I'm making plans for making a new ramp for my savage and would like to get some advice from some you guys. I'm looking to get rather big air (20-25ft) and was wondering what size ramp would be perfect for this. I would also like to be able to do backflips off of it so it'll be a curved ramp right? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have built two ramps so far. They are very simple because I am only 12 and are straight, not curved.

I have a small one, which I designed to get to know how to jump. It is made of white pine wood I had lying around, and took about 1 hour to build. It is only 30cm high, so I only get 50-65cm of height from it.

The other one is much larger and I can get at least 4m (12 feet) of air from it. It was extremely hard to build (for me) and took amost a week to finish. It is made of 1/16 inch plywood that again I had lying around. It is 75cm tall.

I have unlimited acces to tools to make this i just need rough demensions as to how wide, tall and what the angle of elevation should be to get about 20-25 feet of air.

It really depends on what wood you buy. I just went to the DIY store and picked up some ply board, tough size of 2000X600mm. I just bent it as much as I could against a step and got my dad to messure the distance from the step to the end of the board. I messured the height aswell.

The dimentions of the ramp are now

1.5m accross the bottom.
1m upright
60cm of extra wood alone the bottom to stop it from tipping over.

I just used some batton wood I had left over for the frame. The extra wood on the back gives it stabability when doiung ultra fast jumps, otherwise it tips over. I will try and get some pics when it is light, but its pitch black at the moment.

Also, a good tip is to paint it, to weather proof it. Get some cheap gloss for an undercoat, do 2-3 coats and it will last you years. I leave mine out all year round, as I cant get it through the door! If you want you can paint a design on it, looks good on the videos!

Heres a picture taken off one of my videos. The ramp isn't quite finished yet, I still have the logo to go on. Its really just down to trial and error. The ramp will wear down, so you can modify the design when that happens etc.

The angle the car leaves the ramp at is about 45 degrees. This makes for good backflips.

Its fine as long as you land it right. Start with a small one first to get the hang of air control, otherwise you will have loads of broken parts. It caused my X TVPs to go, Pinion gear stripped, 43 Tooth bevel gear gone, Engine plate boken, Numerous A-Arms broken, Numerous straches everywhere and 1 diff blown. Although most of this was my fault, just dont go straight in with a hude ramp at full throttle.

definately go for a hook ramp. good air and it leaves you in a good position to land the jumps.

I'm interested in some good ideas too.... but for me I have to be able to transport the ramp in the back of my Jeep Cherokee... so I'll be doing some measurements to ensure it fits inside...

I'll also want to build another ramp. The one I have now is kinda small as far as height. It's also hard to hit since it's only 4 inches wider than my sav. How do you curve the wood? Do you just put a lot of pressure on it and bend it?

Put one end against a step/wall. Push on the wood as hard as you can unless you feel it breaking. Messure from the wall to the end of the wood. Then messure up from the floor to the top of the wood. You can the build a basic frame from those messurements.

Make 2 sides of the triangle from those messurements. You then need to put some reinforcments in. After that you just attach the wood to the bottom of the stand, and the top. Then you are done.

Here are two very good ramp plans. I built the 2nd one and it works great. The first one will get you some major air time and a few broken parts if you are not careful. But it is one heck of a ramp. Check them out. You would have to scale them down just a bit to fit it into the back of a cherokee, but it would not be that hard. The 2nd ramp would come close to fitting, it's only 2' tall. But the length and width may need to be adjusted to fit your needs.

They are a bit on the small side... You will have to get some good speed to get a decent jump off those.

Thanx. Can't wait to try it out for the first time! My last ramp was half the size of this one and I was able to do double back flips off it. Mabey now I can try do tripple, and dare I try a quadrouple. Thanx for all your help guys!

Before using it a lot, paint it! Use some gloss, and it will make the surface last longer. Paint the bottom aswell, if you leave it out all day, then the wood will soak up moisure from the ground and rot away. I have to leave mine out 24/7 as I cant get it through the door! Only use the cheapest paint though, the car will wear through it in the end, but at least it wears through the paint not the jump.

I don't have a problem with it getting soaked as I keep it in my garage when I'm done with it. But I probly will still paint it. Scottywilkes, nice pics of your car jumping. I'll try and take some vids when I go out to use mine. I find it's easiest to do a back flip at 3/4 throttle and once it leaves the ramp mash the throttle. But for a double/ tripp, just go WOT until the landing and hope it lands on it's wheels! LOL.

I don't have any pictures of mine.
When mine was complete, I added a hand full of samd to the paint.
This gives it just enough of a non-skid surface to help if you need a slight "correction" in your approach.
Plain wood doesn't seem to have the bite.

Here's my ramp...its made of some old cabinet backboard, some 11/32" plywood on one side, some 5/8" plywood on the other side, a 2x2 1/2 as the lower support, and a 2x4 cut into four strips as the rails going widthwise across the ramp to secure the roadbed on. Without making too many subjective statements, the ramp is at about a 40 degree angle in relavence to a flat and level ground, and I get about 10 feet or more of air on takeoff. The ramp is about twice the width of the Savage, that way even with my poor driving skills, I could hit it the first pass too. My only size restriction was it could not be taller than 17 inches, so it could fit in the back of my Dodge Dakota that has a tonneau cover on it. When I get a different truck, I'll probably buy a cap for it instead of a tonneau cover, that way I can put a larger ramp in the back.
