be an amature tuner I would consider you to be one of the more experienced of the group here. I think I speak for a lot of people by saying that your opinion is greatly respected. Thanks for the right up.

idk why your saying u like the torque on a .30 more than the .46 b/c of th displacement but i guess your right because that .46 is so hard to dial in anywayz.... ive been into this for a while so i would know that you are right, on the sh.28 and the xtm 24.7 they are both kick ass engines for those who are looking... i did the same i looked and looked and it came down to the sh28 and the 24.7 but i said f it and bought both so thats where im at

Thanks Tim,
Yes I can tune an engine no problem, always with desired results. The difference between myself, and "experts" is the speed and systematic tuning approach those guys that race have. A level racers will have an engine that was totally out to lunch tuning wise, all dialed in perfectly in about 12 laps!! It's amazing. Usually takes me at least 45 min to dial in a bogus running engine.

The TZ .46 engine is the biggest ripoff POS engine on the market. It had OK torque, but NOT nearly what I expected from a .46 engine. That engine came from a heli application, and should have stayed one.

Ok here's a short comparison of my engines but with a 1-10 points range :

O/P = Overall Power , T = Tunability

HPI S25__ O/P = 5 , T = 8
WASP .28_ O/P = 7 , T = 1
HPI K4.6__ O/P = 8 , T = 8
Sirio .30__ O/P = 8 , T = 7
O.S. .30__ O/P = 8 , T = 8
LRP SPEC2 O/P = 9 , T = 8

There is no need for a 1-10 scale. I get my point across with a 1-5 rating just fine.

You also include .5's in your scale, so 1-5 is just as accurate as 1-10! It really makes no difference...

Nice table, i'll be sure to take into consideration what you have said about those engines when i decide to upgrade the engine in my MGT.

well this person obviosly hasn't tried any of the engines and is finding it a hard to pill to swallow that a SH can and will out tune and outperform the mighty OS and the Pico.......booohooo SH makes awesoime engines, they are powerful, they last a long time, they are easy to tune, easy to start andf are affordable.............

15 year old boys? What are you? 16? I'm a 30 year old man. I DID search, and I DID find this thread before I made a post about engine selection. It's informative and I will keep it in mind when I purchase a new engine, but it's one guys opinion and I was looking for a little more detail. If you guys are so tired of seeing these posts, why not give your opinion about engines here instead of just ranting? Forgive me.

And are those the only 11 engines made or what?

Of the listed engines that I own common to Polar_Bus, I would have to say that his feedback on most are VERY close to what I have experienced myself. These engines kind of pile up on on you after awhile. If anyone was intrested I could make a list of the smallblock engines I have owned in the same fashion. I started to add an entry to this post when I first saw it, but was distracted along the way.

Note that this is not the same as PB's list, even though 6 of the engines are the same.

Collari .30: Torque 5, O/P 4.75, Tuneability 3, R/R 3.5

SH .28: Torque 4, O/P 4, Tuneability 4.75, R/R 5

Nova/Rex/Top 3port .28: Torque 4.75, O/P 5, Tuneability 3.5, R/R 3.5

Infinity/Diablo/Wasp .28: Torque 3.5, O/P 2.5, Tuneability 2, R/R 2

FantomRacing/Infinity .27: Torque 3.3, O/P 2.5, Tuneability 2.3, R/R 2.25

Wasp .26: Torque 3.75, O/P 4, Tuneability 3.5, R/R 4

Picco .26: Torque 3.75, O/P 4, Tuneability 3.5, R/R 2

Picco/WerksRacing .27: Torque 4, O/P 4.5, Tuneability 4, R/R 4

HPI S25: Torque 3, O/P 3, Tuneability 3, R/R 4

HPI .21: Torque 2.75, O/P 3, Tuneability 4.5, R/R 5

Ofna Force 25 : Torque 3, O/P 3.25, Tuneability 3.5, R/R 4

Ofna Force 26 : Torque 3.2, O/P 3.4, Tuneability 4.25, R/R 4

Ofna 21 hyper 8port : Torque 3, O/P 3.25, Tuneability 5, R/R 5

....and thanks to Polar_Bus for taking the time to write out his experience for the benefit of other readers/users.

Thanks Frost for this informative feedback , i am just surprised that you rated the S25 higher than the Wasp .28 in the power department.

My Wasp .28 was much faster than my S25 in every area , but was very hard to tune and impossible to hold a tune and overheated like crazy.

Like I said, and now (we) including Frost, the Wasp .28 is a total worthless terd of an engine. I am 100% sure if you lined up an S25, and a Wasp .28 side by side. They would be about equall, maybe even the S25 winning a race. My Wasp .28 had poor torque off the bottom, and very flat top end. The S25 was a very well rounded engine as far as good power output, especially good power for new nitro guys learning how to drive. Sorry, but your erxperiences with the Wasp .28 are a single positive claim, I hear far more claims of totally negitive feedback on the Wasp .28 in generall.
