Try any of these methods: (from best to worst)

1. Use a piston locking tool

2. Use a flywheel locking tool

3. Place the Flywheel into a table vise

4. Use a big, jaw type pliers to hold the flywheel

Choose any of the above method then use a 10 mm socket with a counter clockwise turn.

Which way does it turn when it is running. If it is clockwise turn it clockwise. It will be threaded the same way it turn so when it is spinning at high speeds it will not back off and fall off. Yes they are on there really tight. I got mine off with a wrench and a pair of vise grips to hold the flywheel. I wouldn't use a piston lock because that causes stress on the conrod and could break it.

True as we don't how tight he has the nut on there but it should not be that tight anyway. It does not take alot to lock the flywheel in the collet.

However, you do need the piston lock tool to attach the flyhweel on the motor.

Im not gonna get it off until tommarrow night now, but I will let you know how i get it off. It is not the direction or how tight it is that is the problem but the 3 pins sticking up from the flywheel make it really hard to get any pliers or wrench in there with a good grip.

Im not too worried if i break the .25, hope to never need it again

Simple really. Get a deep-well socket the right size and either a set of vice-grips or channel locks. Grab the flywheel with the grips/pliers and then take the nut off with the socket-wrench. Short, sweet, simple, safe, effective. And no, you do NOT need anything else to put the flywheel on another engine. It might be cool to have a special little tool for everything in my truck but the price of an already-owned vice-grip vs. a special tool I'd need twice a year just didn't compare. Screw the special tool and long live McGyver.

Yeah I'm a McGyver fan as well. I know very well how to work with what tools you have lying around.

IMO, the special tool is worth it for me as it makes work easier, cleaner and faster. No marring, scratches or possible damage either.

Everybody is so afraid that a piston locking tool is going to damage the piston or conrod. I just don't buy it. Both the piston and conrod are designed to handle the stress of 15,000 explosions per second and temps to 250 degrees. Proper use of a piston locking tool is not going to hurt either the piston or the conrod. Of course improper use could.
They are, however NOT needed. I have been working on nitro engnes for over 40 years and have never owned or used one on one of these engines.
A good trick to hold the crankshaft still is to take the OWB (if the engine is so equiped) and reverse it on the shaft. You can the hold the OWB while you tighten/loosen (depending on which way it's on the shaft) the flywheel nut.
The flywheel nut comes off fairly easily. I use a rag on the flywheel and channel locks to hold it. A deepwell socket does work best but an open end wrench will do th job too.

What if the OWB is internal?

then you can put the socket on the hex head of the OWB shaft

i just wrapped the flywheel with masking tape 4--5 times and then grabbed a pipe wrench which i wrapped in ductape 3-4 times
i use the wrench to hold the fly wheel while i used the 4-way glowplug wrench on the flywheel/clutch nut

I use the Ofan flywheel wrench listed above as I have some engines not in my Savage that are starter box engines and doe not have a one way bearing. I all so agree with DaveG55 about the piston lock. I have one and use it on rare occasions and never had a problem with it. I am sure when the nitro methanol explodes in the engine while running is more stress then the piston lock will put on it most times.

The hex head on the back only grips clockwise so removing the flywheel nut on the front (counter-clockwise) will not work as it turns in the same direction as the back.

Tightening wouldn't help either as the hexhead on the back will slip when turning clockwise in the front...

I think your idea is ideal only for external OWB..

I used big, Jaw type pliers to hold the flywheel, and then a deep 10 mm socket. worked great, thanks

If it's press fit, you're gonna have to heat it.
